What can be expected at the new Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino? Guests can look forward to nothing but rich history, the traces of legendary performers and above all – a place where everyone will be treated like a high roller. “We may not be the newest resort in Las Vegas,” David Siegel said, “but we will be the friendliest.” A Rich History The Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino originally opened as the International Hotel on July 2, 1969 and, at the time, was the largest hotel and casino in the world. It had 1,568 rooms, a 30,000- square-foot casino and 50,000 square feet of meeting space. With 350,000 gallons of water in the pool, the pool was considered the largest body of water in southern Nevada. The hotel was known as the Las Vegas Hilton from March of 1971 through 2012. When Westgate purchased the hotel in 2014, it became, and will remain as, the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. Siegel’s love for Las Vegas and family ties to the city make the purchase of the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino a defining moment in his career. “My father and my mother came to Las Vegas about twice a month for over 50 years,” said Siegel. The hotel will honor Siegel’s father, Sid, by the opening of a new coffee shop: Sid’s Café. His parents were married in the city and were featured in a full page spread in the Las Vegas Sun when they celebrated their 50 th anniversary in Vegas. “Bill Briare, the mayor at the time, gave them the key to the city,” says Siegel about his parents. It’s fitting that the Siegels were given the key to the city, as their son now plans to make his newest hotel the home of entertainment and luxury in Las Vegas. Remembering when Siegel first stayed in the hotel in 1970 with his parents he says, “Ironically, I couldn’t afford it then, but now almost 45 years later I’ve bought the hotel.” History has come full circle. Elvis Presley’s handprint has been forever imprinted on the hotel and the hotel made Elvis synonymous with Las Vegas.
