Dear Reader, Welcome to this new issue of Infosylva. We open this issue with news from Fiji, where the Ministry for Forestry, through the FAO-led Forest and Protected Area Management project (FPAM), is developing a new training programme for biodiversity conservation and the management of protected areas. The programme aims to provide additional knowledge and skills to people already working in forest protection, to improve environmental management in the Pacific Islands. (In English) In collaboration with the FAO-EU FLEGT Programme and the ONG Tropenbos, Ghana is implementing the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA), in the framework of the overall project to support legality in the production and supply chain of timber feeding into the EU designated “Strengthening Regulatory Mechanisms on Overland Timber Trade for Enhanced Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT)”. (In English) On the sidelines of the APEC Food Security Week, held in Can Tho, Viet Nam at the end of August, the Assistant Director General and FAO Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific assured the Government of Viet Nam that the FAO will continue to support the country carry out its

development programme. The programme includes action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and forest loss and degradation as well as integrating nutrition and food security strategies for children and vulnerable groups. (In English and Spanish) Forest biomass and its increasing importance in the framework of renewable energies was high on the agenda at the “First national days for wood energy and woodfuel” event in Sáenz Peña, Argentina. FAO was among the partner organizations of the event, along with national and local institutions of Argentina. The meeting aimed to bring together local professionals from the Chaco region to exchange views on the potential of forest biomass, if managed sustainably, as a renewable source of energy. (In Spanish) A transboundary biosphere reserve of 1.6 million hectares between Ecuador and Peru was recognized in August by the UN Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) as the 17th protected biosphere reserve in the World. This common unique ecosystem dubbed ‘Peace Forest’ by the two countries is the first biosphere reserve to be officially recognized by UNESCO in South America. (In Spanish) FAO has recently released its Survey of ‘World Pulp and Paper Capacities’ for 2016-2021, with statistics on pulp and paper capacity and production by country, based on the information and figures submitted to FAO by the countries. (En inglés) Al margen de la Semana de la Seguridad Alimentaria de APEC, celebrada en Can Tho, Viet Nam a finales de agosto, la Subdirectora General y Representante Regional de la FAO para Asia y el Pacífico aseguró al Gobierno de Viet Nam que la FAO seguirá apoyando al país a avanzar su programa de desarrollo. El programa incluye medidas para reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y la pérdida y degradación de los bosques, así como integrar estrategias de nutrición y seguridad alimentaria para niños y grupos vulnerables. (En inglés y español) La biomasa forestal y su creciente importancia en el marco de las energías renovables ocuparon un lugar importante en la agenda de las "Primeras Jornadas Nacionales de Dendroenergía y Dendrocombustibles" en Sáenz Peña, Argentina. La FAO fue una de las organizaciones patrocinadoras del evento, junto con instituciones nacionales y locales de Argentina. La reunión tuvo como objetivo reunir a profesionales locales de la región del Chaco para intercambiar opiniones sobre el potencial de la biomasa forestal como una valida fuente alternativa de energía renovable, si gestionada de manera sostenible. (En español) En agosto, la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO) reconoció una reserva de biosfera transfronteriza de 1,6 millones de hectáreas entre Ecuador y Perú como la 17ª reserva de biosfera protegida del mundo. Este ecosistema único, en común entre los dos países y denominado "Bosques de Paz", es la primera reserva de biosfera a ser oficialmente reconocida por la UNESCO en Suramérica. Le programme comprend des mesures pour réduire les émissions de gaz à effet de serre, la perte des forêts et leur dégradation ainsi que l'intégration de stratégies de nutrition et de sécurité alimentaire pour les enfants et les groupes vulnérables. (En anglais et en espagnol) La biomasse forestière et son importance croissante dans le cadre des énergies renouvelables étaient au premier plan lors des «premières journées nationales pour l'énergie provenant du bois et des combustibles ligneux» qui se sont déroulées à Sáenz Peña, en Argentine. (En espagnol) Une réserve de la biosphère transfrontalière de 1,6 million d'hectares entre l'Equateur et le Pérou a été reconnue en août par l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'éducation, la science et la culture (UNESCO) en tant que 17ème réserve protégée de la biosphère dans le monde. Cet écosystème unique commun, baptisé «Forêts de la paix» par les deux pays, représente la première réserve de la biosphère à être officiellement reconnue par l'UNESCO en Amérique du Sud.

FAO Forestry announcements Biodiversity conservation and protected area management course on offer in Fiji FAO News Asia and the Pacific 17/08/17 The Forest and Protected Area Management project (FPAM) is assisting the Fiji Ministry for Forestry through the Forestry Training Centre (FTC) with the development of a new tailored short term training programme for Biodiversity Conservation and Protected Area Management. FAO takes action to deal with landslides and floods in Freetown FRA Sierra Leone News 25/08/17 The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is helping the Government of Sierra Leone and other humanitarian partners respond to disastrous landslides and floods in Freetown and its environs. FAO will also work to ensure better land use planning and management, as part of its work on the promotion of responsible governance and sustainable management of natural resources.

New FAO publications Pulp and paper capacities: 2016-2021 The 2017 FAO Survey of World Pulp and Paper Capacities presents statistics on pulp and paper capacity and production by country and by grade. The document is based on information submitted by correspondents worldwide, most of them pulp and paper associations or, in their absence, paper companies. The survey presents only the results for countries that submitted answers to the questionnaires and no attempts have been made to estimate figures in the absence of returned information. Miscellaneous The FAO-EU FLEGT Programme launches a new call for concept notes in VPA countries The FAO-EU FLEGT Programme is now accepting concept notes from government institutions, civil society, indigenous and tribal peoples, and private sector organizations in countries engaged in Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPAs) with the European Union. Grants up to USD 110 000 are available through the Programme to support ongoing VPA processes in targeted countries.

Brazilian judge suspends decree to allow mining in Amazon The Washington Post 30/08/17 A Brazilian judge has suspended a presidential decree that stripped protections from a reserve in the Amazon and would have allowed mining. Brazil revises Amazon mining decree after outcry Deutsche Welle 29/08/17 Following a wave of criticism, Brazil's government has issued a new decree on a large nature reserve in the Amazon. The order still strips protections from the area, but says mining won't take place in indigenous areas.

Brazil’s Amazon forest agents fight illegal loggers, fires Hindustan Times 23/08/17 At their best the environmental agents can slow but cannot stop the destruction. The agents raid illegal logging camps, levy large fines that are rarely collected and confiscate chainsaws to temporarily impede the cutting. As soon as agents arrive at camps, the loggers disappear by running into the forest.

Brazil under fire over Amazon forest mining decree
