Science and Social Studies Instruction Schedule: First two trimesters focus on Science.

Third trimester focuses on Social Studies.

Grades in Powerschool: One grade for Science and Social Studies.

Instruction Variety: – Projects and Labs– Technology and Videos– Tests and Quizzes– Note-taking– Application of Language Arts skills into content

Instruction Focus: real-life relevance, critical thinking, problem solving, written expression.

35 minute class per day.

Focuses on the writing process through mini lessons that students then model in their writing

Research based mini lessons

Writing will focus on narratives, informational text, and opinion/argument writing

Benchmark Literacy Program– Reader’s Workshop format

Mini lessons modeled by teacher then implemented by students 2 week units Small group with teacher at reading level

– Book Clubs Students will work with groups reading differentiated reading novels.

– Independent Reading Students will be expected to read 2 independent books each

trimester. Book report forms will be due on each book.

– Midterm Trimester #1 – Book #1, Summary/Review by Friday 9/19/14 – Trimester #1 – Book #2, Summary/Review by Friday 11/7/14– Midterm Trimester #2 – Book #3, Summary/Review by Monday 12/15/14 – Trimester #2 – Book #4 by Friday 2/27/15– Midterm Trimester #3 – Book #5, Summary/Review by Thursday 4/2/15– Trimester #3 – Book #6, Summary/Review by Tuesday 5/26/15

– Students will complete bellwork each day (Monday-Thursday)– Quiz over the two weeks of lessons will be every other Friday– Bellwork consists of comprehension skills, writing, grammar, and

vocabulary– Everything will be written/glued in “bellwork notebook”

Media Center visits bi-weekly

Books: – Whole class: Watson’s go to Birmingham 1963– Students will read 3 of the following: City of Ember, The Lightning Thief,

100 Cupboards, Al Capone Does My Shirts, Things Not Seen, Rules

Grading– 80% of grade is based on projects, tests, and quizzes– 20% of grade is based on homework and participation
