Canon’s eagerly awaited replacements for the highly successful Color imageRUNNER C3200/C3220 series did not disappoint when BERTL put the Color imageRUNNER C5180 through its paces recently. The Color imageRUNNER C5180, (and its sister products the C4580 and C4080) is built upon a tandem color engine design. Canon has stepped up the maximum color throughout speed for its business color devices by a mighty 159 percent. The power behind the imaging system is delivered by the new Canon imageCHIP architecture, which the manufacturer claims provides greater concurrency and multitasking abilities, more speed and power for greater productivity. The device is available in two versions, the “base” model and the “i” model. The “base” model is highly customizable and offers a selection of print options to best fit demanding color environments. Printing is left optional, allowing users to choose from the Canon custom controller or one of two EFI printing solutions. Scanning is included with Canon network ScanGear and Color Universal Send in the price. However, the Universal PDF security and enhancement feature set kits are optional upgrade items. The “i” model is bundled with features providing out of the box business productivity. Printing is included as standard via the Canon custom UFR II / PCL Printer Kit- N1 and the Universal Send kit includes the PDF security and enhancement feature set kits. The scope of environments where the Color imageRUNNER C5180 is much more varied than some competing units due to the diverse range of upgrade paths that can be applied to the device. In its “i” version the device is a perfect fit in the corporate office delivering reliable copy, print, scan and fax (optional) to general office users. However, equipped with one of the two Fiery printing options, the device can be expected to handle a much more diverse range of color tasks and handle a much heavier workload than the Canon custom controller can accommodate. We would strongly recommend users think very carefully about what color needs they have now and what they envision needing in the next year or two before deciding on the version and upgrade route they decide to take. Remember that color processing demands are only going to go in one direction, and as color becomes a daily necessity for more and more users, an investment in processing power today can reap great rewards in human productivity in the future.

Paper Handling: Input Features Summary

Paper Handling: Paper Input

WHAT WE LIKED:

• Capacity for 550 sheets in the main universal drawers would allow a full ream of paper to be added without waiting for the drawers to be completely empty and also accommodate a full ream of thicker media stocks such as card stock or recycled paper.

• 12” x 18” support through the universal drawers and bypass allows users to create full bleed ledger/A3 documents such as product brochures, menus, etc., by trimming the unprinted borders.

• Paper cassettes can all be opened easily using the button release rather than bottom gripping handles as found on some rival devices.

• High standard and maximum capacity ensures that refilling is kept to a minimum.

• Solid tandem drawers and optional LCT ensure that reloading is carried out quickly and efficiently.

• Heavy media should be supported from all trays with the bypass tray going up to an impressive 140 lb. Index for professional cover quality output.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE:

• Automatic paper size detection would make reloading faster with less risk of media mismatching in hurried environments.

• Higher ledger and legal media support would benefit environments that handle a lot of document production larger than letter/A4 size.

• Support for coated media would allow for higher quality gloss covers to be produced in line, which is even more important as the device does not offer a post process insertion unit.

For more information on this topic go to www.bertl.com

The main paper trays can support up to 12”x 18” paper size and up to 110 lb. Index/216gsm paper weight.

Paper Handling: Output/Finishing Features Summary

Real World Testing: Advertised speeds are always quoted using the simplest route, in and out of a device. In the real world, users choose finishing options, incor-porate multiple media supplies, print in duplex, and add other elements that can impact bottom-line speed. BERTL evaluates these factors looking at how the same job outputs at different speeds when different factors are applied. In the table, bottom right, the finishing im-pact is measured by running a 12 page job 10 times through a device and adding a different finishing attrib-ute each time. In the table, bottom left, the impact of incorporating multiple media sources into a single docu-ment is measured. In this instance, a 50-page docu-ment is printed first using a single media source/ It is then timed using the bypass tray for front and back cov-ers, plus pages 10,20,30, and 40 from a separate media tray.

Paper Handling: Paper Output/Finishing

WHAT WE LIKED:

• Heavy card support through the duplex unit lets users produce professional grade presentation materials.

