Danny Poirier, a light keeper, captured a photo of this wolf while working at Cape Scott, just north of Port Hardy. “Part of my adventures of working the lights of the West Coast of British Columbia is the pleasure of embracing the nature that surrounds all of us that live on Vancouver Island,” Poirier says. PORT McNEILL—Having organized the inaugural Victor’s Secret Fashion Show a year ago, Cheryl Verbrugge should have been more comfortable preparing for the second annual event this weekend.
Well, yes and no.“I think it’s easier,”
Verbrugge admitted, then added with a laugh, “But I’m starting to get stressed that I’m not more nervous.”
The format has changed a bit for this year’s show, which kicks off at 7 p.m. Saturday at Port McNeill Community Hall. Instead of a fashion show on a runway, this will be a pageant, complete with judges, evening gowns and
swimsuit and talent “competition”.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and a dance will follow the pageant.
Two things remain the same: all the pageant contestants are men, and each of them will be outfi tted in the wildly decorated foundation garments created for last summer’s Bras for a Cause fundraiser at The Flower Shoppe.
The Victor’s Secret Pageant continues the fundraising, with particular emphasis on helping out North Island cancer victims and their families. Last year’s fashion show raised nearly $6,000, with $2,000 donated to fi ghting breast cancer and the rest remaining in the community, Verbrugge said.
“It wasn’t my idea,” she said of the
Victor’s Secret events, “but I got it going when a friend of mine was dying and was going to Victoria for (cancer) treatments. She said, ‘I just can’t do it anymore; it’s too hard.’ I just wanted to do anything I could to help.”
Verbrugge and her fellow volunteers have clearly hit on a winning formula. Last year’s fashion show sold out the 150 available tickets to the community hall, and this weekend’s pageant sold out last Friday.
“Last year was kind of fl ying by the seat of our pants,” said Verbrugge. “I guess this year will be, too. We’ve got a lot of new guys.”
Last year each model was escorted down the runway by “showgirls” Alyssa
McAstocker and Julie Tait to a bump-and-grind soundtrack. They then strut their stuff in the zany-themed bras as fans — women dominated the crowd — shrieked and tossed tokens to their favourites.
The show wrapped up with all the men dancing to the Macarena in a grand fi nale.
Verbrugge said this week’s pageant, which will feature as many as 34 of the Bras for a Cause entries, will
also feature a fi nale. Though it may need some more work in the fi nal days before the show.
“We had one practice for them, but they were not confi dent,” she said. “So we have a
couple more meetings scheduled, and then they’ll do it again at dress rehearsal.”
Unlike the pageant contestants, Verbrugge believes she is ready to roll out the show with plenty of volunteer support.
Vjecko Zima of Port McNeill strikes a pose during last year’s Victor’s Secret fashion show at the Community Hall in Port McNeill. Organizers return this weekend for a pageant featuring local men wearing bras donated to the Bras for a Cause fund-raiser. Photo by J.R. Rardon

The Comox Valley School District will host the annual Vancouver Island VEX Robotics Tournament again this year.
Thirty-two teams of students, mostly from Grade 8 to 12, will come to the Valley to compete on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Lake Trail Middle School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The community is encouraged to come out and watch the tournament, according to Comox Valley School District career programs co-ordinator Randy Grey, who adds the challenges are exciting to watch and are new each year.
“This year it’s called Sack Attack,” says Grey. “They have to be able to pick up bean bags and launch them really quickly.
“It’s quite a good one to watch.”
Teams form alliances in VEX tournaments, and each alliance receives the same parts to build their robots with so Grey says the competition is really about who can work together to come up with the best design.
G.P. Vanier Secondary School will have four teams attend, while Highland will have two, Mark R. Isfeld will have two, Navigate Powered by NIDES (North Island Distance Education School) will have two and Lake Trail will have one.
Many of the Comox Valley teams went to Vancouver for a season opener tournament earlier in the school year, and the two Isfeld teams made it to the semi-fi nals, and the Highland and Vanier teams played in an alliance and won the consolation fi nal.
Grey notes the
number of teams in the Comox Valley is high compared to the number of secondary schools; he points out Surrey has about 28 high schools but only about four teams total.
Teams will also come from Campbell River, Nanaimo, Mill Bay and the Lower Mainland to compete in the Comox Valley.
Grey says the collaboration with other teams makes the competition similar to real work environments.
“What really becomes evident at these competitions is the collaboration between students that they’re in a competition, they collaborate to make a robot and then they have to implement it and that’s just like out in industry,” says Grey. “That’s the whole philosophy behind robotics is that they’re given a challenge,
they have to solve the challenge and then they go and compete and the winner takes all, and that’s just like in industry so it’s really cool.”
Three of the teams from this tournament will qualify to go to the world championships in California later this year.
“So it’s a big tournament,” he adds. “There’s only three qualifying tournaments in B.C. — this is one of them.”
Grey is looking for community volunteers for the event at Lake Trail. Duties vary and he urges anyone interested to contact him at [email protected].
Meanwhile, Grey notes Lego Robotics — which is designed to excite younger students (mainly Grade 5) about robotics early on in their education — has been slowly growing
in the district thanks to Navigate teacher Stew Savard, who “has
been instrumental in bringing Lego robotics to every elementary
school in the Comox Valley,” according to Grey.

