Dear reader, Welcome to this new edition of Infosylva, which we open by drawing your attention to a newly launched project led by FAO in the Gambella region of Ethiopia. This project aims to support the energy needs of over 200,000 Sudanese refugees, while also helping to relieve host communities of the considerable pressure this major influx of refugees places on local natural resources, especially as camp residents rely entirely on forest trees for their domestic energy needs. (In English) Not only is FAO in a unique position to respond to the crises affecting food production and rural communities, but its capacity to build resilience makes it a game-changer in the protection and restoration of the livelihoods of millions of people and it can help lay the foundation for long-term recovery. (In English, Spanish and French) The first African Drought Conference was held in August in Windhoek, Namibia. The conference focused on drought risk management and resilience building in Africa. A strategic framework for drought risk management was adopted at the meeting as a component of the overall climate change adaptation measures that are intended to boost sustainable

and equitable development in Africa in coming years. (In English, Spanish and French) FAO recently published the training manual Mainstreaming Gender into Forestry Interventions in Asia and the Pacific. The manual aims to create more gender neutrality and equality in the sector, by creating a space for reflection on gender, to move away from stereotyped gender roles. (In English) Ministers and deputy ministers from Central America, along with representatives from African and Asian countries renewed their commitment to the Bonn Challenge at a recent meeting in Panama. Launched in 2011, the Bonn Challenge aims to restore 150 million hectares of degraded lands and forests by 2020. (In Spanish) And you have time until 10 September to complete a five-minute survey that will help the FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) team improve their publications and services. All Respondents to the survey will receive a free copy of the FRA 2015 Synthesis Document (Second Edition) and/or FRA 2015 Infographics. (English) Enjoy your reading, Estimado lector/a, Bienvenidos a esta nueva edición de Infosylva, que abrimos llamando su atención sobre un proyecto lanzado recientemente y dirigido por la FAO en la región de Gambela en Etiopía. Este proyecto tiene como objetivo apoyar las necesidades energéticas de más de 200.000 refugiados sudaneses, ayudando al mismo tiempo a aliviar las comunidades de acogida de la considerable presión de esta gran afluencia de refugiados respecto a los recursos naturales locales. De verdad, los residentes de los campos dependen por completo de árboles forestales para sus necesidades energéticas domésticas. Le manuel vise à promouvoir plus de neutralité et d’égalité entre les sexes dans le secteur, en créant un espace de réflexion sur le genre, pour essayer d’aller au-delà des rôles traditionnels. (En anglais) Lors d'une récente réunion tenue à Panama, des ministres et des sous-ministres des pays d'Amérique centrale, ainsi que des représentants des pays africains et asiatiques ont renouvelé leur engagement envers le Défi de Bonn. FAO and partners support natural resource management through sustainable wood fuel use strategies FAO News Africa 18/08/16 A project that aims to support the energy needs of over 200 000 South Sudanese refugees in four camps and host communities has been launched by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Ethiopia’s Gambella Region. Namibia Conference discusses enhancing resilience to drought in Africa FAO Africa News 18/08/16 A first African Drought Conference was held under the auspices of the African Union in Windhoek, Namibia, this week, as a follow-up to the High-level Meeting on National Drought Policies (HMNDP), organized by FAO, WMO and UNCCD Secretariat, in 2013, in Geneva, Switzerland. It sheds the spotlight on the necessity for Africa to place a “Strategic Framework for Drought Risk Management and Enhancing Resilience in Africa” high on its development agenda. When it comes to its humanitarian work, FAO is in it for the long haul FAO News 19/08/16 FAO plays a unique role in responding to crises affecting food production and rural communities. From day one, we work to protect and restore the livelihoods of affected farmers, fishers, herders and foresters. New FAO publications Mainstreaming Gender into Forestry Interventions in Asia and the Pacific: Training Manual The training manual is composed of 5 learning blocks beginning with an overall introduction to the training by creating an enabling space for personal gender reflection. This is followed by sessions to build a foundation for gender analysis which unpack the concept of gender and gender roles through the Harvard Analytical Framework to facilitate the understanding of practical implications. Payments for forest environmental services in sub-Saharan Africa. A practical guide This publication responds to calls in regional and global forestry forums to strengthen capacity for effectively developing and implementing payment schemes for environmental services in sub-Saharan Africa. The publication focuses on forest-based environmental services, such as carbon sequestration, watershed protection and biodiversity conservation. It comes at a time when forests are at the centre of global responses to the challenge of climate change and when payment schemes for forest environmental services are increasingly seen as a valuable means of generating revenues for local economic development from sustainable forest management. Assessment of International Labour Standards that apply to rural employment. An overview for the work of FAO relating to labour protection in agriculture, forestry and fisheries The study identifies and assesses the international labour standards that apply to rural employment. It analyzes international labour, human rights and other instruments that apply to the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors. It further highlights the challenges of labour protection in these sectors and suggests ways of overcoming such constraints. How Sustainability is Addressed in Official Bioeconomy Strategies at International, National and Regional Levels: An Overview This report provides an overview of about twenty bioeconomy strategies, at international , national and sub-national levels. It analyses how these strategies have addressed sustainability issues. The report also provides a brief discussion on approaches used to develop bioeconomy strategies. Finally, it also discusses the action plans of 10 action plans related to some of these strategies,and some comncluding remarks.

Mongolia 'We have nothing but our reindeer': conservation threatens ruination for Mongolia's Dukha The Guardian 28/08/16 In the Mongolian taiga, or snow forest, a few kilometres from the Russian border, a group of 250 reindeer herders preserve their traditions with care. They dwell, as their ancestors did, in the forest, where they live by hunting, gathering and drinking the milk of their animals. But the creation of a protected area to preserve the wild environment may threaten their survival. Myanmar Illegal logging mars Magwe’s deep forests Myanmar Times 29/08/16 Local organisations that value the environment have lobbied the government to ban logging for more than three years, but have met with little success. Myanmar is the third-worst country in the world for deforestation, according to a 2015 report issued by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, which said that 43 percent of the country was covered in forest, down from 47pc in 2010. United Kingdom Sustainability is seeing the wood for the trees The Scotsman 24/08/16 The forestry sector often uses the term sustainability, but what does it actually mean in a forestry context? This question is particularly important in light of a recent report showing the UK is potentially reducing its area of productive forestry. United Republic of Tanzania Growing trees is lucrative business All Africa 25/08/16 Rural people in Mufindi District are making money by growing trees for sale. Most of such people used to depend on subsistence farming for their livelihoods, but they have now turned to growing trees. United States of America

Earlier snowmelt reduces forests' ability to regulate atmospheric carbon dioxide Phys.org 26/08/16 Earlier annual snowmelt periods may hinder the ability of forests to regulate atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), according to the results of a new study. The findings, published in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union, predict that this shift in snowmelt timing each spring could result in a 45 percent reduction of snowmelt period forest carbon by mid-century.

World Africa Drought Conference to adopt Windhoek Declaration All Africa 18/08/16 Delegates to the first African Drought Conference are expected to adopt the Windhoek Declaration on Drought Resilience in Africa tomorrow. The conference under the theme 'Enhancing Resilience To Drought Events On The African Continent' brought together over 600 local and international delegates for five days; the first gathering to discuss issues of drought on the African continent.