• Support for oversized ledger/A3 stock in the duplex unit allows full bleed double sided brochures and other marketing materials to be produced.

• Tight stacking of collated sets makes offline finishing tasks, such as perfect binding or professional punch, less time-consuming.

• Saddle-stitch booklet making is intuitive from both the desktop and the walk up panel, allowing even novice users to get this useful task correct the first time.

• No slowdown in single staple or double staple mode allow finished documents to be produced as productivity is unfinished.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE:

• Limited capacity when printing saddle-stitch booklets results in short print runs before user intervention is required to empty the finisher output area.

• A z-fold unit would be beneficial, allowing color spreadsheets and plans to be incorporated into letter/A4 sized presentations.

• A tri-fold unit would allow the device to produce mailing materials for insertion into C10 envelopes in a single step.

• Mixed media source feeding resulted in a significant slowdown in the device when compared to single source printing.

Maintenance Features Summary

Routine Maintenance

Above: BERTL analyst performs routine maintenance on the Canon Color imageRUNNER C5180. Below: Step-by-step instructions walks the users through the paper jam process.

WHAT WE LIKED:

• Easy, mess-free replacement of toner units and the waste toner container was appreciated.

• The imaging drum surfaces are kept well away from end user, avoiding the risk of damage during jam removal or other routine maintenance tasks.

• Paper jam access points located along the right side of the device made removal easy. • There is good walk through on the color touch screen when paper jams occur with dynamic flash demonstrations of moving elements. • A relatively simple paper path compared to some other units resulted in fewer jam points and easy access for users. WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE:

• The imaging drums are not readily replaceable by end users, requiring screws to be removed, which may put off most users. • Paper jam removal points along the right side demand more space to allow access doors to open during jam removal, increasing the overall footprint.

For more information on this topic go to www.bertl.com

The paper jam removal process was easy, intuitive and no hidden jam points were found.

Device Management

Canon’s Web browser Remote User Interface device management utility

WHAT WE LIKED:

• Well laid out easy to navigate Web browser interface

(Remote User Interface) allows both experienced and novice users to quickly gain access and manage a wide range of features on the device.

• Extensive Import/Export capabilities for address book entries, Web Access favorite lists and other settings, can make installing replacement or additional devices into an organization a much more efficient process.

• Extensive job queue viewing and management capabilities from both Remote User Interface and via Fiery’s Command WorkStation (for print jobs only), including the ability to promote and pause jobs waiting in the queue plus the ability to see a snapshot of the entire workflow queued at the device by viewing one combined list of copy and print jobs.

• The ability to set up extensive security measures across all functionality disciplines was straight forward and easy to implement.

• The ability to see the actual status of a print job in progress so a user has an indication of how many pages are left to complete.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE:

• The ability to upload a .CSV or other industry standard data list format when importing address book entries limit users to Canon’s own generic address book format or LDAP databases.

• A multi-tiered favorite filing system for Web Access management, which would be especially useful in large organizations with lots of users taking advantage of the feature.

• An indication of how much toner and other supplies is left using the average coverage of the device to date as the guiding document workflow indicator.

For more information on this topic go to www.bertl.com

EFI Command WorkStation, providing a high degree of print man-agement and monitoring flowing through the controller.

Device properties can also be viewed directly from the Fiery printer driver on the ColorPASS-GX100 controller.

Security Features Summary

Security

WHAT WE LIKED:

• Extensive user authentication capabilities restrict access to the device across all disciplines as required.

• Single Device Login and Single Sign On options allow for faster more efficient user access.

• SSL for secure communication between the device and network resources ensures that user names and passwords be kept secure during network transit.

• Secure fax transmission and fax forwarding to PIN protected mail boxes or email addresses ensures that incoming faxes do not get intercepted.

• Multitiude of security measures would safeguard interaction with the SMTP mail server including POP and SMTP authentication before login.

• Secure scan transmission with encrypted PDF capability prevents intercepted scan-to operations from being opened and deciphered.

