President and Conference Chair Message

This year our conference chair

is our President! so we have com-

bined the President and Conference

Chair's Message into one item. Ed. More snow days anyone? Other than the storms, I

hope your semester is off to a good start. It was awesome

to see so many NEMATYC colleagues at AMATYC in

November. We wrapped up the Local Host Committee

responsibilities with a dinner at

Paparazzi at the end of

December. I want to thank Jack

Keating, the AMATYC

Local Host Committee, and

all of you who helped to make Boston

AMATYC 2010 a success. The Hospitality Suite and In-

ternet Café provided a home away from home at the con-

ference. Thank you again for all the time and energy that

went into making those rooms run smoothly and also to

all who helped “stuff” bags.

The Executive Committee is now hard at work on the

Spring Conference. Look for more details and registra-

tion information in this newsletter. We’re thrilled to be

hosting the conference on Cape Cod and I hope that many

of you are planning to attend. Our conference is a few

weeks later than usual (April 29 and 30) so think positive

thoughts about some nice spring weather. Our lodging is

in a classic Cape Cod hotel with sand between your toes

as you walk out the door. Our host, Mark Downey, has

offered the conference rate for any extra days, so maybe

you’ll be able to sneak in a “Spring Break” on Old Cape

Cod. The theme of the conference is Relax, Refresh, and

Renew. In keeping with this theme, our laid back Friday

night activity will be a short talk about Cape Cod accom-

panied by pizza and beer/wine with some tantalizing ap-

petizers and sumptuous desserts. If you check out the pic-

ture of our resort, there’s a small house in between the

two larger properties (the Corsairs and the Cross Rip).

That’s where we’ll have our Friday night Pizza Party.

Then cross the lawn to your lodging. We used this lodg-

ing for both the 2007 AMATYC Summer Statistics Insti-

tute and the 2008 AMATYC BC Workshop and thor-

oughly enjoyed our time there.

Normally we have the program finalized for this

newsletter. However, the conference is three weeks later

than last year, so our deadline for papers is later than be-

fore – March 4, 2011. We had the early decision deadline

of January 13, 2011, but there’s still time to put in a pro-

posal if you’re considering a presentation.

As you think about attending the conference, please

consider Carol Henry’s request for nominations for the

position of Member-at-Large on the Executive Board. It’s

a great way to get involved with NEMATYC.

With Thanks! NEMATYC 2010 Conference Chair Me-

ridith Watts and Friday evening speaker, Matthew

Haas, Corning Community College. Matthew is Merid-

ith's brother. We really enjoyed her conference and his

talk on "The Re-Funification of Math".

With Thanks! Jack Keating, AMATYC Boston 2010, Local Coordi-

nator, addresses the 1,000+ attendees. Former NEMATYC President,

past AMATYC Northeast Vice President, and past AMATYC Boston

Conference Co-chair, 1993, Jack stepped up to the plate to guide us in

making AMATYC 2010 a resounding success.

JANE TANNER

AMATYC

NORTHEAST REGION

VICE PRESIDENT

Wow! For once I

am speechless and words can’t express the

gratitude that I have for

Jack Keating, the local events committee, and

every NEMATYC member that helped make the

AMATYC conference in Boston such a huge suc-cess! Many attendees sought me out to say what a

great time they had, the hotel was perfect, the choco-

late was yummy, and is Jack

going to do this again in 2027? Have you ever looked at

AMATYC’s newsletter AMATYC

News? The first issue of each year is four-color printed and this

January’s issue has a lot of

summary information about the Boston conference. You can go to http://www.amatyc.org/publications/

AMATYC-News/January2011v26n1.pdf to read a

copy of this online. You will see familiar faces in-

cluding those of Lois and Cliff Martin. It was a joy to see them both in the hospitality room! Many

friends stopped by to wish them well.

If you were unable to attend the conference, the AMATYC website has a lot of the handouts and vid-

eos of the keynote presenters, sessions, the Research

symposium and workshops. There is a lot of useful

information at http://www.amatyc.org/Events/confer-ences/2010Boston/proceedings.html#keynote. I

really would recommend the videos of our breakfast

speaker Lew Lefton whose presentation was entitled “Infinity Bottles of Beer on the Wall”.

At the AMATYC Board meeting, I was appointed

a co-chair of a task force that will be looking at is-sues related to our conferences. If you have any

ideas that will make future conferences more suc-

cessful, please let me know. The task force will be

presenting a report at the 2012 spring board meeting. The next AMATYC conference will be in Austin.

I’ve been to Austin numerous times

and you will find the city to be very charming. After you have put in a

full day of attending sessions, Austin

has a lot of interesting restaurants and is well known as the Live Music

Capital of the World.

The hotel will not be too far away from the LBJ

library which is a must-see if you have the time. Be

sure to save the dates November 10-13, 2011 for the next AMATYC conference, southern style.

The best way to get to know AMATYC is to get more involved in the organization. If history is your

thing, there is an opening for AMATYC historian.

This position becomes extremely important as AMATYC gets closer to celebrating its 40th anniver-

sary. More information about this position is avail-

able in the current issue of AMATYC News and will be posted on www.amatyc.org soon.

Are you into social networking? Would

you believe I “tweeted” for the first time from

the Boston conference? I was able to follow

other AMATYC members through their posts on Facebook and their tweets on Twitter. You

can join AMATYC on Facebook by going to

www.amatyc.org and click on the facebook link or search for a group called AMATYC on Face-

book. On Twitter, you’ll want to follow MathA-

MATYC. I’ve gotten a lot of good ideas by follow-ing some individual members on Facebook.

