D id you know that the healthcare industry, which includes everything from hospitals and doctors’ offices to clinics and retirement homes, is the second largest employing industry in Northwest Indiana? With more than 43,300 people working in the industry, healthcare contributes nearly $2.8 billion to Northwest Indiana’s gross regional product. That’s about 8 percent

of the economy! Most importantly, jobs in the industry are projected to grow by 25 percent between 2012-2022. That means now is a good time to get training and start a career in this rewarding and necessary industry.

So, what kind of jobs are in-demand by local employers? The top three that don’t require education beyond an associate-level degree are Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical or Licensed Vocational Nurse, and Dental Hygienist.

MEDICAL ASSISTANTFirst of all, let’s look at Medical Assistant.

As a medical assistant, you’ll perform both administrative and clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Everything from appointment scheduling and maintaining medical records to taking patient histories and recording vital signs as you prepare patients for examination. In 2012 there were 1,865 medical assistants in the region, but that number is expected to grow to 2,447 by 2022. That’s a 31 percent increase, which makes sense with the entire industry experience significant growth throughout the region as well as the nation. This occupation can go by a few different names depending on the specialty of the practice you work for. Most commonly you’ll need to be certified for this role. As of 2015, wages were more than $28,000 for medical assistants in Northwest Indiana.

LICENSED PRACTICAL OR LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSES (LPN-LVN)

Next up is the job of Licensed Practical or Licensed Vocational Nurses (LPN-LVN). There are a few categories of nurse, and at this level you will be more focused on interacting with and caring for patients (as opposed to creating treatment plans or managing other nurses). LPN-LVNs check blood pressure and provide other basic medical and nursing care. In 2012 there were 2,073 LPN-LVNs and that is expected to grow to 2,637 by 2022. That’s a 27 percent increase, and an estimated 1,070 openings in 2022. To become an LPN-LVN you’ll need to complete a one-year accredited practical nursing program and get certified. In 2014 wages for LPN-LVNs were around $41,190 in Northwest Indiana.

DENTAL HYGIENISTFinally, what about Dental Hygienist? Dental

hygienists are the people who clean your teeth, take x-rays of your teeth and provide education and consultation on oral hygiene. They work alongside dentists at dental practices. Currently, dental hygienist is 25th on the Hoosier Hot 50 Jobs list for Northwest Indiana. In 2012 there were 597 in 2012 and it is projected that there will be 787 by 2022. That’s a 31 percent increase for a job which had annual wages of $68,821. Along with higher wages comes a higher level of educational requirement to get started; to become a dental hygienist, you’ll need to earn an associate-level degree.

These three occupations are accessible, in-demand positions, but they are just a few of the many jobs in the fast-growing healthcare industry. It’s a demanding field, but a rewarding one where your effort can have a direct impact to improve the lives of the people around you.

According to a 2015 Careerbuilder/Harris poll, some of the most common resume embellishments include inflating skill sets, overstating responsibilities, enhancing job titles, and claiming academic degrees that weren’t awarded.

Then there are the real doozies. One job hunter claimed to speak two foreign lan-guages—English and pig Latin. Another job applicant claimed to have won a Nobel Prize. One ambitious fellow claimed to have worked three jobs in three different countries—all at the same time. Another applicant claimed to be the president of the very company he was applying to.

Hiring managers read hundreds of re-sumes and job applications a month. They

are experts at it and can tell in a flash who’s exaggerating and who’s truthful.

When asked what would cause them to pay more attention to some resumes, the hiring managers responded—

“A resume that’s customized for the open position”

So, list the five skills required for the job and offer examples of your experience with each skill. If you’re missing one or two requirements, substitute something similar to show that you could quickly learn that skill.

“A resume that’s accompanied by a cover letter”

This is your chance to show that you are the human behind the resume. Explain

why you want to work for that company. Also offer a few good reasons why the hiring manager should hire you instead of someone else.

