Dear Reader, Welcome to this new issue of Infosylva! For agroecology to be scaled up and contribute more to food security worldwide, the role of family farming needs to remain central. This is the main takeaway message of FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva in his closing remarks to the 2nd International Agroecology Symposium at FAO in Rome. Strengthening the role of agroecology in FAO’s work can only go hand in hand with strengthening the role of small-scale farmers, fishers, pastoralists, women and youth. (In English, Spanish and French) A review of the National Forest Policy is currently being undertaken in Tanzania with FAO’s support. According to FAO Representative in the country, Fred Kafeero, the reviewed policy is meant to reflect both local issues and global ones of development concern. He also noted that forestry is among the key mandates of FAO since it is one of the key areas to address sustainable natural resources management, food security and nutrition, as well as economic development. FAO, in collaboration with the German Government and other institutions, is helping the Government of Sierra Leone to implement the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forestry (VGGT), in order to better secure tenure rights in the country. Protecting every citizen from any kind of discrimination in accessing land and other resources is of paramount importance in Sierra Leone where farmers, most of them women, still often operate in an informal system without any legal ownership of their lands. (In English, Spanish and French) Since 2015 FAO and the Forest and Farm Facility have been supporting cooperatives of cocoa farmers in Bolivia by providing them with technical support and facilitating their access to new markets. Partnership agreements with chocolate distributors in Italy have also contributed to maintaining equitable revenues for cooperative farmers, allowing them to reinvest part of their profits in the so-called Agro-Ecological and Forest Implementations Program (PIAF). (In English and Spanish) And there are still a couple of days left for you to participate in a quick survey, which the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific is conducting until 18 April to seek input from key stakeholders for the compilation of its Third Asia-Pacific Forest Sector Outlook Study (APFSOS III). The study aims to identify and respond to the critical emerging themes/questions/issues that forestry in Asia and the Pacific will have to address before 2030 and in the coming decades. The aim of the group is to promote an informal exchange of information and experiences between those working on forest governance issues in the context of REDD+. Para ampliar el alcance de la agroecología y su mayor contribución a la seguridad alimentaria en todo el mundo, el papel de la agricultura familiar debe seguir siendo central. Este es el mensaje principal del Director General de la FAO, José Graziano da Silva, en su discurso de clausura del II Simposio Internacional de Agroecología celebrado en Roma. El fortalecimiento del papel de la agroecología en la labor de la FAO solo puede ir de la mano del fortalecimiento del papel de los pequeños campesinos, pescadores, pastores, mujeres y jóvenes. (En inglés, español y francés) En Tanzania, se está actualmente llevando a cabo una revisión de la Política Forestal Nacional con el apoyo de la FAO. Según el Representante de la FAO en el país, Fred Kafeero, esta revisión de la política forestal pretende abordar tanto los problemas locales como aquellos mundiales inherentes al desarrollo. También señaló que la silvicultura es uno de los mandatos principales de la FAO, ya que es una de las áreas clave para abordar la gestión sostenible de los recursos naturales, la seguridad alimentaria y la nutrición, así como el desarrollo económico. (En inglés) La FAO, en colaboración con el Gobierno Alemano y otras instituciones, está ayudando al Gobierno de Sierra Leona a aplicar las Directrices voluntarias sobre la gobernanza responsable de la tenencia de la tierra, la pesca y la silvicultura (VGGT) para garantizar mejor los derechos de tenencia en el país. Proteger a cada ciudadano de cualquier tipo de discriminación en el acceso a la tierra y otros recursos es de suma importancia en Sierra Leona, donde los campesinos, en su mayoría mujeres, a menudo operan en un sistema informal sin ningún título legal sobre sus tierras. La FAO, en collaboration avec le Gouvernement allemand et d'autres institutions, aide le Gouvernement de la Sierra Leone à mettre en œuvre les Directives volontaires pour une gouvernance responsable des régimes fonciers applicables aux terres, aux pêches et aux forêts (VGGT), afin de mieux garantir les droits fonciers dans le pays. Protéger chaque citoyen de toute forme de discrimination dans l'accès à la terre et à d'autres ressources est d'une importance primordiale en Sierra Leone, où les agriculteurs, pour la plupart des femmes, souvent exercent leurs activités dans un système informel, sans posséder de titres de propriété sur leurs terres. (En anglais, espagnol et français) Depuis 2015, la FAO et le Mécanisme forêts et paysans soutiennent des coopératives de producteurs de cacao en Bolivie en leur apportant un soutien technique et en facilitant leur accès à de nouveaux marchés. New FAO publications Sustainable management of Miombo woodlands: Food security, nutrition and wood energy The Miombo woodland is a vast African dryland forest ecosystem covering close to 2.7 million km2 across southern Africa (Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe). It is estimated that the woodlands sustain the livelihoods of more than 100 million rural poor and 50 million urban people. The charcoal sector alone employs vast numbers of rural people and offers additional income to many poor rural families. The impact of disasters and crises on agriculture and food security 2017 This second edition of FAO's report on the Impact of Disasters and Crises on Agriculture and Food Security provides the latest data on the impact of disasters and crises on agriculture sectors, combined with sound analysis of remaining gaps and challenges. It is not limited to natural disasters alone, but includes the first-ever analysis of the effect on agriculture of conflict and food chain crises. The 2017 report considers how the entire sector is impacted, not only crops and livestock but also forestry, fisheries and aquaculture. Au fil du temps, diverses formes de foresterie participative ont évolué dans différents pays, mais toutes ont en leur cœur la notion d’un certain niveau de participation des petits exploitants et des groupes communautaires à la planification et à la mise en œuvre de la gestion forestière. Miscellaneous What is the future of forests and forestry in Asia and the Pacific? FAO is launching the Third Asia-Pacific Forest Sector Outlook Study (APFSOS III) - a flagship publication that aims to provide a clear picture of emerging opportunities and challenges for forestry in Asia and the Pacific to 2030, laying out a solid foundation for long-term strategic planning by decision-makers including governments, investors, industries, international organizations, and civil society organizations. Considering the complexity in identifying the pathways of forestry in the coming decades, FAO would like to seek inputs from all the key stakeholders right from the design of the study. The starting point for the

