Why do employers use job applications? Many employers use applications as a way of standardizing the information they obtain from all job-seekers, including some things that you would not normally put on your resume. Your goal is to complete the application as completely and honestly as you can -- all the time remembering that the application is a key marketing tool for you in the job-hunting process. Remember that some employers will use your application as a basis for deciding whether to call you for an interview.
Arrive prepared with the information you need. Be sure to bring your resume, social security card, driver’s license, etc. You’ll also need addresses and phone numbers of previous employers, as well as starting and ending dates and salaries for each previous job. It’s always better to bring too much information than not enough.
Read and follow instructions carefully. Always take a few minutes to review the entire application. Some applications ask for information differently -- and all have specific spaces in which you are expected to answer questions. Think of the application as your first test in following instructions.
Complete the application as neatly as possible. Remember how important handwriting was in school? Neatness and legibility count; the application is a reflection of you. Consider typing it if you have access to a typewriter. If completing it by hand, be sure to use only a blue or black pen -- and consider using an erasable pen or taking some “white-out” to fix minor mistakes. Don’t fold, bend, or otherwise mar the application.
Things to Know Job ApplicationWhen Filling Out A
workOne careerConnect . July | August 2016 page 5
Tailor your answers to the job you are seeking. Just as with your resume and cover letter, you want
to focus your education and experience to the job at hand. Give details of skills and accomplishments, and avoid framing your experiences in terms of mere duties and responsibilities. Show why you are more qualified than other applicants for the position. Include experience from all sources, including previous jobs, school, clubs and organizations, and volunteer work.
Don’t leave any blanks. One of the reasons employers
have you complete an application is because they want the
same information from all job applicants. However, if there are questions that do not apply to you, simply respond with “not applicable,” or “n/a.” Do not write “see resume” when completing the application (but you can certainly attach your resume to the application).
Don’t provide any negative information. As with any job search correspondence, never offer negative information. Your goal with the application is to get an interview. Providing negative information (such as being fired from a job) just gives the employer a reason not to interview you.
Always answer questions truthfully. The fastest way for an application to hit the trash can is to have a lie on it, but that doesn’t mean you need to give complete answers either. For example, many applications ask your reason for leaving your last job. If you were fired or downsized, you should try to be as positive as possible and leave longer explanations for the interview; some experts recommend writing “job ended” as the reason you left your last job.
Do not put specific salary requirements. It is way too early in the job-seeking process to allow you to be identified by a specific salary request. You don’t want to give employers too much information too soon. In addition, employers often use this question as a screening device -- and you don’t want to be eliminated from consideration based on your answer. It’s best to say open or negotiable.
Provide references. Employers want to see that there are people who will provide objective information about you to them. Pick your references carefully -- and make sure you ask if they are willing to be a reference before you list them. Where do you get references? From past employers, to teachers, to family friends. Most young job-seekers have a mix of professional and character references, while more experienced job-seekers focus on professional references who can speak of your skills and accomplishments.
Keep your application consistent with your resume. Make sure all dates, names, titles, etc., on your application coincide with the information on your resume.
Proofread your application before submitting it.
Once you’ve completed the application, sit back and take a moment to thoroughly proofread the document, checking for all errors -- especially typos and misspellings.
Be prepared for all kinds of job applications, from simple one-page applications to multi-page applications. Regardless, take your time and do the best you can, always keeping in the back of your mind the goal of the application -- getting you an interview.
If you have not heard from the employer within a week of submitting your application, you should follow-up with the employer. There’s truth to the “squeaky wheel” cliché. Don’t be afraid to ask for an interview -- and ask to have your application kept on file

Keep Your Portfolio in Tip-Top Shape Have you ever been laid off, felt stuck, or burned out in your job? Maybe you’ve gone as far as you can in the company and you’ve hit a dead end. If so, you’ll want a new job fast. But, most people don’t keep their resumes up to date, and they don’t have their portfolio together. Without it, it’s impossible to pursue a new job. If you prepare a portfolio in advance, you can hit the ground running and chase those new job opportunities.