• SNMP v3, IPv6, port and protocol lockdown and IP filtering support reduce opportunities for would be hackers to gain access to the network through the MFP.

• With the Background Numbering in Copy mode, unique copies of confidential documents distributed at meetings can be signed out to each participant. Document leaks are then easy to trace back to the original recipient.

• A removable hard drive option on the ColorPASS-GX100 print controller adds greater security when processing sensitive information on a repeat basis, allowing documents to be stored during office hours and locked up after hours.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE:

• Secure print displays file names pending PIN release to any user either from the desktop or the walk up panel. We would like to see this information hidden behind the PIN access. • MAC filtering would add another layer of hacker access prevention.

For more information on this topic go to www.bertl.com

The password entry provides security for sensitive and confidential information. This first line of defense against would-be hackers pre-vents unauthorized users from viewing or accessing these documents. Users can easily set up user ID and passwords for the secure print option or for mail boxes.

Security

Secure / Locked Print

The Canon Color imageRUNNER C5180 includes a secured print feature as a standard feature. Users can send jobs with a PIN using the job tab in all drivers selecting “Secured Print” from the output method drop down menu. Users have an option to send jobs using their native file name or changing the file name. The name changing ability is important as the device does not disguise the name of any secure print job residing on the device, with any user able to walk up to the device, go to the print queue and see the list of print jobs waiting to process including all secured print jobs. We would like to see the list of jobs hidden from unauthorized eyes with viewing only granted after the PIN has been entered, thus allowing decision makers using the secure print feature to leave print files named as is rather than waste time renaming everything to retain confidentiality. To access secured print jobs, users select the print icon at the bottom of the touch screen and view the status window. Once a secured print job has been selected the user is asked to enter the PIN. Users are unable to select more than one secure print job at a time, which is a further productivity issue for users carrying out a lot of secure printing tasks. While the above commentary paints the Canon’s Secured Print feature in a poor light, there is a far superior alternative BERTL suggests users use when carrying out secure printing tasks. It is the mail box feature, which we have already discussed in depth. The mail box can be PIN protected, providing the same lockdown capability as secured print. However, with the mail box, users hide the names of their files and can also select as many of the files to release into the print queue as they wish in a single operation. The mail box does need to be first set up by, in most instances, an administrator who may make the secured print a preferred solution for occasional users and visitors, but for repeat users it is an investment in time that is well worth the reward.

Above: Users can view a list of documents from the secure print job queue before entering any passwords. The documents are then selected for printing.

Below: The password is prompted for entry, and the finishing op-tions can be selected for printing or deletion.

Accessibility

WHAT WE LIKED:

• While not offering an adjustable tilting capability, the large, full-color touch screen control panel is sloping, which makes viewing easy for users that stand and for people in wheelchairs. A stylus pen is also available for easier use of the keypad and touch panel.

• Hard buttons on the control panel are concave versus convex, as found on rival units. The concave buttons are easier to use by the physically impaired.

• Braille markers are found on key buttons aiding navigation for the visually impaired.

• The low grip angle of the document feeder allows for easy repeat platen scanning tasks. Canon also offer an ADF Access handle.

• The Remote Operator Kit provides the full feature set to users from a desktop location rather than the limited feature set offered within the kit from some rival manufacturers.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE:

• The paper drawers include a sliding guide on one axis but the other relies upon locking a guide plate into pre-cut holes in the cassette base. This process can be difficult, especially in the lower cassettes for wheelchair users. We would like to see sliding guides on both axes.

• Tilting control panel would make access to the touch screen even easier for people in wheelchairs.

• A simplified touch screen display option that would make the icons even larger as some of the selection areas are still quite small, especially the QWERTY keypad that could make life difficult for people with motor control issues.

For more information on this topic go to www.bertl.com

Above: Users with disabilities will have easy access to the touch screen control panel and its functions. Below: The document feeder can be held open at a low angle, aiding repeat platen copying for wheelchair users.

The unique paper drawer handles on the Canon Color imageRUNNER C5180 allows users in wheel-chairs to simply push the large spring-loaded buttons to open the paper trays for loading paper supplies and changing paper sizes. Some users may have a problem accessing the lower paper draw-ers.

