STEWARDSHIP

UPDATE STAFF

Because of a variety of sacramental celebrations and graduations, some of you might have missed the following article, which appeared in the May 19th Sunday bulletin.

Could You Help Me, Please? Over the past six months, a number of parishioners have received either a text or an email from me asking for some iTunes cards which I wanted to give to young patients at Cardinal Glennon Hospital, some gift cards for families in need or a request just to call me. As with all scams, your generous heart strings are being played. For your own protection and peace of mind, I will never ask for any personal or financial support for any project via an email or a text. Any request you receive via email or text that is supposedly from me — no matter how charming, convincing or sincere it may be — is to be treated as a hoax and deleted. The only way I will communicate electronically with the parish is through Flock Note, the parish email software; but the communication will be informational and not a request for assistance. Fr. Chuck Barthel

Since this is my last Update article, I’d like to share some thoughts I’ve felt strongly about, from the author Mathew Kelly. This is based on the book he wrote about “The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity,” Just the title alone peaked my interest. What about Christianity?? Well, the biggest lie is that we, as frail, weak, difficult humans can be “holy” even though some, like myself, think how can I be holy like the saints or many famous “holy” folks in history. I always seem to offend someone! Well, here is the good news and not so difficult to do. Mr. Kelly suggests that we can do/have “holy moments.” Those moments can be as simple as opening the door for someone, picking up groceries for our neighbor, taking an invalid/someone who cannot drive to church, even cleaning my bathroom/or someone else’s (which I hate to do) because it is healthy/hygienic for the family. So many little things can make for a better, thoughtful life, not only for yourself, but for others. So, don’t despair; we do many of these little moments daily, and they do add up making us better people. God bless you as you do your “holy moments” and in doing so think of the dear Lord’s love for you.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR

GRADUATES!

This month’s spotlight is on a special group of people that has stepped up to fill a gap in our Parish Music Ministry. It was several months in the making; but we now have Musicians who have answered the call to provide a contemporary style of music for our weekend liturgies. For several months now they have been presenting their musical offerings at the 11:00 Mass once a month. We are very grateful for this group of Musicians that has given of their time and talent to enhance and enliven our parish liturgies. Look on page 2 to see who this group of musicians is.

and Drummer/Percussionist: Chris Berra. We are grateful to this group of fine gentlemen that has

DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Ed Lewandowski 894-1373 [email protected] I have been blessed to spend the last 2 years taking notes for

our amazing Parish Council; but my time has come to an end. Please welcome Sandy Hoffmann as our new Parish Council Secretary! She, along with the other new Council members will be welcomed at the 9 AM Mass on June 9th. The next Parish Council meeting is June 27th at 7 PM. All are welcome to attend!

The minutes from all Parish Council meetings are published on the Mary Mother website at www.marymother.org. As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

We celebrate and honor our youth who received the Sacrament of Confirmation administered by Bishop Mark Rivituso! Elsie Rene Biggs, Madison Clare Briscoe, Daniel Patrick Butler, Maura Teresa Clancy, Zachary Andrew Dolter, Cooper Blaise Foster, Anthony Leo Gandolfo, Nicholas Ignatius George, Caiden Sebastian Harris, Trenton John Ladd, Teresa Marie Laramie, Natalie Marie McKean, Hannah Teresa Nguyen, Brianna Kateri Pinson, Jessica Rose Pinson, William Sebastian Raftery, Michael Anthony Ruggeri SIGN UP NOW for Vacation Bible School here at Mary Mother: JULY 15-19, 2019 (ages 3 through Grade 5 inclusive), 9am to Noon Monday through Friday. Register on line at www.marymother.org or get a form in the vestibule and join us for “ROAR: Life is Wild, God is Good!” Deadline: July 1. 2019 - 2020 PSR Registration: Households of children who participated in PSR this past year, please watch your email for notice of registration meeting dates to be announced. New parishioners or first-time registrants, we look forward to welcoming you and your child (ren); call Ed at (314) 894-1373 ext. 218 or leave a message and a good time to return your call.

On behalf of the Health Ministry Commission, Thank you to AMY KELEMEN for serving as Chairperson for the past 2 years. We are so grateful that Amy will stay on as secre-tary. We welcome our new chairperson, MARYANN SCHULTE, with open arms. And new members are always welcome! This seems a good time to address the healthy aspects of “getting involved.” For most people and in most cases, being in a group that has a good purpose is mentally, emotionally and spiritually healthy. It is natural to lean toward groups where we feel we can use our strengths and avoid those we know little about, feel less confident in “trying out.” We are called to community and…who knows, that just might mean “trying something new.” In this, we can grow! It’s summer; great things await you! “And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Fa-ther through him.” Colossians 3:17

Summer will soon be here. Several Major Projects for Mary Mother of the Church will be directed to our aging facility. Exterior - Canopies have been installed over the vestibule entry doors to reduce the effects of the sun bleaching and swelling the doors. The wood fence that was damaged due to high winds will be replaced with a sight proof chain-link fence. The parking lot damaged areas will be patched, cracks caulked and lots sealed. In a few years the parking lots will require resurfacing. Tentatively scheduled last year for the fall of 2020, the repairs should allow the resurfacing to be postponed until 2021 or 2022. When required, it will be a major cost. Tuck pointing and sheet metal repairs will be complete on the north side of the facility. Interior - Cooling unit for the kitchen refrigerator has been replaced. Parish communications will be improved with a new telephone system, PSR intercom intruder alarm, and access control for the church.