Your portfolio’s packing listCollect everything that is appropriate or informational about yourself and your career. Be sure to look over and edit your presentations as you put them together. Creating your portfolio is a fun process. You get to collect information about and review your successful career. As you put together your portfolio, imagine sharing the information at an important presentation. You’ll want to include visual content to highlight and enhance your portfolio. You also need to create portfolio formats that are ready to send via e-mail, and to present or mail in a hard copy. If you have not created a personal e-mail, Gmail is the established professional’s e-mail address.
You Get Another Benefit from Your PortfolioYou need to periodically refresh yourself on what is in your portfolio, as well as keep it current and in peak condition. You should always prepare yourself for something to happen to your job, so you will be ready if and when it does. This preparation will make you comfortable talking about yourself. You’ll feel more confidence after taking a good look at your career and how you got where you are. Your portfolio also helps when you are having struggles at work. You can revisit your successes, which will help ignite your self-confidence. Your portfolio will provide evidence and reminders of your career achievements. It represents you at your very best, and is ready to use at your next big opportunity.

WorkOne Knox Youth Career Advisor, Saundra Bailey, said her customer Brian Fulghum is a very nice person, “With a big smile all the time. He
made my job easy because he did everything I needed him to do.”
When 21-year-old, Fulghum, came to WorkOne, his goal was to gain skills and advance past his current situation—stocking at a local grocery store chain. He hoped to become a welder. After qualifying for the youth program, WorkOne paid for welding training and an On-The-Job-Training (OJT) work experience
with Wastequip. Fulghum worked hard with his personal
career advisor to create a resume and learn how to use IndianaCareerConnect.com, the state’s website for job searching, resume building, and assessment tools.
He received three American Welding Society (AWS) welding certifications, successfully completed his OJT, and is currently working as a full-time hoist mount installer. His employer said he does excellent work and that he has great attendance.
Catherine Baron was hesitant to go to public school. Instead she decided to be homeschooled by her mom. As years went by, the math got harder and Baron had enough, she gave up. Nine years later, she decided it was time to resume her schoolwork with her mom, unfortunately health problems arose and she was unable to follow through. After minor surgery and a lengthy recovery, she kept putting her future on hold to enjoy her newfound good health.
In Fall of 2014, Baron decided it was time to get her High School Equivalency (HSE). She was tired of seeing her friends progress while she felt like her life was at a standstill. To help her begin her journey of achieving her goals, she enrolled with the Valparaiso Adult Learning Center.
Baron came into the learning center facing some challenges. Her math skills weren’t where
she wanted them to be, but as she attended classes at the learning center her hope started to change. A month went by when she first came into contact with WorkOne. She began working with career advisor, looking at colleges, filing FAFSA, and other objectives to better her future.
Eight months had passed and Baron’s career advisor and adult education teacher urged her to take the HSE test. With her fees being covered by the WorkOne Youth Program, she took the test and passed! She didn’t stop there, with more encouragement from her advisor and teacher, she took the ACCUPLACER test and will attend Ivy Tech Community College in Valparaiso where she will study to become a Physical Therapist’s Assistant, specializing in sports medicine.
Baron also is gaining work experience as a teacher’s assistant at the learning center.
As an assistant, she was able to write a grant proposal to the National Literacy Coalition that helped fund the center for more supplies and she became certified through the International Business Training Association’s Customer Service and Leadership classes. She is now applying those skills on the job at Gordman’s while she continues to advance toward her goals.
Baron gives many thanks to the Valparaiso Adult Learning Center and WorkOne, “Because of the direction I received from the learning center and the support of WorkOne career advisors, I was able to get off the couch and start moving towards a positive future.”
obtain her bachelor’s degree in bio chemistry where she will then work in a lab for about a year. After she gets experience in the lab, she aspires to go back to medical school to become a pediatrician. n