Your AMATYC board is committed to providing

avenues of professional development for its members

and non-members alike. On March 4th from noon until 1 p.m., AMATYC’s Research in Mathematics

for Two-Year Colleges (RMETYC) Committee will

be hosting a Research Webinar that will concentrate on how to conduct research in your classes. Partici-

pants will be asked to implement a research project,

and report on it during a follow-up webinar on May 6th. There is no cost for the webinar and space is lim-

ited. There will be an email from AMATYC soon

with more details.

Each of AMATYC’s nine committees has re-ceived funding for webinars to be given throughout

2011. As more information becomes available, it

will be posted on AMATYC’s website. If you have ideas for topics, please let me know and I will pass it

along to the appropriate committee.

It has been my pleasure to represent you as the Northeast Vice President. If you have any questions

or concerns, please contact me at [email protected].

I appreciate the support that I have received from

each of you during the past three years. For the sec-ond year in a row, I am not going to be able to attend

NEMATYC’s meeting in April as it is at the same

time as AMATYC’s spring board meeting. But, I certainly hope that I see all my NEMATYC friends

in Austin!

Best wishes for a productive semester!

NEMATYC STUDENT MATH LEAGUE RECOGNITION AWARD PROGRAM

The purpose of the NEMATYC Student Math League Recognition Award Program is to foster extracurricular mathemat-

ics learning opportunities for students through participation in the AMATYC Student Mathematics League (SML). Annually,

the top-placing student in the AMATYC SML Competition in each participating school in NEMATYC’s service area will

receive a $100 Recognition Award. (The service area consists of those New England States that are not represented by their

own AMATYC affiliate.) In order to receive the award, the student must have competed in both Rounds 1 and 2 of the com-

petition.

NEMATYC encourages you to consider joining the AMATYC SML and participating in this NEMATYC program.

Your involvement can be as simple as advertising and conducting a one-hour testing session each semester. It can include

pre-test study sessions, or even a campus mathematics club. It may be noted that AMATYC is a sponsor of Mu Alpha Theta,

a national mathematics honor society primarily for high school students but which supports two-year college chapters as well. Information on both the SML and Mu Alpha Theta is at the AMATYC web site, www.AMATYC.org.

NEMATYC Student Math League Recognition Award Program 2010-2011

By Lois Martin, NEMATYC SML Coordinator

Last year we welcomed two new NEMATYC area teams to our competition, and they both did very well.

Congratulations to NHTI: Concord’s Community College and Greenfield Community College on their very suc-

cessful first year of competition, and welcome back for a second year!

You are encouraged to start a NEMATYC-SML team at your school.

• If you are overwhelmed by the idea, enlist the help of a colleague.

• Co-moderators have worked well at many schools.

• Talk with a moderator from another school about how they got started.

NEWS FROM THE CAMPUSES

Bristol Community College

Dave Henry reports that the college welcomed Everilis Santana aboard in the Fall and Alice Wilson in

January. Everilis received her undergraduate degree from the University of Puerto Rico -- Humacao, then moving to the cooler climate of Ithaca, N.Y., for an M.S. from Cornell. She spent three years at North Hennepin CC in

Brooklyn Park, Minn., before relocating to New England, most recently working at CCRI, UMass Dartmouth and

Northeastern. Alice joins the BCC staff after three and a half years at MassBay CC. She attended SUNY Potsdam

for both her BA and MA degrees. BCC also lost longtime member Cecilia Medeiros, who retired after 31 years of service. Cecilia founded

BCC’s Math Team with Susan Hoy and helped run the 1994 and 2000 NEMATYC conferences held in Fall

River, Mass. She also developed NEMATYC’s first web-site presence for the 2000 conference, which has trans-formed into the current web site. Cecilia’s service to NEMATYC and BCC will be missed.

With Cecilia’s departure, look at the BCC website in the coming weeks for a new opening as the college will

have a full-time opening. News from the Campuses continues on page 7.

NEWS FROM THE CAMPUSES

Middlesex Community College

Joanna Delmonaco reports that the department is using information from presentations at AMATYC’s annual meeting in Las Vegas (2009) to build on an institutional commitment to significantly improve student success in

our developmental mathematics courses.

The new program, called RAMP-up Math, consists of a series of 12 modules, which cover the topics that are currently taught in the three lowest level developmental math courses. This new program is being piloted in

Spring 2011, with 22 sections being offered between two campuses. Students in the program will work on dedi-

cated computers in a dedicated classroom with the help of an instructor and a tutor.

The program is modeled after programs at other institutions, which have shown significant improvement in stu-

dent success at this level. One of the goals of the program, as stressed at the AMATYC Conference, is to allow students to complete their developmental courses in fewer semesters and be eligible for college level math courses

sooner in their college careers.

The implementation team consists of Joanna Delmonaco, Bert Engvall, Carol Hay and Mike Williamson.

Conference Refund Policy: A refund of 100% of your advance registration fees less the dues amount will be given upon receipt of a written request postmarked no later than two weeks prior to the conference. A 50% refund less the dues amount will be given if written request is postmarked within the two weeks prior to the conference. A refund for the Friday night dinner will be given dependent upon restaurant policy. No refunds for non-attendance will be given for requests postmarked after the date of the conference. All requests should be sent to the NEMATYC Conference Chairperson. Refunds will be processed approximately four to six weeks after the conference.
