A strong sense of community pride drove the Millard Business Association to restore

“MILLARD” to the iconic Millard water tower.The first water tower for the Millard commu-

nity bore the message “MILLARD WELCOMES YOU.” Millard’s third and current water tower was put into operation in May 1962 and holds 500,000 gallons.

Omaha annexed Millard in 1971, and MIL-LARD was painted over sometime in the 1980s.

In 2005 MBA members were able to get MIL-LARD repainted on the water tower.

Today, the restored water tower is a source of pride for the MBA and the community as a whole.

MBA OpportunitiesWith more than 450 active MBA

members and more joining every year, there are many networking and educational opportunities throughout the year.

The MBA hosts monthly luncheons with featured speakers. Past speakers have included Sen. Ben Nelson, Rep. Lee Terry, former Mayor Jim Suttle, Sen. Deb Fischer, Mayor Jean Stothert and Tom Osborne, the former Nebraska football coach, athletic director and congressman.

As an organization, it strives to continually improve and connect the business community and members to each other while sharing knowledge and expertise that will benefit the entire community.

Monthly networking events include: Bagels and Business, meeting at a Mil-lard business for coffee and breakfast and networking with other businesses; Network Lunch, meeting at a Millard-area restaurant with other MBA mem-bers over the lunch hour; and Business After Hours, relaxing at the end of the day with other members of the MBA to make new connections before you go home.

As advocates for the Millard business community, the MBA also offers other events and fundraisers throughout the year to help support those who work and live in the Millard community.

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert was a recent featured speaker at an MBA luncheon held at Oak Hills Country Club. The luncheon is just one of many networking opportunities offered throughout the year.

Yes, Millard has had its ups and downs, just like any other com-munity.

A lot of positive things happen in Millard.The community saw tremendous growth when Western Electric

built a plant in Millard in the 1960s. Employment peaked in 1970, with 7,500 employees filling demand for telephone equipment.

After mergers, acquisitions and name changes, the plant even-tually closed in 2011.

The campus has been revitalized. L Street Marketplace — hous-ing both retail space and restaurants — was developed in 2008 on the grounds, with the remaining factory space being repurpposed for other businesses, including Millard Lumber.

Millard is poised for more good things to come.The old Millard Lumber 12-acre site was purchased by Lanoha

Development and is slated for redevelopment. In June 2014, a blighted label for the site was OK’d by the Omaha City Council — the first step in revitalization.

Through tax-increment financing and other financing means, site development will begin in 2015. By the end of the year, Mil-lard should see buildings begin to take shape on the site.

The former Millard Lumber site, above, is slated for redevelopment. Purchased by Lanoha Development, the company envisions a mixed use-neighborhood for the 12-acre site, which will include office, retail and apartment spaces.

L Street Marketplace, which includes retail space and restaurants, was developed in 2008 on the campus of the former Western Electric plant.

President-elect’s Message

GREETINGS!Members of the Millard Business

Association, I am looking forward to serving as your president in 2015. It is a privilege and honor to serve the MBA. I would like to thank all of the many volunteers who have helped our organization. Our organization is strong because of the talent of our members. The membership of the MBA is what makes our orga-nization distinct. That distinction is what founded the Millard Business Association.

I am often asked what makes the MBA different from other orga-nizations. I always brag that we are a member-driven organization. Also, the MBA has a purpose that I refer to as the fourfold mission. The Millard Business Association’s fourfold mission is as follows: 1) promote, preserve and enhance

Millard-area commerce, 2) develop active business-to-business network-ing among members, 3) provide business-specific educational oppor-tunities to members, and 4) provide benevolent community programs. It is my personal mission to ensure we strengthen and grow in these four areas. The fourfold mission of the MBA will serve as the litmus test for all of our initiatives.

We have grown as an organiza-tion because of the entrepreneurial spirit that drives our members. It is my firm belief that we will continue to blaze a trail of success in our community for many years. We have history, talent, passion and initiative as our greatest assets.

I am honored to be chosen as your MBA president-elect for 2015. I am looking forward to a year of growth and excitement as we build the Millard Busi-ness Association and our members’ busi-nesses together. As the president-elect, I am looking forward to the next three years serving on your board, working to grow the MBA and giving our members new ways to build business.

Thank you to all who have used their time and talents to make this organi-zation what it is today. I am always amazed at the dedication of those who are serving on important community projects, serving on committees and putting together the great events we all enjoy.

There is a plethora of ways to net-work, market and serve your commu-

nity through the MBA. The secret to success is networking — being engaged in activities in your community and get-ting to know others, builds a trust that draws people to do business with each other. Trust created by the MBA is just one of the many reasons I am proud to be part of this organization.

I leave you all with a challenge this year…. Challenge yourself to go to new events you have not attended, join a committee, volunteer at an event or one of the community-centric opportunities, or host an event at your business. There are so many ways to become an engaged MBA member.

Together we can build the MBA and the strength of its members.

Millard Business Community FoundationSince its founding in 2003 the Millard Business Association, its members and the community, and its

fundraising arm the — 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation Millard Business Community Foundation — have impacted our Southwest Omaha community in many positive ways:

• Donated $53,000 to graduat-ing seniors from Millard South, North, West and Skutt Catholic High Schools to help with their college education expenses

• Held annual Scholarship Scrambles to fund the scholar-ships; 2014’s golf outing was a record year with 120 golfers taking part

• Project Wee Care, and its predecessor, Project Concern, provided food, toys, clothing and other needs to 3,206 kids

and 826 families during the Christmas holidays through the years

• PWC helped more than 1,000 kids and parents at their 2014 Distribution Day

• PWC supports the Millard Public Schools ELC Summer School Program by providing books, school supplies and needed clothing to low-income students

• PWC’s programs tie into the Millard Public Schools 40 Assets

program by giving opportunities to their students to develop the character traits and skills neces-sary for personal excellence and responsible citizenship by helping families right in our own community

• Partners with the MPS PAYBAC Program in a third of the district’s schools

• Received $11,000 from the MBA’s 2nd Annual Ribstock BBQ Festival for Project Wee Care and the Scholarship Fund

Project Wee Care

Project Wee Care has been providing food, clothing and gifts to families in the Millard area since 2006.

Each year the Millard Business Com-munity Foundation partners with Millard Business Association members, Millard Schools’ staff and students, and area residents to help families who otherwise might not have a happy holiday.

Even churches and other community organizations have been getting involved.

Starting in 2006, the nonprofit project helped 22 families. And last year 210 families — a 30 percent increase over the prior year — benefited from the group’s generosity.

Since 2011, the group has reached out to a specially funded summer school pro-gram in the Millard School District.

“With this program, we know these chil-dren will have lunch, and PWC has helped out by giving each child a gift such as a storybook per week,” said Paula Teetor, Project Wee Care co-chair.

In 2014, the children were also given school supplies for the upcoming school year.

A goal of the group is to encourage children to help kids who are in need by teaching kids a lifelong lesson in giving back to the community.

“Not only does this wonderful organiza-tion provide holiday assistance of gifts

and groceries to our Millard families, they also provide our students, staff and com-munity members the chance to be actively involved in making wishes come true,” said Sarah Weidner of Cody Elementary School.

Another goal of the group is to expand the scale of the program.

“Our goal is to grow Project Wee Care into a year-round program benefiting as many families with children as possible,” Teetor said.

Each year the group has seen an in-crease in need in the Millard community. For example, families need help with utilities or gas for their car to get kids to school.

To illustrate the increased need, Teetor pointed out the increase in Title I schools (schools comprised of a student body where at least 40 percent are from low-income families) in Millard in the last few years.

“When we started Project Wee Care there were three Title I Elementary schools in Millard. Now there are seven,” said Teetor.

Plus, one middle school qualifies as a Title 1 school, and one high school is close to qualifying.

Millard school counselors and MBA members suggest families who are in need of help to the group.

Project Wee Care

The group and local schools also run food drives each year.

The year culminates for the group at the “North Pole.”

The North Pole is where all the magic happens. This year it is located at 13810 S Plaza in Millard Plaza and was donated by the Lund Company.

Santa greets children as they arrive with their families at the North Pole.

They get their picture taken with Santa, and the photos are mailed to the families.

Cash donations to Project Wee Care help purchase perishable items such as fruit, meat and cheese. The group also gives personal care items that can’t be purchased with food stamps.

Children get a ticket to spend in the Project Wee Care “store,” so they can have Christmas gifts to give to their family.

Often when families who have received help from Project Wee Care get back on their feet, they come back to help others. Even so, families have been turned away because of a lack of volunteers.

But once those volunteers get the bug, they keep coming back, said Teetor.

“You can make a difference in some-one’s life,” Teetor said. That feeling is what drives the volunteers who work for the group.

Taste the fun. The third annual Ribstock BBQ

Festival arrives in June.The original event was born of a

thought and a few conversations. After a meeting between Kenny

Engelmeyer and Steve and Jeff Geh-ring, a father-and-son barbecue team, the event took off.

Event organizers plan to continue building on the previous years’ suc-cess.

In its second year, 2014, the festival had more than 3,700 attend. This year, organizers are planning for more than 5,000 attendees.

The KCBS-sanctioned BBQ competition is looking to draw more competitors this year, too, with $10,000 in prize money.

Forty teams took part last year — 30 professional and 10 amateurs.

There is also a People’s Choice, with winners determined by popu-lar vote from public samplings.

With plenty of kid-friendly and fun activities, this really is a community event.

There will be a kid zone, with pony rides and other activities, plus fireworks on Friday night.

Two bands will play at the fes-tival, Eckophonic on Friday night and Lemon Fresh Day on Saturday.

The two-day event is held at the parking lot of Super Saver, one of the biggest sponsors of the festival.

A portion of the proceeds from this year’s festi-val will be donated to the Millard Business Associa-tion, the Millard Business Community Foundation Scholarship Fund and Project Wee Care.

The governor signed a proclamation recogniz-ing the festival.

2014 MBA Annual Gala

The Millard Business Association (MBA), along with the Millard Business Community Foundation (MBCF), work year-round to

promote and preserve the Millard business com-munity and the members of our organization.

The 11th annual Awards Gala was held on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at the Georgetowne Club with a “Diamonds in the Rough” theme.

The event was orchestrated by Lisa Turner, Turner Events and Marketing in conjunction with the MBA Gala committee chaired by Dee Hankins, Millard Plaza Ballroom and several committee members.

More than 200 guests attended, including several dignitaries.

The evening began with a cocktail hour, net-working and silent auction.

After dinner the MBCF presented six Millard-area graduating seniors with $1,000 college scholarships.

Following tradition, Millard Hall of Fame inductees were introduced, the Millard Landmark Award was presented, and several member businesses and businesspersons were honored with prestigious recognition in five distinct categories.

In addition, the MBCF presented CARE Awards to individuals who participated in Project Wee Care and went above and beyond to help families in need in the Millard area.

After celebrating its 11-year anniversary in 2014, the association is looking forward to what lies ahead for Millard.

Following are the 2014 Millard Business Association Annual Gala Award Winners, Landmark Award Recipient, Scholarship Recipients and Hall of Fame inductees.

Citizen of the Year — Justin Lorimer RE/MAX Results Growing up in Millard, children attending Millard

schools, working in Millard and having a wife who teaches in Millard made the Millard Business Asso-ciation the perfect choice for Justin to do networking and charity work. He is a member of the TGIF Refer-ral group, holds a volunteer position on the board, volunteered at the first ever BBQ Festival, golfed in the scholarship scramble and was on the scholarship selection committee. Justin jumped right into Project Wee Care and secured sponsors for 96 children through his church.

He didn’t stop there, he collected items and deliv-

ered them to the distribution center and organized the TGIF Referral Group to volunteer the day before distribution day and even provided lunch to the com-mittee. He personally volunteered on distribution day and attended most meetings leading up to that day.

Justin also volunteers at the HOPE Center, is a Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army and he was part of a team of realtors that was No. 2 for donations to the food pantry in a food drive. He supports youth sports by volunteering at practices and is part of the WatchDOGS program at Reeder Elementary.

Located high on a hill in Millard since 2002, Super Saver serves the community in many ways. A big supporter of Millard Public Schools,

the store holds back-to-school cookouts each summer. The Millard store alone has raised more than $20,000 for MPS.

It supplied Project Wee Care with $10,000 of groceries and sun-dries at cost in addition to racks, carts, freezer space and employee volunteers. The store donates to Relay for Life, food bank drives, City Mission and local churches, and offers a “Round Up Program” for different groups each year. The parking lot is transformed into

Ribstock, and store manager Mike Regester is instrumental to the BBQ Committee.

Super Saver has a scratch bakery, and an in-store smokehouse that has received 55 State Awards. It cuts all of its own meat and still grinds meat three times a day. It is the largest independent grocery store chain in Nebraska, and the employees own more of the grocery store than any other employee-owned grocery store. Super Saver has focused its giving in the following areas: eliminat-ing hunger, educating children and community betterment.

Corpuz Family Dentistry is showing Millard that visiting the dentist can be enjoyable. Patients receive complimentary spa services while their dental work is being done using state-of-the-art technology that makes the experience educational and comfortable. The practice has invested in the community by re-vamping an old building into its beautiful new dental office, which was completed in 2013. The work was done using about 90 percent recycled materials from places such as Habitat for Humanity Restore. An investment in geothermal energy further showcases

the company’s commitment to going green. Not only do Dr. Ralph Copuz and Susan Corpuz volunteer at church, at all four of their children’s schools and in the community, the staff at Corpuz Family Dentistry also embraces the same volunteer spirit and gives of their time and talents. The staff sends out more than 300 cards per year to patients who deserve recogni-tion for personal and business accomplishments. The doctors have received several industry awards, and Corpuz Family Dentistry is a big supporter of MBA and community events.

B2 Interactive co-founders, Brandon Taylor and Bill Hipsher, opened the business in Millard in December 2012 and added two additional staff members Jan. 11, 2013. In the next 14 months, it grew from two employees to 44 employees and expanded its office space.

Plans include acquiring another Nebraska company, expanding 4,000 square feet and adding

approximately 20 more employees. The company is involved with Habitat for Humanity, Humane Society, MBA, Omaha Chamber and the Western Douglas County Chamber of Commerce. It has been awarded Omaha Magazine’s Best of Business award for 2014, and some of the websites the com-pany has created have been recognized as “Best Website in the Storage Industry.”

When MBA member and Ed’s nephew Pete Greve passed away in 2009, Ed stepped in and has taken the MBA by storm. He joined the board in 2010 as co-chairman for membership and has been instrumental in the growth of the organization.

He has been a member of the TGIF group for five years and has served as president. He assisted with the ambassador program, regularly attends MBA functions, served on the directory committee and self-lessly donates to the MBA, the organization’s auctions and other fundraisers. He supports the scholarship

scramble, works the MBA booth at the BIG O show and Western Douglas County Expo and has represent-ed the MBA at other sponsored events when the MBA asked for volunteers.

He has built his distributorship from one man, one office to six offices and 10 salespeople and has received several top distributorship awards over the years. Ed will tell you: “All business and networking aside, I really enjoy the friendships I have made from being a part of the MBA and becoming involved in the Millard Community.”

Midwest Laboratories was founded as A&L Midwest Laboratories in 1975 by John Torpy and Ken Pohlman. The origi-

nal location was 119th and Elm Streets, in the business building directly to the east of Krispy Kreme at 120th and Center Streets. A&L Midwest Laboratories started out as an agricultural laborato-ry conducting soil and plant testing. The company grew to include feed and water testing by 1980. In 1981, A&L Midwest Laborato-ries moved to its current location at 13611 B St. and in 1986 was purchased from its parent company and was renamed Midwest Laboratories. The company has since added analysis in the areas of Environmental, Feed, Food and Fuels. Midwest Laboratories cur-rently employs 132 full-time employees and services accounts in all

50 states. The original founders, John Torpy and Ken Pohlman, along with

John DeBoer continue to work and serve clients at Midwest Labo-ratories. The company has grown from one building to a campus of eight buildings. Since its inception, Midwest Laboratories has always offered its employees paid health care and a pension. These qualities have allowed the company to recruit and maintain some of the best chemists in the area.

Midwest Laboratories continues to grow and serve the needs of its clients and opened a new food laboratory in June 2014. Midwest Laboratories is looking to build on its current foundation by keep-ing its values rooted in the family business structure with the next generation of family members.

Susan’s counselor at Millard North said Susan ap-proaches challenges with a positive attitude and keeps things in perspective. Since an early age Susan has played soccer, and

competing in high school was an aspiration of hers. An injury one week prior to tryouts her freshman year pre-vented her from trying out. She used the six months of

healing to focus on her schoolwork and has maintained that focus. She became captain of the soccer team her junior year, but another injury ended her soccer career. Susan was able to refocus her energies to her educa-tion, other sports and community activities. She attends the University of Nebraska at Omaha and plans to take part in a graduate program.

Breanna’s counselor at school said Breanna is highly involved, intelligent, kind, respectful, hardworking and dedicated. A partial list of Breanna’s honors and awards include

Distinguished Young Woman of Nebraska, Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska Young Women of Distinction Award, Better Business Bureau Student Service Excellence

award, Rotary Youth Leadership Award and All Around Student of the Year in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Involved in many school sports and activities, Breanna

also finds time to help community organizations. Bre-anna is studying elementary education in college and plans to teach English as a second language.

Kevin has earned top grades in the most rigorous classes offered at Millard West. His counselor noted his positive attitude and his confidence are infectious and can have a positive impact in any classroom he is in. Outside school, Kevin volunteers at many events, such

as teaching Sunday school and working with disabled adults.

Kevin traveled to India and taught English, science and math to Tibetan monks. Kevin is a National Merit Finalist. Some of his extra-

curricular activities include Key Club, robotics, soccer, tennis, intramural sports, guitar, Boy Scouts, long boarding, kite surfing and more. Kevin plans to become a pediatric anesthesiologist.

Sarah attends the University of South Dakota and is pursuing a nursing degree. She has received many academic, vocational and leadership awards, including Discipleship Award, Runza Student of the Week and language arts outstanding student. She has been on the honor roll since ninth grade. The extracurricular activities that Sarah has been a

part of include National Honor Society, cheerleading, tennis, track, volleyball, ministry, speech, church and concert choir, SkyHawks for life, community service, school musical, speech, intramural volleyball, poetry out loud and FBLA. Sarah plans to be a traveling nurse for a few years

after graduation to help children in poor countries.

Baileigh was nominated by her counselor for this scholarship because of her perseverance through difficult situations. She said that if you were to meet Baileigh, none of her struggles would be apparent. Baileigh never gives up, and she seeks out positive

people in her life to reaffirm her goals. She has main-tained superior grades and has remained diligent about

everything that she needs to complete. Baileigh has been a varsity soccer player for Millard South all four years she attended. She attends the College of St. Mary and is pursuing a

medical degree. Her goal is to become financially stable and help her family. Baileigh has a caring heart and wants to help those in need.

Claire is originally from Cameroon in South Africa and was in middle school when she moved to the United States. Even though the transition was difficult, Claire has earned a 3.75 GPA and is in the top 25 precent of her class. She also lettered in academics three years in a row. Claire overcame the language barrier by ask-

ing questions in class and going in for extra help even though she sometimes didn’t need it, just so her teach-ers could get used to hearing her talk, which, in turn, helped them understand her better. Claire has volunteered for many community organiza-

tions and was on the track and field team.

2014 MBA Annual GalaHall of Fame Inductees

Millard Lions ClubThe Millard Lions Club was founded in 1946 by members

of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Millard and local business-men. Under the leadership of Harold Hultman, Harry P. Andersen, George Russell, Leonard Nelson, Frank Plymale and other community leaders and business owners, the club immediately became the community service leader. Among the group’s community projects, the Millard

Lions Club began a program in 1966 to give scholarships to graduating seniors from Millard High School. To date, it has granted over $115,000 in scholarships. Many of the individuals inducted into the Millard Business

Association Hall of Fame over the last seven years have been members of the Millard Lions Club.

Bank of MillardThree members of the Nelson family — Grover E. “G.E.” Nelson

and his sons, Grove E. Nelson and William A. “Bill” Nelson — were instrumental in the success of the Bank of Millard and the Millard community overall.

G.E. was born in Ben-nington in 1892. His professional career began as a teacher in St. Helena, Nebraska, in 1913. Later he took a job at a bank in South Dakota and then

worked at another bank in Elkhorn, Nebraska, in 1916. Later that same year, he came to Millard and helped found the Farmers State Bank of Millard. G.E. was instrumental in securing the deal that brought General Electric to Millard, which led to years of growth for the community.

Grove was born in Millard in 1920. A proud lifelong resident of Millard, he graduated from the busi-ness school of the Univer-sity of Nebraska in 1942 and enrolled in law school

there as well. He started working at the bank in 1945 and in 1965 was named bank president. He was also active in many community organizations and events. Grove fought against Omaha’s annexa-tion of Millard, eventually renaming the bank from Farmers State Bank to Bank of Millard so that the Millard identity would remain intact after annexation.

Bill was born in Millard in 1933. After graduating with a business administration degree from the University of Nebraska, Bill went to work for the bank as well. He worked part time at

the bank while attending law school at Creighton University. Bill became presi-dent of the bank after Grove’s retirement in 1965. He was also the CEO until the brothers sold the bank in 1985. Bill was active in many community organizations and was inducted in to the Millard Educa-tion Foundation’s Hall of Fame in 1986.