WHAT WE LIKED:

• We noticed great image quality with vibrant colors, lifelike reproduction of skin tones and natural objects, deep rich shades and fine contrast and crisp lines and fonts. • The very intuitive menu system allows the device to be used efficiently by occasional / temporary users in the office copy room. • Copy control can be set to only force authentication for color copying, thus allowing day to day monochrome copy workflow to operate at maximum efficiency.

• Through a combination of job build, job block combination and mixed-original workflow features, users are able to build up complex batch copy jobs switching between media sizes, original types (text, photo), simplex or duplex, and image-contrast levels. • Express Copy mode displays frequently used copier settings on one well-organized screen so that users can quickly program copy jobs and includes 10 favorite keys. • The job completion email notice is a useful feature that allows users to return to their desk with jobs in the queue and be informed when they should return to pick up their output. • There is virtually no drop off in text image quality over multiple copy generations. WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE:

• The reversing document feeder design results in longer original processing wait times when handling double-sided originals than a single-pass duplex scanning alternative. • Mixed original copying was significantly slower in the job preparation stage than auto-detection mode, which prolongs user time at the device.

To assess copy productivity, BERTL ran a series of 5-page copy jobs to investigate the impact of the first set out on overall engine speed and also to investigate whether specific job at-tributes impact engine throughput capability. Each job was set

up by feeding paper from the shortest paper route to the short-est available output destination. A separate test found in the finishing section looks into the productivity impact of adding finishing/output destinations.

Copy Productivity

Real World Testing: Of course, judging productivity based solely on green button to output tray excludes the user, who is the most important element in the equation. BERTL takes the user into account and looks at how the document feeder productivity on different workflow tasks impacts the amount of time a user has to wait at the device before they can walk away with originals in hand. BERTL also evaluates how much time is spent building jobs, using the touch screen interface before the green button can be selected.

Batch and Mixed-Media Copy Capabilities Batch /job build scanning beyond the capacity of the document feeder Yes

Batch/job build scanning incorporating both document feeder and platen scans Yes

Change original type (text, text/photo, photo modes between scans) Yes

Mixed-media size scanning capability Yes

Change between simplex and duplex original scanning in a job build session Yes

Real World Testing: In a perfect world, all original docu-ments are the same size, the same type, and require the same imaging settings. BERTL looks beyond the perfect world to see how devices help those working with difficult workflow situations. Take the example of a paralegal scanning a case file. The file could well contain both letter- and legal-sized docu-ments, requiring a mixed media capability. The report text pages are best captured using the document feeder in Text or Text/Photo mode. However, the accident scene photographs are best scanned using the platen (to avoid damage) in Photo mode, which captures the halftone de-tail to a much better degree. There may also be simplex and duplex pages in the same batch. Rather than waste more paralegal time, it would be ideal to be able to switch between single-sided and double sided scanning.

Image Quality Summary

Image quality was to a high level as expected. Skin tones were appealing and lifelike. Solid shades and greyscales were reproduced with little to no banding. There was some hint of cyan in 25-50% greyscales when reproduced on a page containing color elements. Fonts and fine lines were reproduced well. Text mode resulted in some photographs suffering from a polarization effect. Photo mode suffered from less degradation of text and fine lines that some other units we have seen but for general use we would recommend the text / photo mode be left as default to guarantee good quality output wit the minimum user intervention.

Copy Image Quality

Real World Testing: Generation Copy Quality When evaluating MFP image quality, analysts are always working with the best possible scenario by using high qual-ity paper and first generation pristine masters. However, the real world is often very different, with people often working with second or third generation copies. Just con-sider a law firm. The firm is sent a COPY of the materials (quite possibly copies of originals) by a new client (the master set). They then make multiple copies of the master set (working copies), which get passed around the lawyers and paralegals involved in the case. After redaction and other editing work, the working copies may be scanned to create electronic files that are preferably searchable through Optical Character Recognition (OCR). To simulate this real world practice BERTL uses a test pat-tern of its own design, and, using generic Staples copy paper, makes first, second, and third generation copies of the test sheet in text mode. These copies are then scanned (using the same device) at 600 dpi in text mode and fed through ABBYY FineReader 8.0 at BERTL’s work-flow lab. The results are displayed in the chart below.

