MOKOPANE - Managing director and debt counselor of Debt-Safe, Hein du Plessis, received well wishes from his wife and employees last week as he prepared to face the 13th Absa Cape Epic bike race that will start on 13 March. Du Plessis will join local and international mountain bikers as they tackle the demanding 652km, eight-day adventure through the Western Cape. The route changes annually, leading aspiring amateur and professional mountain bikers through beautiful scenery and 15 000m of accumulated climbing, over some of the most magnificent mountain passes in SA. The Absa Cape Epic is said to be the most televised mountain bike stage race in the world.

SELEKA – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Lephalale claim that some of its members were assaulted as they were pre-paring for the IEC voter’s registration week-end last week. The party also claims that its posters were deliberately damaged.

“We rented a vehicle to assist in trans-porting campaign posters when a well-known member of the ANC confronted the driver, physically assaulted him and took his vehicle’s keys,” Sello Moselane, an EFF communication official in Seleka, wrote in a statement to the press.

Moselane claims that he was about 800m away from where the incident took

Fighting for votesplace. “I walked in their direction but the man got into his vehicle and drove a short distance away where he assaulted another EFF member, Mapayapaya Griffiths, and tore the posters that he was busy fastening.”

Moselane claims that the man left his vehicle and ran away after he (Moselane) de-fended himself against an assault after trying to intervene. “The suspect and his brother returned about ten minutes later and I decided to leave with the other EFF members to avoid confrontation,” Moselane said.

MOUNTAINVIEW – The Independent Elec-toral Commission (IEC) registration process at The Mountainview voting station outside Mahwelereng was disrupted by community members protesting about the lack of water in the area on Saturday morning. IEC area manager, Lekgoana Makhafola said that, “the IEC have nothing to do with service delivery and such grievances should be ad-dressed to the local municipality.”

This community protest was related to an unrest near the N11 road on Friday morn-ing where community members protested about the lack of a proper water supply. The municipality intervened and demanded that the protesters elect a representative team to resolve the situation.

A meeting was held on Sunday morning at Mountainview traditional house between the community and the municipality. Mogalakwena municipality divisional head of communications, Malesela Selokela, said that the community and the municipality agreed on terms that a contractor will be hired to deliver water in the community.

The IEC cancelled its operations at Moun-

tainview on Sunday, but said it would still give voters an opportunity to register. “We be-lieve that citizens should exercise their right to vote, because if they don’t vote but need government assistance, they’ll retaliate if ser-vices aren’t provided,” added Mr. Makhafola.

The IEC faced decline in voter’s registra-tions statistics compared to last registrations. Local youths weren’t participative in this year's registrations and the IEC believes that the message of registering was not cam-paigned effectively.

They believe that political parties didn’t canvass their message actively. Ezekiel Mojela, ANC ward 31 committee member stated that the issues of corruption, unem-ployment, poor service delivery and poor ad-ministration at local government are factors resulting in poor attendance.

He believes that poor service delivery has a strong connection with corruption, and strategies should be implemented to fight corruption. “Community outrage have negative impact on the municipality’s perfor-mance, protesting against local government will not help much but rather to cast our vote to bring people who are willing to serve our community,” he said.

MARAPONG – Two ANC youth league (ANCYL) members were arrested last Thurs-day for allegedly damaging the attendance list during a meeting.

Betty Kgageng, ANCYL regional treasurer, and Dan Madibana, ANCYL regional secre-tary, were arrested on a charge of malicious damage to property, but were released with a warning to appear in the Lephalale magis-trate court on Friday.

Kgageng and Madibana attended a meeting to nominate ward councilors for Marapong Extension 4 earlier this month. “There were about 120 people in the church hall where the meeting was held and the attendance register was torn while it was cir-culated,” Kgageng explained. She denies any involvement.

She claims that she has received threats from certain ANC leaders asking her to with-draw her application to contesting one of the wards in Marapong for the position of ward councilor in the ANC.

Kgageng was one of the people arrested for the Marapong riots in which 22 Lowveld Bus Service busses and municipal buildings were damaged during September 2015.

Trouble at ANC branch meeting

“The cases against me are [pure fabrication] and motivated by the unscrupulous agendas of some of the current leaders,” she said on Friday.

The case of the damaged attendance reg-ister was postponed until 11 March while the case relating to the Marapong riots in Sep-tember last year was postponed to 5 April.

Betty Kgageng and Dan Madibana denies all accusations leveled against them.

MOKOPANE- 300 matric learners from 11 Mokopane education circuit schools and their principals, teachers and Primary school principals participated in Matric Day 2016 at Mogalakwena Multi Purpose Centre in Mahwelereng.

The schools included Alfred B Makapan High School, Madikwe Secondary School, Ramogadudi Secondary School, Mosadi High School, Mmadikana Secondary School, Ma-panolla Secondary School, Lekwa Secondary School, Mpirwapirwa Secondary School, Tetema Secondary School and Matsibe Sec-ondary School.

The learners were motivated to prepare themselves for another academic year.

Mokopane education circuit manager, Jan Ralekgokgo, and Noko Sekotlong, principal of Ramogabudi Senior Secondary School chaired the Matric Day committee and they indicated thorough expectations and targets to meet this term. Targets included improving 2015’s average rate of 64, 8% to 80-100%, to encourage team work between learners and teachers, to have extra classes in the morning and after school, to have Saturday

Eleven schools celebrate Matric Dayclasses, and to have extra-curricular lessons.

Attendees were inspired by SABC Tho-bela FM Sports presenter Hodi Tsamago, who indicated education as the most power-ful tool to fight poverty and to liberate minds and as a key to a better life.

“I live my life with a quote from John F Kennedy that says, things don't just happen, things are made to happen,” said Tsamago.

Since his appointment in 2014, Ralekgokgo improved the circuit perfor-mance rapidly by placing it on third position on district from ninth (last) position before his arrival in 2014. He signed new strate-gies to uplift circuit’s performance. Strategies include accountability sessions which enable schools to share resources and have weekend class-es, lessons clinics which combine schools to work together on weekends, rotation of edu-cators on weekends classes and vocational lessons that are conducted as winter classes.

Ramogabudi Senior Secondary School obtained 100 % accurate pass rate in 2015. Principal Sekotlong, believes that the school has adopted a correct mindset to maintain its performance from this Matric Day pro-gramme.