outlook study is to identify the critical emerging themes/questions/issues that forestry will have to address in the coming decades to make it relevant to a changing world. This survey will only take 5-7 minutes of your time (open until 18 April 2018). Your inputs along with those provided by other stakeholders will be collated and analyzed in detail.

----------------------------------- Legal Preparedness for REDD+ The aim of the group is to promote an exchange of experiences between those working on REDD+ and Sustainable Forest Management legal issues and those who would like to learn more about legal reforms in the context of REDD+, taking into consideration the latest developments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The members of the community are those working on REDD+ legal issues and include legal experts, government representatives, decision-makers and representatives from forest dependent and indigenous communities. The initiative for this group came following the 2012 workshop on legal preparedness for REDD+, organized during the Committee on Forestry (COFO) at FAO. There was great interest in continuing the exchange during the workshop and expanding discussions into a larger “community of practice” on REDD+ law. This forum could give you and others the chance to discuss freely the challenges and achievements individuals are facing in legal preparedness as they work towards supporting countries in their REDD+ Readiness efforts. Joining is simple and discussions are carried out in Spanish, French and English via e-mail.

AAD project to support in tackling SLM to combat desertification The Point 04/04/18 The Action Against Desertification (AAD) project is an EU-ACP funded initiative supporting the implementation of the Gambia Green Wall for Sahara and Sahel Initiatives (GGWSSI), with the aim of tackling integrated Sustainable Land Management (SLM) approach in an effort to combat desertification in the provincial Gambian Regions of North Bank, North of Central River and Upper River. The UN agency supports a cooperative in the country that includes 48 members and 1,300 producers, by providing technical support, facilitating access to new markets and brokering agreements with the Bolivian government to protect the interests of small cocoa farmers.