A BERTL Image quality copy reproduction test pattern with multiple fonts in varying sizes, colors and backgrounds from 4 pt. Fine line grids in black and blue from 0.25 pt . upwards. Greyshades from 0—100 per-cent in sliding scale and 5 per-cent block increments. Portions of the copied test chart are displayed on the following page

WHAT WE LIKED:

• The ability to store document output properties is a valuable time saver and differentiator between the device and many of its competitors, which forces users to add finishing features each time a document is reprinted.

• Combining multiple files into a single job can make multi-author tasks easier to manage.

• Attaching documents stored in the mail box to outgoing communications can be a valuable, time-saver. The walk-up user only has to scan in a personalized accompanying email or fax header rather than having to scan the entire document.

• Advanced editing, page deletion and insertion capabilities allow large documents to undergo multiple version amendments without users, rather than having to delete the entire document and resubmit a new file that can be labor intensive and bandwidth hungry.

• The optional Web access feature provides users with the ability to browse the Internet directly from the device and print pages, even attachments, without having to return to their desk.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE:

• The ability to create personal folders within a mail box rather than using the flat storage design would aid in organization.

• Productivity would be further increased by adding the ability to create collated batch jobs from the mail box where a selection of documents are printed as a batch set but are treated as individual pieces that should be finished in isolation.

• Print on demand from portable media sources like USB memory sticks or SD cards is a useful feature that lets walk-up users take advantage of the device in airport terminals, hotel business lounges, or Internet cafes.

Print Productivity

Evaluating print productivity is not as simple as timing copy jobs. The printing process involves several steps and can be impacted by a variety of factors along the way. The document must first be spooled by the printer driver into a PCL or PostScript file. The PCL or PostScript file is then sent to the printer where it is raster image processed (RIP) into image data by the device processor. The image data is then sent to the marking engine and output as printed pages. There are three obvious factors highlighted above (spool time, rip time, and print engine speed), which can all make or break a productivity time. Add into the equation other factors such as concurrency and contention, and one would have a real world not quite so clean cut as some analysts would have people believe. BERTL provides a selection of print productivity data: • Raw RIP and print speed data (as displayed below) • Concurrency and contention workflows (see next

page) • Driver design on spool / rip times (when a Windows

print system driver is offered alongside PCL/PS)

Real World Testing: Batch Printing Batch Printing: In the real world, people are often faced with multiple files that need to be treated as a single print workflow entity. There are two main scenarios for this: 1) Multiple authors contributing to a single document 2) Collated sets comprised of multiple individual docu-ments. These two workflow scenarios put MFPs and printers to task, as they demand more than just the ability to spool, RIP, and print a file as fast as possible.

Real World Testing: Concurrency or Contention? MFPs by their nature are designed to handle multiple tasks, acting as the printer, copier, scanner, even fax. BERTL looks at whether these tasks impact each other. In BERTL’s concurrency test, a large print file is submitted to print. When spooling has completed, the rate pages are exited is measured. The BERTL analyst then carries out tasks to see if the print output rate is affected.

Real World Testing: Network Traffic Network printing devices may often face a queue of jobs stacked up for processing during busy periods of the day. During BERTL’s network workload tests, analysts queue a series of jobs at a paused print driver. The jobs are ar-ranged in order of their raw application file size per page. The purpose of the test is to illustrate how well a device handles a stream of jobs and how the queues make-up can have a major impact on a device’s performance. BERTL is not trying to suggest that a series of jobs is an example of a typical office as this would be misleading. The series is sent to the printer with the lowest file size per page sent first (minimizing the processing workload at the start of the test and allowing efficient fat engine devices to continue processing jobs while the print engine outputs the first). The queue is then reversed and resubmitted with the larg-est file size per page sent first, placing the greater strain on the processor rather than the engine speed.

Setting Up Hot Folders

Setting up a hot folder is easy. Simply create a folder, then run the Fiery hot folder application specifying the folder just created as being the hot folder repository.

The next step is to specify settings for the hot folder, i.e what will be applied automatically to the file when it is deposited. This is divided up into job settings, imposition settings and filter set-tings.

Once set up, users simply drag and drop or cut and paste files into the hot folder for one touch print processing.

Using Impose v2.6

Users first select the file they wish to impose, and by right clicking, the Impose menu item can be selected.

Users can choose from a selection of imposition layouts with thumbnail views showing the lay out for each option. Users can then select a size to fit, leave dimensions alone and other options.

Users can save their custom templates for future reuse as one can see above where a BERTL analyst saved a 2-Up Perfect Bind on 11” x 17” layout template.

Without needing to delve into a manual or go through a lengthy training demonstration, BERTL analysts were able to produce a range of professionally lay out document using the intuitive and user friendly EFI Impose v2.6.

WHAT WE LIKED:

• Fast scanning of color and monochrome documents coupled with a 100-sheet capacity feeder makes the device a productive scanning resource.

• With zero original processing slowdown in compact and OCR PDF modes, users can minimize the amount of “dead time” spent away from their desk when scanning large documents.

• 100 percent OCR data capture accuracy on black fonts in compressed PDF mode down to 6 point.

• OCR on the fly and searchable PDF creation is a valuable time saving feature that clearly differentiates the device from its peers.

• The high compression PDF mode reduces bandwidth of files significantly, which will reduce a risk of firewall rejection and increased transmission rates.

• Extensive security capabilities, including PDF encryption and permission settings, make communications more secure and users less at risk of personal information data breaches.

• Batch and mixed media modes allow complex mixed document sets to be combined into a single scan job more easily than rival units.

• Preview mode allows users to check if each page of a scanned document has been captured before releasing the job to the destination.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE:

• A color dropout capability would allow users to remove unwanted form backgrounds, highlighted edits to text documents, and other areas where color can have a negative impact on scanning workflow.

• The mixed media mode needs to be more efficient. While it is a useful feature, it resulted in a significantly longer time period for users at the device compared to the default auto setting.

• A single-pass, straight pass duplexing scanner would reduce the curvature and stress placed on originals during scanning. This would result in more reliable scanning of delicate and tough originals and would offer more productive duplex scanning speeds versus the traditional reversing design used in the device.

Scan Data Capture Accuracy

Real World Testing: Scanning in its simplest workflow is to convert a hard copy printed image into an electronic image. This may be all that is needed when sending a scan to email or making an archive copy of an order using scan to desktop. However, the vast majority of scanning workflow involves converting hard copy into an intelligent image that can be further processed by OCR engines, forms processing applications, or other automated informa-tion management processes. In all of these workflows, the conversion of text (captured as an image by the scanner) into editable, searchable text is a critical first step. To in-vestigate this important workflow issue, BERTL ran a se-ries of standard test patterns with multiple font types, sizes, and colors, capturing the data at various resolutions using both text and text/photo settings. After scanning each page of its test originals, BERTL ana-lysts ran the scanned files through OCR software—ABBYY FineReader 8.0 in default configuration. The accuracy of the scanning process at the various resolutions and set-tings is reflected in the number of words that the OCR ap-plication converts correctly without human intervention.

Real World Testing: Measuring scan productivity with a stopwatch is only capturing a small part of the overall workflow picture. However, removing accuracy, network bandwidth considerations and other human intervention elements, such as jam rates, BERTL measures the time that a user spends at a device to carry out the initial scanning phase of getting the originals processed and into the device memory. To do this, BERTL uses 25 copies of a government agency form that is printed ini-tially in full color. The originals are then scanned at dif-ferent resolutions, creating PDF files and (if offered by the manufacturer) compressed and searchable PDFs. The time taken to get the originals through the docu-ment feeder is recorded. The time to get the files back to the desktop, FTP loca-tion, or email address is not an exact science. It relies on other network factors that are out of the user’s con-trol. The lower the bandwidth the faster the data trans-fer, whatever the bandwidths, so BERTL provides the file size created by each scan process.

