Dear Parents/Guardians,

It’s hard to believe we are in the home stretch of this school year! The fourth marking period will

begin at the conclusion of next week, and our students are continuing to work so hard. At home, in

addition to continuing to offer encouragement and praise for the great progress our students are

making, also continue to reinforce the importance of reading. Reading at home is an important way

to boost reading proficiency. It is also a form of relaxation in the evenings after school or before bed-

time for children. Reading with your child forges a special bond too! As you work with your chil-

dren to bolster their love of reading as well as their reading skills, work with them to believe in

themselves too. This translates into all subject areas. Continue to reinforce with our children three

things:

A can-do attitude: Often our perception of whether or not we can do something impacts our

ability to do it. Continue to encourage your children to always believe in themselves.

Positive thinking works: Using words such as “I will do great!” works!

Practice really does make perfect: How do you get better at something? Practice, practice,

practice!

As we work with our children on their academic skills, we work to build their self-esteem too. These

three suggestions above are proven by researchers to help our children succeed and believe in them-

selves.

Es increíble que ya estemos llegando cerca del fin de año escolar. El cuartó periodo escolar del año

comenzara a la conclusión de la siguiente semana y nuestros estudiantes continuaran trabajando

duro. En casa, adicionalmente continúen alentando por todo el progreso que nuestros estudiantes

están haciendo, también continúen reforzando la importancia de la lectura. Lectura en casa es una

manera eficiente de reforzar competencia de la lectura. También es un tipo de relajo para los niños

después de la escuela o antes de ir a dormir. Lectura con sus niños crea un vínculo. Mientras traba-

jan con sus niños para reafirmar su amor por la lectura y sus habilidades, no se olviden de trabajar

con sus niños para crecer su confidencia. Esto se traslada a tres áreas:

Placement Request 2017-2018

As we head towards the end of one school year, we are busy making preparations for the 2017-

2018 school year as well. Each year, parents have the opportunity to give our team input on

their children as it relates to classes for the upcoming year. Parents cannot choose their child’s

teacher, but parents can give valuable information about their child’s learning style, tempera-

ment and other characteristics that might be helpful in placing a child with a teacher.

Grade level teams will discuss specific information about the progress of each student in reading,

math, and other factors such as social skills and work habits as we seek to create a healthy

learning environment for all the children.

If you would like to add pertinent information about your child in this placement process, please

complete the Student Information Sheet below and return it to school no later than Friday, April

28, 2017.

A medida que nos dirigimos hacia el final de un año escolar, estamos también ocupados hacien-

do los preparativos para el año escolar 2017-2018. Cada año, los padres tienen la oportunidad

de dar la opinión a nuestro equipo sobre sus hijos en lo que se refiere a las clases para el próxi-

mo año. Los padres no pueden elegir al maestro de su hijo, pero los padres pueden dar informa-

ción valiosa sobre el estilo de aprendizaje de su hijo, el temperamento y otras características

Personalized Learning

Our teachers are always learning at Sterling Elementary! This past month

they attended classroom demonstrations and professional development to

learn how to better utilize Personalized Learning computer programs. The

programs of focus were Discovery Education and ALEKS. Discovery Ed of-

fers Social Studies and Science content which is highly engaging for our stu-

dents. ALEKS is a math program that uses adaptive programming to con-

stantly adjust to meet each student’s needs. You can learn more about these

programs through the links below. A big kudos to our amazing teachers and

students and all of the growth they have made this year towards making

learning a more personalized experience for all!

¡Nuestros maestros siempre están aprendiendo en la Escuela Primaria Ster-

ling! El mes pasado asistieron a demostraciones de salón de clases y desarro-

llo profesional para aprender a utilizar mejor los programas informáticos de

Aprendizaje Personalizado. Los programas de enfoque fueron Discovery

Education y ALEKS. Discovery Ed ofrece contenido de Ciencias Sociales y

Ciencias que es muy atractivo para nuestros estudiantes. ALEKS es un pro-

grama de matemáticas que utiliza la programación adaptativa para ajustar-