“A resume that’s addressed to the hir-ing manager or recruiter by name”

Address your letter to the hiring manager by name and she’ll see that you took the time to find out who she is. It says you’re serious about wanting to working for her.

Now, if you didn’t know, the hiring manager is usually the manager of the department where you want to work. If you want to work in sales, contact the sales manager. In maintenance, contact the the mainte-nance manager. At a small business, con-tact the owner. To get the manager’s name, call the company and ask the receptionist who answers the phone.

Another thing, reach out to your friends and see if they know a mutual friend inside the company who would recommend you for employment. You are five times more likely to be hired if you have an inside friend.

Now you know.

Funding through the Northwest Indiana Workforce Board made it possible for 13 WorkOne clients

to complete the Certified Production Technician (CPT) training in March. The 12-week training program was conducted through Ivy Tech and will contribute to filling skill gaps often existent throughout the local manufacturing industry. WorkOne clients who completed the program will be better prepared to secure an entry level position with a manufacturer. In addition to the CPT certification, the graduates also received their White Belt Certification which trains individuals in quality assurance, problem solving, customer relations, teamwork, and eliminating waste.All of the graduates were invited to a job informational session with a large Hammond manufacturer, while two graduates gained employment with Albanese Candy Factory and two others were interviewing for an On-the-Job Training (OJT) opportunity with a Gary manufacturer.

Attend a job fair and you could meet dozens of employers—face to face, all in one place, all in one day. Don’t be shy--employers are there to meet you!

Here are some tips to get the most out of the job fair:

Tell the recruiter that you would like to apply for that job.

Offer the recruiter your resume.

Ask how you can schedule a job interview with the hiring manager.

Ask for the recruiter’s business card so that you may follow up after the job fair.

Thank the recruiter with a smile and offer another handshake.

I’ve Got Skills serves as an introduction to the job search process from the customer perspective. A good resume is vital to getting interviews and eventually landing a job, but for a lot of job seekers the question becomes “What do I put on the resume?” or “What do I say in an interview?” This session guides customers through the process of identifying their skills. It provides the customer with the information they will need to create an accurate resume and also prepare them to discuss their value to an employer should they get an interview. Getting More Out of ICC introduces customers to Indiana Career Connect. It covers the process of creating a profile properly and the importance of completing the personal assessments (matching percentages, etc.). Building Your Resume in ICC deals exclusively with the resume builder function in Indiana Career Connect. Northwest Indiana is home to over 30 adult education and learning sites

Providing FREE classes!Many areaadult education programs can help you:

n Brush up on basic math, reading and writing skills before registering for collegen Prepare you for the H.S.E. examn Strengthen your English language skills and adapt to practical everyday situation in the U.S.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)Addresses basic skill needs; e.g., reading, writing, language and math.

Adult Secondary Credit (ASC) Provides the opportunity for those who didn’t finish high school to return as adults and complete credits toward a regular high school diploma.

High School Equivalency (HSE) Preparation (formerly GED Preparation)Prepares student to pass the exam for the HSE diploma-the equivalent to a credential for high school completion. The actual HSE testing is only offered at a few sites.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Provides English language instruction to non-English speaking adults along with practical skills for everyday personal, social, and working situations.

*Note: Many adult education locations may require an annual $20.00 administrative fee to cover books, materials, and/or supplies, however instruction is free.

Employers of minors who are 14, 15, 16 or 17 years of age are required by law

to post the maximum number of hours that minors may be permitted to work in each day of the week. The information must be posted in a conspicuous place or in places where notices are customarily posted. For a poster or for further information, please visit www.in.gov/dol/childlabor.htm.

Breaks Requirements For MinorsWorkers under the age of 18 who work 6.0 hours or more are required to take 30 minutes of documented breaks. The minor may take two 15 minute breaks or one 30 minute break.Breaks must total 30 minutes or more, but never less.