This is my Last Update article as the Chairman of the Christian Service Commission. The Bridge Bread sale will be held on June 1st and 2nd for this month.

Room at the Inn will have their next weekend on the third Friday, July 19th. Congratulations to Ed Olander for his grant of $700 from the Walmart Foundation for the 3 Sandwich Shoppes. The Christian Service Commission invites you to The Legend Singers Choral Ensemble on Sunday, June 2, from 6:00—7:15 P.M. This will be held at 808 N. Mason Road in Creve Coeur. Admission is free; there will be a reception following the celebration. A memorial tribute to Helen Sloan was recently celebrated. Helen was dedicated to MCU’s Break the Pipeline Campaign and to the Juvenile Justice Task Force. She trav-eled to Jefferson City many times to meet with and work with lobbyists and legislators. She worked in groups in the Missouri Coalition to Raise the age from 17 to 18 to be tried as an adult. The legislation was passed in 2018. She was still active with the Juvenile Justice Task Force until her illness which led to her passing on April 15. We Thank You, Helen, for all your caring support. Jammin’ for Justice on June 20 will be held at The Ready Room, 4195 Manchester in the Grove.

Prayer will Light up Your Life.

YOU are important in

GOD’S PLAN.

Hey, Saints of Mary Mother (as our former Pastor , Fr .

T. was fond of saying): here’s just a reminder that back in

March of 2018, Pope Francis decreed that the Monday

after Pentecost would be the Memorial of the Blessed

Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. So, as we did last

year, we will once again be celebrating this day as our

Parish Feast Day with the following activities on

Monday, June 10:

8:30 AM Mass in church followed by a reception

in the Rectory;

7:00 PM Evening Prayer in church followed by a

reception in the Parish Hall. Once again, a few words from Pope Francis about the

feast: “The joyous veneration given to the Mother of God

by the contemporary Church, in light of reflection on the

mystery of Christ and on his nature, cannot ignore the

figure of a woman, the Virgin Mary, who is both the

Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church.” The

Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the

Church, should be inscr ibed in the Roman Calendar on

the Monday after Pentecost and be now celebrated every

year.” Let’s gather and celebrate!

My Parish Council term as Liturgy Chairperson is ending; but I will remain as part of our hard-working team as Eucharistic Minister chair. Thank you to my great team for their love of meaningful liturgies and to Fr. Chuck and Ken for their knowledge of liturgy and their gentle guidance. Thank You to our wonderful Ministers of Music and our great Choirs. Special Thanks to those of you who chaired one of the Liturgical Seasons, and thanks to your teams. What spiritual seasons they were! We hope you will have the opportunity to meet and work with our new Chairperson, Carol Mason. Carol is relatively new to our parish. She will be a great chairperson. Welcome, Carol! We pray that our Liturgies have inspired you to answer the call to become more active in our parish. Please consider becoming a Hospitality Minister, an Adult Server, or part of a Liturgy Planning Team. Perhaps your children would like to become a Server or join the Children’s Choir. Remember me for that old saying, “What’s missing from our LITRGIES?” It’s “U.” Please join us in making more great LITURGIES.

The “Entertainment Committee” hosted the 8th grade Confirmation luncheon on Good Friday, April 19th after their Passion “Mime” practice. This committee also hosted 100 parishioners at our 2nd “Annual” Reception following the Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 20th. Thank you to the volunteer angels who served to provide a radiant light and bold witness to our community. Thank you for these past two years when I’ve had the honor to serve our Parish Council under the Social Commission. My heart is filled with gratitude for the generosity of faith I’ve witnessed from Mary Mother’s many volunteers! Please join me in welcoming your new Social Commission Chair, Becky McDonnell. We met on May 1, to share notes; and I’m delighted you’re going to be in her excellent care.

This month, things seem to be slowing down in the Christian Formation Commission. As I’m sitting here writing, my door leading out to the deck is open. We‘re having one of those rare, beautiful spring days. I’m having the opportunity to live in the moment; and it’s beautiful. For me, it’s easy to see the beauty and greatness of God in nature. As everything comes back to life, I’m reminded of the Resurrection of our Lord, which we just celebrated, and are continuing to celebrate. A wild dove landed in a flower pot on my deck earlier this spring. I kept trying to drive her away, but she kept coming back. Suffice to say, I now have two baby doves, as well as mom and dad, who have kept the babies warm and well fed. Just like the birds, God never gives up on us. When we receive Him, a beautiful gift is deposited and hatched in our souls.
