(BPT) - Though the U.S. economy has been gradually improving, job changes - both involuntary and voluntary - remain a fact of American working life.

“It’s also a fact that bills need to be paid whether you’re employed or not,” says J.J. Montanaro, a certified financial planner with USAA.

To help you cover expenses and protect your finances as you transition from one job to the next, Montanaro offers these tips.

DECIDE hOW TO COLLECT YOUR final payIf leaving your job wasn’t your idea, your employer may provide a severance package to ease the financial pain. Amounts vary, but one or two weeks of salary for each year you’ve worked at the company is typical. If you’re given a choice of a lump sum or a stream of payments, consider these factors:

* Benefits. If employee benefits (health care, life insurance, long-term care) continue as long as you’re receiving payments, you may want to take the option that prolongs them.

* Your financial discipline. Afraid you might squander a lump sum? If your severance payment provides enough cash to justify dividing it up, choosing periodic payments will help keep you in paycheck mode.

workOne CareerConnect . September| October 2016 page 5

FIle FOr unemployment benefitsIf your employer let you go - provided you weren’t fired for misconduct - you’ll probably qualify for unemployment benefits. If you quit, usually you can collect benefits only if you left for “good cause,” which generally means there was a problem at work or personal situation so difficult that you had no alternative.

If you think you’re eligible, don’t procrastinate. It may take two to three weeks to process your claim, so contact your state’s unemployment office pronto. While each state’s program varies, you can generally count on benefits to last 26 weeks, with federally funded emergency unemployment benefits extending up to 73 weeks in some states. Benefits are based on your income and how long you were employed.

If you separated from the military under honorable conditions, you may also be able to claim unemployment benefits through your state of residency. Check with your state department of labor to get the lowdown.

reduCe yOur spendingIf your decision to leave was involuntary and your next employment is an unknown, it’s important to preserve your cash while you’re out of work; this can require a top-to-bottom examination of where your money goes. “This exercise can help keep you afloat today and be an engine for paying off debt and saving once the paychecks start again,” Montanaro says. Put off big-ticket purchases and reduce discretionary expenses as much as possible.

STreNgTheN yOur emergenCy funduse your severance pay, unemployment benefits and any money you can save to build a cash stockpile. Keep enough money in a savings account to pay at least three to six months’ expenses. For a higher interest rate on the rest of your cash, build a short Cd ladder or open a variable rate Cd. Be careful not to lock away money that you’ll need. If you served in the military and made tax-free contributions to the Thrift Savings Plan, you may be able to tap that money without the taxes and penalties associated with most retirement money.

AvOId CleANINg yOur finanCial slateWhile you may be tempted to use your severance or other assets to pay off your car, credit cards or other debt, you may be better off making only the required or minimal payments. This strategy can stretch your cash and help you meet living expenses in case a new job isn’t right around the corner.

revIeW yOur health insuranCe optionsAt most companies, federal law allows you to keep your employer-provided health insurance for up to 18 months. Prepare for sticker shock: you will be responsible for the entire premium - what you paid, plus any amount your employer paid.

PrOTeCT yOur retirementIf you have a 401(k) or other employer retirement plan, avoid the temptation to cash it out when you leave. In addition to jeopardizing your security when you retire, you could pay a steep price in the form of income taxes and penalties. Instead, roll the money over to an IrA or leave it in the employer plan.

are you looking to start your career soon? A good first step is to participate in an

internship, and a great first step to finding and getting that internship is registering with Indiana INTerN.net (www.indianaintern.net).

Why would you want an internship? Because working an internship gives you a short-term activity that results in long-term experience and connections. Once you’re connected to a local business, regardless of whether you are paid or unpaid, you can explore the field while demonstrating to potential employers that you have what it takes to excel in the work place. Making connections and learning from more experienced workers will help you too, and at the end there is even the possibility in some cases that your internship can evolve into a full-time job offer.

Internships are rapidly becoming a required experience for students to increase their odds for job placement as they look to start their careers. A survey of employers conducted by The Chronicle of higher education several years ago showed that employers placed more weight on internships and employment during school than on a graduates’ gPA, what college they attended, or even their major. here in Northwest Indiana, employers are increasingly seeing internships as a way to get a head start on hiring the talent they need.

recognizing the value of successful internship matches, and seeking to help internships grow into a wider array of industries and occupations, WorkOne’s (parent company), Center of Workforce Innovations (CWI), has partnered with Indiana INTerN.net and with local colleges to do two things: increase the number of high-quality internships and smooth out the matching process between an interested student and local business internship opportunities so that

both can get the most benefit.

