Bengal starts acting workshops for sex workers KOLKATA, February 19 (IANS): The West Bengal government is conducting acting workshops for sex workers to help them get jobs in the entertainment industry, a minister said on Friday. Sixty sex workers and their children were given acting lessons as well as training in jewellery and costume making on Friday under a project called ‘Swabalamban Special’, Sashi Panja, who is minister of state for women development, social welfare and child development, told IANS. “Many of them are attracted to the glamour world and through acting lessons they can work as junior artists in television and movies of the regional film industry,” she said. SE Report GANGTOK, February 19: A daylong workshop on ‘Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana in Sikkim for the Financial Year 2015-16’ was organized by the Food Security & Agricultural Development department in collaboration with ICAR, Indian Institute of Water Management, Bhubaneswar at SAMETI training hall, opposite ICAR, Tadong on Thursday. The technical knowledge for the preparation of District Irrigation Plan, (DIP) and the State Irrigation Plan (SIP), by the officers of Agriculture and Horticulture and allied departments were highlighted in the workshop, informs a press release. Around 80 participants including SAMETI director, officials, engineers, village level workers, field assistants, block technology managers from Agriculture, Horticulture and line departments took part in the workshop. The resource persons were SWC engineering principal scientist R.K. Panda and ICAR-IIWM senior scientist Dr. Ranu Rani Sethi. Panda made his presentation on some of the various important issues of water management like soil erosion and land degradation process, stream bank erosion, contour trenches, stone wall, farm ponds and terracing. Likewise, Dr. Sethi gave presentation on water requirement of important crops, ground water resources, irrigation supply chain, water sources, farm level management and water use efficiency. The participants laid their doubts and queries in the second half of the workshop. The resource persons left no stone unturned to clears all the queries raised by the participants, adds the release. Our Correspondent RANGPO, February 19: The identity of an unknown person (in picture), who was found lying injured near Rangpo along the NH10 under Kalimpong subdivision, has not been ascertained yet. The person brought at Rangpo PHC for medical care by Bengal Police on February 14 is still under sub-conscious stage. The hospital authority and Rangpo police have requested everyone to help in establishing the identity of the injured person. Anyone having information regarding the person is requested to inform Rangpo police. SE Report GANGTOK, February 19: A new-born baby weighing a mere 700 grams has survived against all odds after numerous medical interventions at Neotia Getwel, Siliguri. The journey of the infant from ventilation-CPAP- oxygen-without oxygen lasted for 75 days. In the ultrasonography, it was found that there was no amniotic fluid in the sac. The husband had given his consent for his wife to be saved amongst the two due to neurological condition; however Dr. Khemka proceeded with the medical proceedings and saved both mother and baby. When the child took birth after a gestation period of seven months she did not cry, respiration and heart rate was also very low. The baby after a tough strife for survival in the Intensive Neonatal Care Unit of Neotia has now recovered and has been discharged after 75 days in healthy condition. Ashok Yadav, the father of the baby expressed his thankfulness to the entire team of paediatrics and neonatology of Neotia Getwel for their integrated approach in helping them in having their child alive. Our Correspondent MANGAN, February 19: Patuk Singbel GPU, East Sikkim held its gram sabha under the chairmanship of panchayat president K.B. Chettri at Makha today. Tintek BDO Bikram Rai, zilla member Hemraj Adhikari, line department and police officials and general public attended the meeting. Addressing the sabha, the panchayat president highlighted about the schemes under five year plan like construction of toilet in different schools of the GPU, construction of garbage collection bins, drinking water supply to schools, construction of cow shed, poultry, piggery and fisheries farming, construction of new road and footpath and up gradation of Kokaley primary school among others. Panchayat secretary R.P. Regmi presented the account details of the GPU for the year 2014-15. The gram sabha also passed the beneficiaries list of widow pension and grant for differently abled persons. The Tintek BDO mentioned that the gram sabha is a decentralisation of power and said that people should be aware of the activities of the gram panchayat and the government. Youth attacked with axe at Jorethang Staff Reporter GANGTOK, February 19: A 25-year-old youth from Daragaon, Jorethang was attacked with an axe by two assailants after a scuffle escalated on February 18. The incident took place near Jorethang senior secondary school. The victim was taken to Jorethang PHC where the medical authorities deemed the injury as not fatal. The assailants are still at large and Jorethang police is investigating the matter.
