Dear Reader, Welcome to this new issue of Infosylva! ‘Working across Sectors to Halt Deforestation and Increase Forest Area - from Aspiration to Action’ was the title and motto of an international conference organized by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and hosted by FAO at its headquarters in Rome 20-22 February 2018. Gathering experts in forestry and many other sectors from all over the world, the aim of the conference was discussing how best to scale up actions towards achieving and maintaining productive, diverse and healthy forests and halting deforestation by 2020. Participants heard that in order to achieve these goals, strong political will and concerted action across sectors and among stakeholders and institutions at all levels is needed. (In English, Spanish and French; video interviews) Improving the institutional and organizational capacities of farmers’ organizations for the benefit of forest and farm smallholders and their communities is the driving force behind a new partnership agreement between FAO and AgriCord, which is a global alliance of agri-agencies mandated by farmers’ organizations. Reducing rural poverty and improving the livelihoods of small-holders can also be instrumental in combatting climate change. (In English, Spanish and French)

Five countries in Central Asia — Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan — are increasing their capacities for a more sustainable management of forests, thanks to a joint project involving FAO and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). It’s designed to help countries develop the tools that are essential for better monitoring of their resources and, consequently, to set up better forest management projects. (In English) The Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean will take place in Jamaica at the beginning of March. Three central themes are high on the agenda: eliminating hunger and obesity; eliminating rural poverty; fostering more sustainable agriculture, which would also boost resilience to climate change. (In Spanish) Ukraine is facing challenging climate change and forest resilience issues. To better cope with these, expert meetings are being conducted to customize a new approach to climate change in the country’s forest management, and to improve national adaptation and mitigation strategies. (In English) Finally, a photo contest has just been launched, among other planned activities for International Day of Forests (IDF) 2018, to raise awareness about the importance of urban trees and forests in making our urban areas healthier and happier places to live. The winner of the contest will be invited to Rome to present their photo at the FAO Committee on Forestry in July 2018. It’s easy to participate in just one click! "Trabajando en todos los sectores para detener la deforestación y aumentar el área de bosque- de la aspiración a la acción" fue el título y lema de una conferencia internacional organizada por la Asociación de Colaboración en materia de Bosques y que tuvo lugar en la sede de la FAO en Roma del 20 al 22 de febrero de 2018. La conferencia reunió a expertos en silvicultura y en muchos otros sectores de todo el mundo, con el objetivo de debatir sobre la mejor manera de ampliar las acciones para lograr y mantener bosques productivos, diversos y saludables y detener la deforestación para 2020. de las organizaciones de agricultores en beneficio de los pequeños productores agrícolas y forestales y sus comunidades es la fuerza motriz de un nuevo acuerdo de asociación entre la FAO y AgriCord, que es una alianza mundial de agencias de desarrollo establecida por las organizaciones de agricultores. La reducción de la pobreza rural y la mejora de los medios de vida de los pequeños propietarios también pueden ayudar a combatir el cambio climático. collaboration sur les forêts et qui s’est tenue au siège de la FAO à Rome du 20 au 22 février. La conférence a réuni des experts forestiers et d’autres secteurs provenant du monde entier et a eu pour but de discuter de la meilleure façon d'intensifier les actions visant à atteindre et maintenir des forêts productives, diversifiées et saines et d’enrayer la déforestation d'ici 2020. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, une volonté politique forte et une action concertée entre les secteurs et entre les parties prenantes et les institutions à tous les niveaux seront nécessaires. La réduction de la pauvreté rurale et l'amélioration des moyens de vie des petits exploitants peuvent également contribuer à la lutte contre le changement climatique.
