APReThe rapidly disappearing year almost leaves us breathless and I’m hearing this from a lot of people. It has to be more than the usual excuse of getting older as the young are beginning to become aware of it. In the Year of Grace pausing often to name our blessings is a good tactic for slowing down time. As we name our blessing we might also reflect on the great gift of Vatican II and the many influences it has in our lives today.

With the short term and the looming reporting and exam period I again encourage all parents and carers to be familiar with the topics and timelines in your son/daughter’s Religious Education work. Year 8s, 9s and 10s are working on a scripture unit. Year 8s are learning about the structure of the Bible, how to use it and focusing on scripture interpretation, metaphor and symbol. There will be an exam in class time in Week 5.

Year 9s have an emphasis on i n t e r p r e t a t i o n and are using CS Lewis’s story, the lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe looking at biblical

The results from the ICAS have been published and we would like to congratulate the students. Please see pages 6 and 7.

International Competitors and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) are independent skills based assessments.

Our Year 8 students completed the English and Science papers, Year 9 and 10 Accelerated Maths classes completed the Maths papers and Year 10 (30 students) completed the Science assessment. The Year 9 and 10 competing classes sat for the “Compete” skills papers.

Congratulations to those students who received High Distinctions (1% of participants in the State), Distinction (10% of participants) and Credit (25% of participants).

parallels in the story and characters and will write an essay under exam conditions. Year 10s are examining scripture applications in our contemporary world and will produce some very creative results in their own children’s book of one of the parables. Mr Chris Larkin and five Year 10 students travelled to Assisi College on last Wednesday to participate in an Eco Justice Day with students from Franciscan schools from all parts of the Archdiocese.

This activity is related to Franciscan spirituality and our duty of stewardship of the earth. The students spent half of the day rehabilitating a creek bank, clearing weeds and planting species appropriate to that area. They enjoyed making lots of new friends and especially connecting with other young people who, to their great surprise, were sporting the same school crest as our own. We look forward to joining them again in 2013 to further our relationship and our Social Justice actions.

During October we will be fundraising for Catholic Mission. More about this coming up. And news about Francine, the young African woman who has been at Families Back on Track……she gave birth to two healthy boys just as we finished the term. She is now in Brisbane living with the African community there. Our Campus Minister, Kaylene Langford, will be leaving shortly to take up another position in Brisbane.

Kaylene will be missed by everyone as she has been such an integral member of our community for the past four years.

Currently on display at the the Gold Coast City Art Gallery is the student art show Energies which is a collection of the best year twelve work from the Gold Coast this year. Congratulations to Bridie O’Toole, Nina Caughey, Emma Kelly, Katherine Mason, Jasmine Arapovic and Aubree Smith who are representing Marymount College in the exhibition. There is a fantastic range of high quality work on display and I encourage all art students (and parents of art students) to call in to the gallery and view the work.

One of the benefits of our new Art facility is the opportunity for students to explore photography. The Year 11 Creative Art students recently completed a photography unit with some wonderful results. Currently our Year 10s are beginning a new photographic unit. The addition of the full Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop on our student laptops has further enhanced their ability to explore this medium.

The Library continues to be a popular haunt for many students before school and during breaks. Does your child come here? We are open from 8am – 3.30pm each day, and only closed on Thursday lunchtimes. Good for finishing off those assignments, printing, researching or reading a novel. Library staff are always available. For those who need some extra advice or help with homework, staff are available at Homework Club, run by Learning Support, every Thursday after school until 4.30pm

As Term 4 gets into gear and the end of the year approaches more quickly than we expect, I’d like to remind all students that whatever book they had out before the holidays is now at least a fortnight overdue. Please parents, ask your child to check their bags and bedrooms for any school library books and return them promptly. Overdue notices are announced in the daily notices and sent via email to the students’ school

email accounts, before being followed up by letters home and a bill added to your school account.

CLARk keATING CUPThis week there will be plenty of lively discussion in the Carroll household after Matt Carroll’s Open Boys AFL team lost to St Michael’s, which is coached by his wife Nina Carroll (and former AP Mick Laidler). It has been a rocky start to our Clark Keating Cup campaign after Marymount finished runner up last year.

Despite a score of 3.3 (21) to 9.10 (64), there was plenty to cheer about. For many of the Marymount boys this was their first taste of AFL. The first quarter against the breeze set the tone for the game. Marymount showed purpose and no fear in their contest for the ball. Early injury to Mitch Bury (ankle) and losing our sports captains at half time caused a big reshuffle for the second half. A “Best on Ground” performance by James Stagg in the ruck meant that we remained a threat right to the finish. The margin would have been greater if not for the work of Nathan Cook at full back well supported by Keo Harris, Scott Casselle and Ainsley Bailey. Rick “Fridge” Turner was destructive wherever he played. With limited

attacking opportunities, goal sneak, Darcy Gunning managed 2 majors with Max Reddy providing plenty of run on the wing.

What was most pleasing was that all the boys relished the chance to be part of the team. Just as well because we started with 8 on the bench but finished with only

one, such was the intensity of the game. It is great to see those more familiar with the game trying to lead their teammates with

A F L N e w Srespect to positioning on the field. With several weeks since their last game of footy (of any code), the boys found it difficult to run out the game.

Well done to Dylan Durie, who umpired the match. He maintained good control considering both teams had players unfamiliar with the rules. Our team will be better for this hit out. They are all a bit more familiar with the rules and the ball. Get a footy and have a kick at lunchtime! We are already looking forward to our next game. Stay tuned!

Last week we were delighted to host guest speaker, Dr Jeff Kemp, as he presented “Be a Parent Not a Pal” parenting session. Jeff is known to many in the community for his work with at-risk youth. Jeff shared many of the anecdotes from his book including identifying what your parent wish is for your teenager. He also stressed the importance of the 60 second rule (to calm down and give you time to respond to a challenging situation.) Jeff talked about the importance of identifying your parenting style and to be aware of not being too punitive as a “Boot Camp Commander” or too smothering as a “Rescue Helicopter Pilot” but rather finding a balance between guiding and disciplining your teen as more of a personal life coach. Jeff shared many of his humorous stories both from his personal experience of raising teenagers and his work as an educator across the Brisbane archdiocese.

If you missed the session, many of his tips are found in his book “Be a Parent Not a Pal” which is available on the website www.

from the Counsellors...parentingytodaysteenager.com.au or at the college library.

The Marymount College counsellors (Angela, Heather, Jess) are always available to talk with parents as well about specific issues arising. Please contact 5586 1000 to make an appointment.

OTHeR News:

The Counselling team is welcoming Vivienne Batt for the term as she commences a practicum in counselling toward her Masters in Counselling. Viv will be at the college mostly on Fridays and will assist with referrals. Viv is an experienced teacher and we are delighted to have her as part of our team.