Heart disease is still the #1 killer in North America. Very expensive interventions have not changed this fact over many decades.
It is not a single entity but a complex chronic disease with many diverse causes and diverse outcomes from high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, elevated blood lipids, aneurysms and stroke.
Most heart disease is entirely preventable and what makes it preventable is human behaviour. The following is a list of basic healthy living rituals that makes heart disease preventable:
● no smoking or recreational drugs
● regular exercise● healthy diet● stress reduction/
management● satisfying
employment● unpolluted
air, water and earth (drinking purifi ed water is defi nitely possible here but the other two may not be)
● strong positive connections to family and community
● expression of spirituality
As individuals we can make healthy choices to do the following:
● eat primarily organic whole foods
(whenever possible) that are rich in colour
● Look for opportunities to walk up stairs or to work or to the grocery store rather than ride. Wearing a pedometer to monitor progress may be fulfi lling.
● Prioritize time with family and friends to get real face time. Eat together and turn off the computer, the television and the cell phone!
● Make time for spirituality. Practices such as meditation and yoga fulfi ll the desire for spiritual expression in those who don’t identify with religion.
● Recognize when we have enough material things and turn our attention to activities rather than consumption.
● Monitor risk factors with your health care practitioner to identify areas that require improvement with targeted nutrient therapy.
Identifying Cardiometabolic Risk
Factors
The cholesterol mode of heart disease is outdated. Lipid levels are useful to
know but there are other biomarkers that can be measured to identify cardiometabolic disease which is
related to infl ammation, oxidative stress and autoimmunity. These include the following:
● CRP (hs): elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP)
indicate infl ammation due to infection or tissue injury anywhere in the body. If both the CRP and the Lp-PLA2 levels are high, the risk for a heart attack or stroke increases signifi cantly. Exercise along with many natural nutrients and foods lower CRP.
● Homocysteine: high levels may cause injury to blood vessel walls increasing the risk for heart disease and stroke, osteoporosis and peripheral artery disease. Reducing homocysteine is done with methylating nutrients such as B12, Folate and B6 among others.
● Lp-PLA2: (also known at the PLAC test) high levels of Lp-PLA2, an enzyme produced by a type of white blood cell that causes infl ammation

