NEI's Fertel: Nuclear is a key part of energy reliability

By Marvin Fertel (NEI) Wednesday, May 7, 2014 Energy reliability and price stability come from having a diverse

energy mix, and nuclear power needs to be a part of that in the

U.S., writes Nuclear Energy Institute President and CEO Marvin

Fertel. Nuclear energy provides clean, round-the-clock power that

can help reliability, he writes. "Particularly during extreme weather,

the availability of electricity to power furnaces and air conditioners can be the difference between life and death for at-risk populations.

Even under normal circumstances, it's imperative for our long-term

energy security and economic health that the nation maintains a

diversified portfolio of energy sources and technologies," Fertel

    writes.

Researchers develop fully green bio-plastic from abundant material By Michael Roppolo (CBS News) Thursday, May 8, 2014 The chitin found in shrimp shells is the basis for a new kind of bio-

plastic that fully degrades when discarded. Researchers at Harvard

University's Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering note

the material is also abundant. "[I]n the last twelve months [the

many creatures that produce the substance] have produced the same amount of chitin than all the plastic we have produced since

    2009," said researcher Javier Fernandez.
