Book Week Author Bio This author demonstrates why we should always follow our dreams! Chris Gurney grew up on a farm in Whananaki, where she was most often found reading to her cats or writing stories for her captive parents. After leaving school she worked as a legal secretary, got married, and had three children and it was her son that encouraged her to send some of her stories away to children’s book publishers.

After many rejections, Scholastic accepted and published her first story “Cindy and the Lost Jandal” for the launch of their ‘Kiwi Corkers’ series. The rest is history and Chris has a number of publications to her name including Hester’s Blister (2010). She is well known for her rhyme, rhythm, and sense of humour, especially when telling traditional tales by drawing on New Zealand themes.

We are looking forward to hearing from Chris during Book Week although should we be worried as she has admitted that she was a ”bit naughty” at school!!??

For more about Chris Gurney please visit: http://www.bookcouncil.org.nz/Writers/Profiles/Gurney,%20Chris

Olympian visits Campbells Bay School: We were fortunate to have a visit from Rio Olympian Hamish Carsons on Friday 9 September. Hamish competed in the 1500 metres at the Rio Olympics and has been the NZ champion in the event 5 times. He is also the 9th fastest all-time New Zealander over 1500m and is ranked 41st in the world this year.

Hamish was passing through Auckland on his way back home to Wellington from Rio and was kind enough to come in and present our top three year 6 cross country runners with their medals. He also handed out the year 6 boy and year 6 girl cross country champions for 2016 with their trophies. The bronze medal winners for the girls was Ruby Luxton and for the boys Etienne Calonne. The silver medal winners were Jade Findlay and Jacob Hailes. The gold medals and trophies went to Charlie Twose and Cameron Maunder.

Our cross country winners got to spend a bit of time with Hamish and have a photo opportunity with him. Hamish was wonderful with the kids and he was a lot of fun. There were some really happy, smiling kids!
