(BPT) - Career opportunities in technology continue to expand exponentially: the computer and information technology field is expected to grow 12 percent, adding nearly half a million new jobs by 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Occupational Outlook Handbook. What’s more, the median wage for people in the field is nearly $50,000 higher than the median for all occupations. If you’re considering a career in IT, but aren’t sure common jobs like coding or systems maintenance are for you, data analytics is a growth niche that may be worth a look, industry watchers say. In an industry that’s booming across all disciplines, anticipated demand for data analysts has inspired leading universities like Western Governors University (WGU) to offer new bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in the field. What is data analytics? You’ve probably heard the term “big data” - it’s the next big thing in IT. From social media and public records, to mobile phone apps that track spending habits, companies have more sources of consumer information than ever before. The sheer volume of information constitutes “big data,” and in the competitive business world, companies can gain an edge by using that information to better market their products to consumers. Data analytics helps companies manage big data and analyze it, so they can better target different audiences, differentiate their messages and product offerings, calibrate their market, and formulate sales and financial strategies. Companies that don’t know how to analyze their data

risk losing valuable time, money, market share, and customer loyalty. Using a variety of tools, techniques and strategies, data analysts help companies interpret their big data and find value in the information they gather every day from myriad sources. Opportunities in data analyticsBecause big data has become so pervasive, virtually every company needs a data analyst, from retail stores to the service industry, heavy industry to finance. A professional

with a data analyst degree might work on marketing strategy, marketing management, financial analysis, digital marketing, SEO management, customer experience management, marketing automation, web analytics management, capital and asset planning, property management, and human resources strategy and analysis. Marketing in particular offers many opportunities for people with degrees in data analytics. Finance, and capital and equipment management have also historically been data-

itIf you already have an interest in information technology, a career in data analytics may be for you if you also:

becoming a

data analyst• Enjoy problem-solving. Data analysis is like solving a complex puzzle you create yourself from the pieces provided by a number of different sources.

• Have good math skills. “Crunching numbers” is very much a part of the data analyst’s job, and strong math skills can help you better manage and understand the volumes of data you’ll deal with every day.

• Have strong communication skills. As a data analyst, you’ll need to be able to effectively explain complex concepts and data-derived insights in layman’s terms to executives with varying levels of technical knowledge.

• Excel at understanding both macro and micro patterns.

• Thrive on challenge.

To pursue a career in data analytics, you’ll also need a degree.

The field is growing at such a rapid pace that WGU, a

non-profit, online competency-based university with more

than 77,000 students nationwide, recently launched

bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in data analytics.

Faviola Salinas came to WorkOne after being unemployed for two months. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Business/Accounting, but struggled with securing interviews. Her main concern coming to WorkOne was to get back into the workforce. She was referred by a friend to career advisor at WorkOne Hammond, who assisted Salinas through their various services.

She participated in workshops and a mock interview to strengthen her skills for the interviewing process. Salinas received assistance on polishing her resume to make it more presentable in the job market. She attended all of the Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint courses to get a Microsoft Office Certificate. Salinas felt that the toughest challenge of the process was acquiring the skills needed for a specific position, but that didn’t stop her from meeting her goals.Salinas is now employed with Franciscan Alliance as a Community Health

Worker. She is happy with her new job and especially pleased to be back in the workforce.

She would like to share this advice to anyone thinking of going to WorkOne, “WorkOne is very helpful. Even though I wasn’t too interested in obtaining more training, the support I received from my career advisor was excellent. He would follow up with me and I would go in and we would apply for positions together. WorkOne is great for anyone who wants to get ready to apply for jobs or get training.”

WorkoneSuccessesWith determination and help from Workone She’s back in the workforce

Ashley Miller heard about Adult Education after talking with an old friend about wanting to obtain her High School Equivalency Diploma (HSE), formerly known as GED. She was interested in a career in the medical field, but she didn’t want a long-term schooling option to find a job. Being a single mother, Miller already had a lot of responsibility. She wanted to succeed for her daughter and her future. She started taking classes at the Lowell Adult Learning Center and obtained her HSE.

While taking classes at the Lowell Adult Education Center, she learned about phlebotomy training and certification. WorkOne Gary and Lowell Adult Education Center assisted in preparing Miller

for phlebotomy training. She passed her national certification and received transportation assistance, exam fees, and other incentives for receiving the certification.

Miller admitted that the process was lengthy, but well worth the wait. She is now working full-time with full benefits at PCL Alverno

Labs, where she is a Phlebotomist and does lab assistant work. She is happy with her employment and being able to provide her daughter with a better future.

Miller leaves this advice for anyone wanting to go to WorkOne, “WorkOne was really a blessing. If it’s something you want to do, buckle down, and do it. Work as hard as you can.”

Walter Collins came to WorkOne Portage looking for a new opportunity and a more advanced career path. He was interested in retail and security work when he first started his job search. As he worked with a career advisor, he was able to strengthen his resume and refine his job search to meet his employment goals.

Collins attended WorkOne’s free workshops where he learned how to prepare for interviews. He received multiple job referrals from staff and attended job information sessions held in the office, but he couldn’t seem to find what he was looking for in retail or security work. He changed his career path continuing his search in the retail industry, but added social work as an option.

After searching and following

up with job leads, Collins found employment as a Case Manager with Home Based Behavioral Solutions in Merrillville where he is enjoying what he is doing.

Some advice he would give to others thinking of going to WorkOne would be, “Go for it! There’s no reason why you shouldn’t. They provide you with more opportunities, tools, and resources to help you find what you are looking for.”

Next, tell your family. Tell them as soon as you get home. You might say, “I have sad news about my job. I’ve been laid off. The layoff is effective today and the decision is final.”

Acknowledge the emotions of los-ing your job. You may feel waves of anger and sadness following your layoff. These emotions are common and usu-ally pass after a week or so. If you are still grieving after two weeks, talk to your doctor. You may have a touch of depres-sion, which can be treated. If you have thoughts of hurting yourself, or hurting someone else, call 911. Help is only minutes away.

Relax and do the things you love to do. Try to get your mind off, “the job.”

Spend time with people you enjoy. Take a day trip. Volunteer. Take a class. Learn to play a musical instrument.

Sign up for unemployment ben-efits. Contact your state’s Unemploy-ment Insurance office to see if you are qualified to receive payments. Google, Unemployment Insurance (plus your state’s name) for office locations and requirements.

Extend your health-care coverage. Ask your former employer about the rules and costs for extending your health-care coverage under the COBRA plan.

Conserve your money. Hold a family meeting. Ask for ideas to cut unneces-sary spending. Get everyone to agree on

a spending plan—and stick to that plan.

Call your creditors. Mort-gage, rent, auto loan, insur-ance, utilities, credit cards, taxes—call them all. Explain that you have been laid off. Ask if you could go on areduced monthly-payment plan until you find another job.

Work on your resume. Read some help ads and job postings for your occu-pation to see which skills today’s hiring managers really want. Build your resume based on the skills today’s employers need.

Line up some job interviews. Make a list of all the people you know who work in the same occupation or field as you. Ask if they could help you get a job interview where they work. Also, visit the web sites of your favorite companies and apply for jobs through their employ-ment pages. Apply for jobs advertised in newspapers and posted online. Attend some job fairs and corporate open houses. Finally, sign up with an employ-ment agency.

LAYoFFHow to survive a

First, understand that it’s not your fault. A layoff is not a firing. You did nothing wrong. Future employers know that, “lack of work,” is the main reason people are laid off.
