ProfessorGeorgeCobbisProfessorEmeritusofMathematicsandStatisticsatMountHolyokeCollege.Georgehaslongbeenanactive,influentialleaderintheteachingofstatistics.HeisaFellowoftheAmericanStatisticalAssociation(ASA)andarecipientofASA’sFoundersAward.HereceivedtheUSCOTSLifetimeAchievementAwardin2005.TeachingAbstraction-as-ProcessTeachingmathematicsattwo-yearcollegesisrightlyrecognizedfortwoimportantreasons:(1)Two-yearcollegesofferatransitionfromhighschooltofour-yearcollege.(2)Mathematicsisusefultonon-mathematiciansmainlybecauseofitsapplications.Iapplaudbothreasons,butinmytalkIplantoarguefortwomoreambitiousalbeitlessrecognizedreasons.(1)AlthoughTYCsmatterbecausetheyofferatransitiontofour-yearcolleges,theymatterevenmorebecausetheyofferatransitionfromhighschoolclassestolife-longlearning.(2)Althoughmathematicscanbeusefulbecauseofitsapplications,itcanbeevenmoreusefulbecauseitcaninspirestudentstovalueabstraction-as-process.Thesetwoambitiousgoalsarerelated.Applicationsofmathematicsdependonmodels,andasthestatisticianGeorgeBoxwrote,“Allmodelsarewrong;someareuseful.”Findingagoodmodeldependsontheprocessofabstraction:Howdoweputamessyproblemintoourcrucible,boilofftheirrelevantdetail,andrevealthecrystalofpurestructure?Ifweteach

mathematicsastheprocessofabstraction,wecanteachmathematicsaspartoflifelonglearning.InmytalkIwillrelyonanexamplederivedfromthenastiest-everacademicfoodfightoverthemeaningofabigtableof0sand1s.(AlongthewayI'llintroducesomeideasthatunderlietheimportantnewcomputationalmethodknownasMarkovChainMonteCarlo.)Resolvingthefoodfightdependsontheprocessofabstraction.Onceviewedabstractly,theproblemturnsouttohaveasimplestructure.BriefBiographicalHighlightsGeorgeCobbhasspenthisentirelifechanginghismindandlookingforcuspstoperchupon.Hischildhoodambitions,insuccession,weretobeaherpetologist,acenterfortheGreenBayPackers,asurgeon,achemist,and,bytheendofhissenioryearinhighschool,aspiringeverupward,amathematician.Itisnosurprise,therefore,thatwhenhegraduatedfromDartmouthin1968hehadbeenacceptedintograduateprogramsinRussianliterature.LikeMaeWest,hedrifted,eventuallyearningaPhDinstatisticsfromHarvardin1974,buthemaintainshisloveformathematicsandhisconvictionthatPlatowasright:mathematicsistheeasiestsubject,andsoeveryphilosopherkingshoulddevoteadecadetoitsstudybeforepresumingtotacklethehardersubjectsofpoliticsandsociology.CobbspenthisentireteachingcareeratMountHolyokeCollege,from1974untilhisretirementin2007,dedicatedtothisconviction.

Session7 Saturday 9:00am–9:45am Room:North103GlennNewman NewburyCollege Brookline,MATheMasteryModelinTeachingBeginningAlgebra ForthelastfewyearsthemathematicsdepartmentatNewburyCollegehasbeenconcentratingonimprovingMH103-IntergratedAlgebra.PreviouslythedepartmenttaughttraditionalAlgebraIandAlgebraII.Therewasalotofoverlapinthosetwocoursessoitwasdecidedthatonecoursewouldsuffice.Also,studentsretookanyexaminwhichtheyscoredlessthanseventy-fivepercent.Examsweregivenduringalabsection.Atthetimestudentswerenotrequiredtoattendlabexcepttotakeexams.Studentswhodidnotfinishthecoursebutcompletedthreeofthefiveexamswereallowedtofinish(ontheirowntime)duringthefollowingsemester.Wehavesinceadjustedthecourseandthepassingrateshaveincreasedtoroughly80%.