By Dr. Chakib Hammoud, M.H.,PhD.Long term weight control without controlling blood sugar is destined to fail. This is why we have an epidemicof obesity. How it works: Stops the “roller coaster” of cravings and appetite to eat foods like sugar andstarches that cause high blood glucose levels, which then brings on your pancreas to automatically pumpinsulin into your blood stream. Subsequently the high level of insulin precipitates low levels of bloodglucose and cravings for more sugar and starchy carbohydrates (breads, noodles, crackers, cereals, frenchfries) which you don’t need and therefore it goes into unwanted fat storage and being overweight. Expertsnow recognize these basic facts.#40 Bell Blood Sugar Imbalance helps to stop this vicious cycle andputs you in control. Dr. Hammond says this natural product works 10 times better because it reprograms ourbrain and pancreas to release insulin in a controlled manner. Helpful non-fattening eating suggestions in thebox. Fibers and exercise like walking are beneficial and help after you control the underlying basic blood
sugar imbalance. Working in a health food store I heard people saying how well #40 works. I tried it myself. Finally a productthat controls my blood sugar much better than what anything else we had in the store. Thank you for helping people around the world. IreneM. Urdialez, 43, Brynton Beach, FL My medical indicated pre-diabetic. I took #40. When re-tested readings were fine. This helpedmy metabolism and my weight is down 25 lbs. I am grateful to the health food store people for their advice. Michael O’Brien, 60, Rutherglen,ON I finally found the right approach to lose weight. I tried for 3 years to lose weight. After starting #40 my blood sugar isstable now. I was able to stop overeating and lost my excess weight. Sara John, 40, Kitchener, ON I was struggling for 15 yearswith weight gain in spite of diet and exercise. I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. I will forever be grateful to the store manager thatexplained to me to take #40 and read suggestions to avoid fattening foods. I lost 70 lbs. My fasting blood sugar is now 92. My 2 hour postmeal glucose level is now 92 as well. My new shape raised my self-esteem and gave me immeasurable peace of mind. Karen Maples, 55,Clarksville, TN Diabetic eliminated high blood sugar levels with #40. My readings were 140 to 200 and are now 99 to 122 rangewhere I want it to be. Before I bought about 10 different supplement that were more expensive and didn’t work as well. I also lost someweight. A great improvement in my health and daily living. Roger Light, 57, Fort Lauderdale, FL.
CONTROL WEIGHT= CONTROL BLOOD SUGAR
This is what happened to me personally. After suffering for years I desperately triedeverything, drugs, natural products, physiotherapy, acupuncture, magnets and nothing wasof any real help. Finally I had relief in 2 weeks by taking shark cartilage that wasspecially processed to preserve the natural active ingredients. This is the kindwe are now promoting. I realized then that there are over 50 million men and women thatare battling the same illness and getting treatments that are not working well, otherwise we
would not have this ongoing huge health problem. In the last 10 years we have helped tens of thousandsof men and women to have less pain or no pain at all. This is a by-product of the American food industry. No sharks are caught because of their bones/cartilage. Don’t let activists confuse you. Nick A. Jerch,President We have real EVIDENCE that it works. On our web site you find over 100’s of testimonialswith full names and towns. All 100% true. Skeptics may call them. Here are some examples: Doctorsuggested knee replacement after all his options failed with drugs and cortisone shots in knee andlower back. I recommend Bell Shark Cartilage to those millions suffering needlessly like I did for 40years with arthritis in my knees. It's a shame that I was given drugs and injections all these years when a
natural medicine could have spared me the endless torture day and night. Pat Laughlin, Coldwater, ON My hip is 95% pain free.Pain killing drugs mask and Bell Shark Cartilage heals. Rebecca Hite, Oroville, CAI tried another brand and pain came back.2 weeks on Bell and pain is gone again. Gert Dupuis, Hanmer, ONCancelled knee replacement. I was in pain and limping. Haveno more pain now. Can square dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK.For 32 years I cried barrels of tears. Was in and out of hospitals costing society tens of thousands of dollars. I have taken many thousands of pills that nearly killed me.Finally 3 bottles of Bell Shark Cartilage costing less than $100 stopped a lifetime of suffering without side effects. Eleanor Sauson,Shigawake, QCOthers write: Can walk again for hours…Climb stairs without hanging on to railing…First time in 15 years can sleepat night…Rheumatoid pain in joints down 90%, same for my sister. Bell relays 100% truthful user’s free speech. No needto make claims. No money is paid for it. No questions asked guarantee.

ARTHRITIS Pain free in2 weeks!
By Dr. Chakib Hammoud, M.H.,PhD. The USDA now recommends to eat 50% alkaline food (vegetables, legumes, salads, fruit). Healthprofessionals suggest 80% alkaline food. Unfortunately, North American people eat 90% acidic food (meat, pasta, rice, bread, pastries, sweets, junk food). If you cannot change your diet to USDA’s 50% or closer to80% alkaline food, consider to supplement with a natural health product that helps to increase your pHalkaline level close to a healthy #7. Ask for Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39. It’s inexpensive, hasno side effects and may eliminate the need for anti-acid pills many people take. As a bonus, an alkalinebalanced body prevents many illnesses. See guarantee printed on box. Reflux gave me a sore throatand I could not sing in the church choir anymore. After taking Bell #39 I have no more reflux and rejoice insinging again. Helene Giroux, 65, Quebec, QC Have family history of heartburn. For last 10 yearsI suffered a lot with acid reflux. I told all family members about #39 being all natural, giving quick relief andhaving no side effects. Michael Fasheh, 49, Port Ranch, CA Very happy with acid reflux relief. Last
4 years had increasing reflux despite taking anti-acid products. I am alsotrying to eat more alkaline food. Grzegorz Smirnow, 43, Mt. Prospect, IL #39

