Dear Parents/Caregivers

Welcome back for Term 3 and a very special welcome to all of our new families. I trust that everyone had a fantastic and well deserved holiday break and the students and staff are looking forward to another busy term. Jennifer Horgan is away on Sabbatical leave for the term, so I will be Acting Principal for the first five weeks and Miss Janine Clague for the last five. We are both really looking forward to the challenges that this new role will bring.

Regards ~ Garth

CONDOLENCES

Our thoughts and condolences are with Karon Read and her family, as her father passed away during the holiday break. Also during this period Karon celebrated the arrival of her baby granddaughter. Karon will be away this week and Carmen Horne will be in Room 9.

CROSS COUNTRY

The T.S.S.A. (Taieri Schools Sports Association) held their cross country on the last Thursday of Term 2. The children from Years 4 to 6 had spent much

of the term training for this event. Unfortunately the cross country was held during the week where many of the children at East Taieri were away due

to illness. So the numbers of children we sent were dramatically reduced. However, we had a number of children who placed, and the

Year 5 and 6 children will attend the Otago Champs later in the term.

Year 4 Girls: Rosie Falcous (1st), Charlotte Va’afusuaga (2nd), Pippa Earl (3rd)

Year 4 Boys: Daniel Joint (3rd)

Year 5 Girls: Mya O’Connor (2nd), Renee Pitchers (4th)

Year 5 Boys: Jackson Smith (1st), Jake Fowler (2nd), Harry Summers (7th)

Year 6 Boys: Oscar Grey (2nd), James Stephen (4th), Blake Scammell (5th), Mitchell Thorn (8th), Heath Knowles (9th)

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND NOTES

At East Taieri we offer a wide range of sporting and physical activities. If your child is unable to participate in an event or on a particular day, they must have a note from home explaining this. Otherwise we will expect the children to participate.

CAR PARK CONCERNS

Last term we were very concerned with the number of parents who were parking their cars in the drop off zone, or over the pedestrian crossing. On one occasion a child was nearly hit as they were trying to move around the cars. Remember that this zone is for pick up or drop off only, and that

if your child is not there ready and waiting, please drive on and return again. We also ask that if parents notice that there are no monitors at the car park drop off zone (after school) or at the crossings across Cemetery Road or Gladstone Road (before or after school) that they come and let the office know immediately.

FOCUS VALUE – FAIR PLAY & SELF CONTROL

DAFFODIL DAY AND SUBWAY LUNCH

In support of Daffodil Day we will be participating in the Subway Lunches fundraiser to be held early in the term. For $7.00 your child will receive a 6 inch sub with a choice of fillings, an M&M biscuit and an apple drink delivered to

school for lunch on Tuesday 18 August. This week your child will bring home a special order form for you to fill out and return to the office with payment by Thursday 30 July. If you do not return your form before this date we will be unable to add any extra orders to this fundraising event.

HEALTH & PE AND SCIENCE SURVEYS

This term we are conducting two surveys with our school community. The first is for Health and PE and the second is for Science. We ask that you read through these surveys, fill them out and then either return to your child’s teacher, or to the office. The surveys help us with curriculum design and ensuring that we are meeting the needs of our community.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS & 3-WAY CONFERENCES

We were very happy with the positive comments and feedback from parents and teachers about the parent interviews at the end of last term. It was an excellent opportunity for parents to find out how well their children are achieving at school, their next steps and areas to work on at home. The children who attended the 3-way conferences should feel very proud of being able to talk to their parents about their learning.

BOOK FAIR AND LIBRARY RAFFLE

We would like to thank everyone who visited the book fair last term and purchased books. It was a great success. We receive a portion of the profits from the sale of items which we can use to purchase books for the library. This year we earned $800 which will will mean lots of new books for the children. A reminder that this week we are running a library raffle with lots of amazing prizes. The money raised from this will be used to purchase more books for the library. You can buy a ticket in the office before the end of the week.

MARRZIPAN DRAMA

At the end of last term the school were treated to the end of term performance by the Marrzipan Drama group. The children had worked very hard during the term, and

everyone enjoyed their performance. The Marrzipan Drama group are returning again for this term. They meet on Tuesday’s in the Hub from 3pm until 4pm. Below is some more information about Marrzipan Drama. Is your child shy? Do they feel intimidated by the idea of public speaking and performance? Do they sometimes find it difficult to make eye contact? Do they just need an hour a week to take part in organised craziness?! Come and join Marrzipan! We run awesome drama classes which focus on key life skills after school in the Hub on Tuesdays! We play fun engaging games and perform at the end of term once to parents and once to the school. All scripts are original, engaging, educational and HILARIOUS. All children receive an end of term progress report too, along with a certificate to remind them they are awesome! Give me a call to come along for a free trial, or just a chat to discuss how our classes can benefit your child's development. Contact Sophie on 02108395692 or email:
