RELAY FOR LIFE Millard West will be hosting, for the tenth year, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life the week-end of June 13-14. All events are held on our out-door track. DRUG DOGS ON CAMPUS Parents should be aware that as part of our continu-ous effort to insure a safe and secure environment, the district regularly brings in the services of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Drug Dogs. When the officer and dogs arrive on campus we immedi-ately go into a modified lock-down as the dog or dogs go about their business in the locker areas and also in the school parking lots. The dogs do not directly check students. We may occasionally clear a classroom of students, but tell them to leave their backpacks on the floor for checking. We are confi-dent that the knowledge of the possibility of a random search has helped to keep drugs off campus in many situations.

LOST TEXTBOOKS

Due to the high cost of textbooks and/or their replacement, we would like to request that you check your homes for textbooks and/or library books that belong to Millard West High School. Please request that your student check their lockers, cars, bedrooms, etc. for textbooks and/or library books that they are not currently using. Your student should return them to the school book-keeper, Mrs. Cindy Hamilton, to see if they have been assessed a fine for the textbooks, and/or library books. Mrs. Hamilton’s office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 daily. Thank you for your help in locating our lost books and keeping our replacement costs down.

DRESS CODE With the weather warming up it is important for students and parents to be aware of dress code issues at Millard West. All Millard West students are expected to wear shirts or blouses that completely cover the stomach, back, and shoulders. Examples of unaccept-

able dress include tank tops, midriff tops, halter tops, tube tops, spaghetti straps, etc. Students should also keep in mind that excessively short skirts and shorts are not permitted to be worn in the school building. Please refer to pages 18-20 in the Millard West Student Handbook for additional information regarding student dress guidelines. Millard West works hard to offer students a positive and produc-tive learning environment. Dress code guidelines contribute to the establishment of this environment. Advanced Placement Testing

AP Tests will be administered between Monday, May 4 and Friday, May 15 (see testing schedule). Testing dates are set by the CollegeBoard and can’t be changed. Late Testing Late testing is allowed by the CollegeBoard under very limited conditions. Alternate exams must be ordered and must be given on the assigned dates. CollegeBoard charges an additional $40.00 for each late exam given. Late testing is only permitted for specific emergency situations or district competitions. Late testing is not per-mitted for senior class trips, school assemblies, family vacations or family commitments. Any student who thinks he/she might qualify for late testing should see Dr. Kolc. General Testing Guidelines You must bring your student I.D., a pencil with eraser, and a blue or black pen. (Talk to your subject area teacher about whether or not calculators and what kind of calculators are allowed for certain tests. We will not provide any calculators). You must also arrive to testing on time. You will not be allowed to bring a cell phone in to testing. The CollegeBoard is very strict about this policy due to situations that have occurred across the country in the past. Do not bring your cell phone to testing. If you forget to remove it and do bring it, make sure you turn it in to the proctor at the beginning of testing. If it is discovered later that you had a cell phone during any of the test, your test (as well as others) may be dis-qualified.

Web-based Review Sources

Millard Public Schools has purchased access to the Gale Net web based resource which offers test preparation for many AP tests as well as other tests like ACT and SAT. This resource actually allows students to take practice tests and get feedback on their per-formance prior to actually taking the AP tests. This resource can be accessed through the Millard West web page and the Info Center or by the direct website address: http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/omah21245 . The password is mwhs.

The CollegeBoard also offers test prep materials and practice tests. Some of these resources are free; others cost.

http://www.collegeboard.com/?student or http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/prep.html

Through the CollegeBoard web site www.collegeboard.com/apstudents, students will also find more information about AP testing and different college requirements for scores on tests to earn credit and advance standing.

Please refer any specific questions about testing or the courses offered at West to Dr. Deb Kolc, 894-6001.

GUIDANCE NEWS

United States Service Academy Applications

Young Nebraskans, as a group have done very well in obtaining appointments to the U.S. Military, Naval, Air Force and Merchant Marine Academies. The appointment process typically begins with a written request to a U.S. Senator and/or member of the House of Representatives requesting a nomination. Selection committees evaluate the applicants and recommend a list of candidates for nomination to the service academies. A person who receives a nomination from a member of Congress is then further evaluated by the respective academies. The academies make the final appointment. If you are interested in making an application for a service academy, you should begin the process now by contacting the offices of Senator Johanns, Senator Nelson and Representative Terry. Application is encour-aged with all three offices. The contacts and deadlines for each office are listed below:

Campus Visit

The campus visit usually has a big impact on selecting a college; students should be-gin visiting colleges before the beginning of their senior year.

1. Plan ahead. Call the Admissions Office at the college you are visiting at least 2 weeks in advance to arrange the visit. Tell them who and what you want to see.

2. Get ready. Research the college before you go to visit.

3. Interview the Admissions Staff. See if your grade point average, rank, test scores, major areas of academic and extracurricular interests are available.

4. Take the campus tour. Ask about the library, computer access, housing, food, and job placement. (Anything you want to know. Ask the tour guides, students, and faculty).

5. Spend time in classes. What is the class size? Teacher/student ratio?

6. Explore on your own. Read a student newspaper. Study the posters. What is this campus’s personality? Does it match you?

7. Check out the community. What size is it? What entertainment is available? Restaurants? Shopping? Check out anything that is important to you to have in the community.

8. Take notes. Write down your impressions, especially if you need to make choices and comparisons later and can’t return for a visit.

9. Say thank you. Send a thank you, especially to your interviewer/interviewee.

10. Follow up. Let this visit and others help you start narrowing your choices. Get an application for admissions and scholarships, and if you really like this school, send the application in or complete it online in the fall (September /October).

Senator/Rep. Contact Person Phone Deadline

GUIDANCE NEWS

DRUG–FREE SUMMER

Each day in June, July and August, approximately 6,100 young people try marijuana for the first time. This is 38% more per day than during the rest of the year. Marijuana is more harmful than most parents think. It is especially risky for youth because their bodies and brains are still developing. It can be addictive; it can lead to behavioral problems, mental and physical health issues. It can also interfere with learning and school performance. Research shows that kids who often are bored may be at higher risk of using alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs. What is your child doing this summer? If he/she is spending all day watching TV, it may be time to look at this list of suggestions for things to do. Sports: encourage them to join a local sports team, to go inline skating or to play a couple rounds of tennis with you. Check your local parks and recreation department for more information. Spectator events: take them to a baseball game, basketball game or other event to see their favorite team. Mentoring opportunities: mentoring is a great way to serve your community and shows kids how to make a difference in both their lives and the lives of younger children. It shows kids they can impact lives positively. Volunteer opportunities: encourage your child to volunteer at a local organization, such as a homeless shelter, humane society, hospital, nursing home, or childcare center. Outdoor activities: amusement or theme parks, but also less costly options like fishing, camping, swimming, and hiking. Places to go: urge your child to check out great places like zoos, aquariums, and libraries. Creative activities: check out a local pottery studio or arts and crafts center, or learn to play an instrument.

Here is a S-U-M-M-E-R drug-free checklist: Have you set clear rules and let your child know that marijuana use is unacceptable? Have you talked to your child recently about the harmful physical, mental, and social effects of marijuana and other illicit drugs on young users? Have you checked to see where your teen is, whom he/she is with, and what he/she is doing? Are they with whomever or wherever they say they are? Have you talked to your child’s coach, employer and friends lately? Have you helped plan activities to keep your child busy?

Have you planned a family activity with your child in the coming weeks, such as going to the movies, taking a walk, or sharing a meal?

DON’T LET YOUR TEEN’S SUMMER GO TO POT! Kids who are not regularly monitored by their parents are four times more likely to use drugs. Teens who report they are “often bored” are 50% more likely to smoke, drink, get drunk, and use illegal drugs than kids who aren’t. Parents of teens with summer jobs still need to know how their teens are spending disposable income, what type of work place setting they are in, and who they are working with. Two-thirds of youth ages 13-17 say that upsetting their parents or losing the respect of family and friends is one of the main reasons they don’t smoke marijuana or use other drugs. Young people who learn a lot about the risks of drugs at home are up to 50% less likely to try drugs than their peers who don’t get drug information from their parents. In addition to parents, other adults who influence kids, such as camp counselors, coaches, physicians and employers, can and do play a vital role in keeping kids drug-free during the summer.

This message is brought to you by your Millard West SCIP team. If you have comments or questions please contact Stacie Felton, SCIP team leader at 715-6069, or [email protected].

The West High athletic staff would like to thank all of our parents, students, fans and the Millard West Omaha community for their enthusiastic support of our athletic and activities programs during the 2008-09 school year. Your support in attending, participating and following our programs is appreciated. How can you support Millard West Athletics and Activities? It’s easy! Here’s how: 1. Encourage your student/parent and friends to be involved in sports or organizations by participating or at-

tending West High activities. High school sports and fine arts performances are the BEST ENTERTAIN-MENT VALUE around! Not only does your attendance provide financial support, but it shows our stu-dents that we care about and are interested in their lives and the things that matter to them. Students at West put in a significant amount of time, energy and work into their school sports and activities. They de-serve our recognition for their contribution to our school community.

2. Encourage your student to purchase an activity ticket. It is $35.00 and allows the student to gain ad-

mission to any home athletic event at which admission is charged, without additional charge. It also allows them admission at student prices to all Metro Conference events and discounted tickets to the musical and school dances or music performances.

3. Come support the sports events you enjoy. All admissions provide income to pay for the cost of offering

20 sports and a comprehensive athletic program. A family pass is offered with 20 punches for $80.00. The family pass is transferable and can be used by anyone. A punch on the family pass equals $4.00 per admission, which is a savings of $1.00 off the regular adult admission for football and basketball.

2009-2010 admission prices are as follows: Varsity Football and Basketball Adults = $5.00 Students = $3.00 All Other Varsity Sports Adults = $4.00 Students = $2.00 Non Varsity Events Adults = $2.00 Students = $1.00 4. Join the Millard West Athletic Booster Club. Help this organization support our athletes and coaches

with parents’ nights, banquets and fundraisers to help us provide in areas where revenues don’t match needs. A booster club membership entitles each family to two booster passes which admit the holder at no charge to all West athletic events, EXCEPT VARSITY FOOTBALL AND VARSITY BASKETBALL.

Contact the Activities Office for more information on how to join.

April 30, 2009 Dear Parents and Staff, Millard School District is monitoring the recent outbreak of swine flu and is in close contact with the Douglas County Health Department. At this time, there is no immediate impact on Millard. In accordance with the Douglas County Health Department, we are taking the following precautions and urge you to do the same.

• Wash hands often with soap and water (proper technique is to scrub for 15 to 20 seconds). • Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands. • When using a tissue, put the used tissue in the waste basket and wash your hands or use hand

sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. • Keep your child at home if he or she is experiencing body aches, headache, chills, sore

throat, cough or is running a temperature. • The Douglas County Health Department advises that people who develop flu symptoms

remain at home for 7 days after onset of the illness. If symptoms persist longer than 7 days, then it is important to wait at least 24 hours after symptoms have resolved before sending your child back to school.

Our school custodians will provide frequent disinfecting of desks, counters, drinking fountains, door handles, restrooms, lockers and other places that are touched often by multiple people. Alcohol-based hand cleansers will be available in all classrooms as an additional measure but not as a replacement for frequent hand-washing. If you have a particular concern about swine flu, please call your personal physician or the Douglas County Health Department at 444-6427. For more information, please visit our website at www.mpsomaha.org .With your support, we will do everything necessary to protect the health and safety of our students and staff. Sincerely, Nancy Nielsen, RN Head Nurse Millard School District

•Late photos: We cannot guarantee publication. Please ask your photographer whether you are responsible for sending photos. (Many photographers submit for clients, often close to the deadline so it’s easier to keep track of which photos were sent.)

•Notification: We will display a list of senior portraits received the week following the deadline in the Commons area to ensure accuracy. Please ask your son or daughter to check this.

•Modifications: We will notify those whose photos do not meet specifications and will allow exactly two weeks for a resubmission within specifications to ensure placement in the yearbook.

•Registration pictures: If we do not receive a senior portrait and the senior had taken a registration photo, we will use that image in the yearbook to increase coverage of all seniors.
