The creation of desire on the part of the learner to perform an activity to satisfy a need 7. What is motivation? An internal state or condition (sometimes described as a need, desire, or want) that serves to activate behavior and give it direction (Kleingina et. Al, 1981) 8. Motivations importance lies in directing activities toward the achievement of a goal, controlling and directing human behavior, including spiritual and moral values in the minds of the young and giving satisfaction and happiness to the individual 11. Student motivation has to do with students desire to participate in the learning process. It also concerns the reason or goals that underlie their involvement in academic activities 12. Motivational & Emotional Influences on Learning What and how much is learned is influenced by the learners motivation. Effective learning depends on the teachers ability to maintain the interest that brought the students to the classroom. 17. Many factors affect a given students motivation to work and to learn: interest in the subject matter Perception of its usefulness General desire to achieve Self confidence Self esteem 18. Motivational and emotional influences on learning The rich internal world of thoughts, beliefs, goals and expectations for success and failure can enhance or interfere with the learners quality of thinking and information processing. 19. Students beliefs about themselves as learners and the nature of learning have a marked influence on motivation. Motivational and emotional factors also influence both the quality of thinking and information processing as well as an individual's motivational to learn. Motivational and emotional influences on learning 20. Positive emotions, such as curiosity, generally enhance motivation and facilitate learning and performance. Mild anxiety can also enhance learning and performance by focusing the learners attention on a particular task. Motivational and emotional influences on learning 21. If you are in college because thats what your parents want, you may find it difficult to motivate yourself. 24. Sure, its possible to succeed with someone else providing the motivation for you. If you graduate from college, Ill give you a car! If you dont graduate from college, you wont get a car. 25. Motivation that comes from within really makes the difference. 26. Certainly, you need some intelligence, knowledge base, study skills, and time management skills. BUT IF YOU DONT HAVE MOTIVATION, YOU WONT GET FAR! 27.