PAUL RUDAN/THE MIRRORPerfect hair...always!Kerry Fraser was always known as one of the best referees in the National Hockey League, but he was better known for his immaculate coiffure. Now
retired from reffing the big boys, Fraser was in Campbell River on Monday night to officiate the charity hockey match between the NHL Oldtimers and the
local Law Enforcement club. The undermanned Law Enforcement team weren’t much of a match for the Oldtimers which included Hall of Famers Bryan Trot-

in artery walls, can predict risk of a heart attack or stroke. When both Lp-PLA2 levels and blood pressure are high, stroke risk increases signifi cantly.
Natural nutrients lower Lp-PLA2.
● Small LDL Particles: The size as well as the number of LDL particles is important in determining risk. The small LDL’s can cause
plaque build up and progress much faster as they enter the arterial wall more easily than large LDL particles. Having too many small LDL particles is a powerful risk factor for a heart attack. Certain
nutrients and avoiding wheat according to Dr. Davis, author of “The Wheat Belly” decreases small LDL particles.
● Large HDL particles: It was always understood that if you have a lot of HDL
particles in the blood this was protective against heart disease. But the size also matters and the larger they are the better they can transport cholesterol out of the arteries. Weight loss, exercise and stopping tobacco improve the number of these larger HDL particles.
● Vitamin D (25 OH) or vitamin D blood levels: Studies have linked vitamin D defi ciency to increased risk of metabolic syndrome, Type II diabetes and heart disease.
These advanced forms of blood tests are offered by such labs as Berkeley HeartLab, Cleveland Heart Lab and Boston Heart Labs.
Many people have either elevated LDL cholesterol and or lower levels of HDL cholesterol and they want to avoid the statin drugs due to their side effects and controversy. These tests can help people make choices about their health care and take more aggressive measures to naturally change these biomarkers. In science measurement precedes change.

Helping people make health choices
Remember those schoolyard bullies back in the day who used to tease the kids with braces?
“Brace face!” they’d jeer. “Metal mouth! Tin grin!” Those cruel taunts could be a thing of the past, thanks to one of the nicest innovations in dentistry: Invisalign invisible braces. Invisalign consists of a custom-made series of clear plastic aligners that gradually shift your teeth into place without using metal
brackets or wires. In fact, our patients often tell us that very few of their friends and family ever notice they’re wearing them.
Although the end result may appear the same, there are quite a few advantages to Invisalign over other teeth-straightening options. They can be removed to eat the foods you enjoy, they’re less likely to irritate your
cheeks and gums and you only require a short dental visit every four to six weeks while in treatment.
Because you can remove them to brush and fl oss your teeth, your chances of developing decay or problems with your gums is also
much smaller than with conventional braces. A typical
Invisalign treatment costs around $5,000 and is covered by most dental plans that have orthodontic coverage. To get started, fi rst you’ll need to make an appointment with an Invisalign provider to have an X-ray and assess if your goals can be achieved. Next, impressions and photographs are sent to Invisalign and a computer mock-up of your case and expected results is generated.
You get to review the results of this
during a follow-up consultation; if you like what you see, you’re ready to begin your treatment!
Invisalign works great for simple corrections in your smile or after relapse from previous braces.

The locals have been enjoying fi shing for Winter Springs at the Lighthouse, Willows Point and at the Hump. Fish size has ranged from 10 to 28 pounds. Some anglers are fi shing to deep with no luck. In the past big fi sh have been caught around the herring spawn.
Each week I see a number of new anglers at Discovery Pier. Last year a 28-pound spring was taken in April.
Some local lakes are producing nice catches of trout. Pick a day when the weather is not a factor and lakes where the water is shallow will drop off and try casting a lure from shore if you don’t have a boat. I will fi sh a lake that has fi shing rising and is a short drive north of Campbell River. I fi shed Snakehead Lake with success using choronamid fl ies and had caught and released a number of pan size trout. I am headed to a larger body of water and will try fi shing the same pattern a choronomid.
The Oyster and Salmon River will have the best Steelhead fi shing beginning in a couple of weeks. Anglers using pink worms or egg patterns can trigger a strike. In my estimation the Salmon River has some very fi shable pools and if you can drift through the spots some nice fi sh can be hooked.
I took the pickled oyster taste test last week and was pleasantly surprised how good they were with the mixture of onions. I am headed to a new lake located between Campbell River and Sayward and will have the report next week in the fi shing corner.