Already this partnership is proving successful, with new employers registering open internship positions throughout 2016. It’s easy to register and get started. While you may be tempted to jump right into browsing open positions, make sure to take a few minutes to fill out your profile as fully as possible. your profile will be used to match you up to an opportunity, so the more information about your interests and abilities, the better the match could be. Once that’s set up, you can you can search by industry so you just see the internships in the fields that you are interested in working in. you can also see the details up front, including what will be expected of you and whether or not you qualify.

So if an internship sounds right to you, what are you waiting for? you don’t have to wait to get out of school to start your career, and now thanks to Indiana INTerN.net it’s easier than ever to collect that valuable experience right now.

Visit www.indianaintern.net and get your career going today or call Sandra Alvarez at 219-462-2940, ext. 33 or email [email protected]

Manufacturing continues to grow with jobs that are considered high-wage and in-demand. With baby boomers retiring, employers are looking to fill many of these positions to keep up with the heightened demand for their services. And according to a recent deloitte study, by 2020 America will be the most competitive manufacturing economy in the world—surpassing China.

ManuFaCTuRing CaReeRS OveRvieW Manufacturing careers can be found in many industries from food to textiles to equipment, furniture, electronics and more. The duties of manufacturing jobs are varied, too, with some people assembling goods, some painting, upholstering or otherwise covering merchandise and others involved in quality control, inspecting products for flaws and making sure the goods meet set standards.

ManuFaCTuRing eduCaTiOn Typically a high school diploma was the minimum educational requirement for most types of manufacturing jobs. Much of the knowledge and skills needed now requires some post high school education and training. Training lasts anywhere from one month up to two years, depending on the type of work being done. Tool and die makers and machinists require the most training because of the expertise needed. vocational schools and technical colleges offer certification programs that provide the training. Machinists and tool and die makers then go on to serve apprenticeships before they’re considered fully trained.

21-year-old, Michelle Kmetz, had her high School diploma and some education in accounting,

but wanted a different career path. She wanted to get into manufacturing. her prior experience included customer service, but she lacked the skills needed to pursue a manufacturing career. She decided to go to WorkOne for help.

Kmetz attended skill building workshops offered by WorkOne. She received assistance to create a resume and completed Indiana Career

explorer (ICe) to research different career options within the manufacturing industry. Next, her goal was to gain the skills needed in the manufacturing industry to secure long-term employment.

She decided to participate in a Work experience Program (WeX) with Wastebuilt in Winamac, a national designer and manufacturer of waste equipment of all types. This opportunity

quickly turned into on-the-job training, where she was able to learn the job and get the skills needed through hands on experience.

Kmetz is now working full-time for Wastebuilt on their container line where she is excelling, using her skills and creating a solid career.

angela Stovall came to WorkOne Portage with experience as a Pharmaceutical Medical Assistant and educational background in Accounting and Business Administration. She didn’t have a set career goal in mind because she felt she lacked skills and proper credentials necessary for the type of job she wanted, so she decided to get further assistance.

Stovall participated in 16 workshops with presenter laura heim, while she was actively seeking employment. These workshops included InterviewStream®, Northwest

Indiana Professional Network (NIPN), and an advanced mock interview, where she was interviewed by three staff members to mirror a panel interview she had coming up with an employer.

Stovall admitted, “The mock interviews were the toughest part of the whole process, but the WorkOne staff helped me through it, each giving me different perspectives and pieces of advice to better prepare me.”

Stovall successfully found full-time employment with Porter County Central Communications 911 as a dispatcher and

where she will be making more than she was at her previous job.

To anyone thinking about going to WorkOne, she gives this advice, “yes, go to WorkOne to find a job. They all work well as a team to find the answers you’re looking for and they helped me become more confident and that confidence carried through to my interview. use WorkOne for what they’re there for.”

service skills. glover needed assistance from WorkOne to prepare for jumping back into the job market.

glover’s goal was to secure sustainable employment in either manufacturing, customer service, or management. WorkOne Knox provided services to help him meet his employment goals. he attended every available workshop he could to strengthen his skills. WorkOne funded an online program to get him certification through the Business Professional Customer Service program

at the International BusinessTraining Association. glover also took advantage

of the one-on-one career coaching at WorkOne with

Career Advisor Cherish Shafer, who acted as glover’s personal job coach. After several one-on-one sessions, glover had a job plan, a professional resume, and an interview strategy for the job he wanted. glover is now employed at Westrock, a leading global provider of paper and packaging solutions in Plymouth, as a master-cut operator making over $18 per hour. glover built his own success with his positive attitude and optimistic persistence.