Real World Testing: In a perfect world, all original docu-ments are the same size, the same type, and require the same imaging settings. BERTL looks beyond the perfect world to see how devices help those working with difficult workflow situations. Take the example of a paralegal scanning a case file. The file could contain both letter- and legal-sized documents, requiring a mixed media capability. The report text pages are best captured using the docu-ment feeder in Text or Text/Photo mode. However, the accident scene photographs are best scanned using the platen (to avoid damage) in Photo mode, which captures the halftone detail to a much better degree. There may also be simplex and duplex pages in the same batch. Rather than waste more paralegal time, it would be ideal to be able to switch between single-sided and double sided scanning.

Real World Testing: While scanning speeds and duty volumes may be based on perfect standard letter/A4 sized office-grade laser printer paper, there is a much wider range of media substrates that is commonly used and han-dled in the office world every day. Manufacturers advertise a range of media sizes and weights that they have tested and feel comfortable with their device handling efficiently. BERTL looks beyond the manufacturer quoted capabilities and on many occasions finds that the limits can be consid-erably extended to accommodate those occasions when office staff need to copy non standard office paper. Note: A device should not be considered a failure if it does not get a 100 percent success rate in any of the original handling tests. These tests are deliberately designed to push the boundaries.

Multifunction Triple Play Test

The Ultimate Multifunction Test: Manufacturers promote their devices as being multi-tasking, multi-functional solutions. BERTL aggressively tests this claim with its new Triple Play test. In BERTL’s other tests, analysts are careful to ensure that only one factor is entered into the equation at a time to provide the reader with specific result that stem from one user selection/action. In the triple play test, the device’s overall multifunctional capabilities are put under the microscope. A BERTL test master file has been created as a standard CMYK document, using Adobe Illustrator to ensure the highest quality original with vector graphics, then RIPped at 1,200 dpi into a PDF format using Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Professional set to Press Quality. This document contains Times New Roman and Arial fonts in 10 pt. text in black, blue and red on a white background, plus 12 pt. white and yellow text on a black background. The document is first printed using high quality color laser paper on the test device, using the PostScript driver set to its highest image quality to ensure the best print quality. The printed output is then copied in text mode, using default settings. The output is then copied (to create second generation output), and the second generation output is copied, creating a third generation copy.

The third generation output is then scanned at 300 dpi, using text mode, and converted into a PDF file. The PDF file is run through ABBYY FineReader 8.0 where the data capture accuracy is assessed, leaving the ABBYY FineReader 8.0 in default settings. The file contains 100 words across the multiple fonts and color combinations. To achieve a perfect 100 percent BERTL Triple Play score, the device would need to show all 100 words correctly detected by ABBYY FineReader 8.0 without a need for human intervention. This first one-of-a-kind multifunctional test will show users how an MFP affects a document throughout its entire potential lifecycle in both hard copy and soft copy formats.

The Canon Color imageRUNNER C5180 equipped with the ColorPASS-GX100 controller is a pure color power solution with something for everyone. The cost of the ColorPASS-GX100 will obviously be deemed prohibitive to many upon first glance. However, when you start to consider the savings in time, the simplicity at which many complex color tasks can now be accomplished, and the new workflows that can be accomplished in house, the investment in the higher powered RIP will in many instances prove to have a much faster ROI (return on investment) than many would think. While many may regard Fiery printing solutions as being reserved for the upper echelons of the professional color world, the new System 8 architecture has made the whole experience easier than ever for even the general office user to master in a short period of time. There are, of course, many features that will bewilder the general office user but are hidden in sub menus so as not to confuse the user. We would recommend becoming very well acquainted with the hot folder feature, especially now that EFI has included new filters to allow Microsoft Office applications to be dropped straight in as well and to drop in an image and PDF files. Marketing and creative departments should take a good look at Fiery Impose v2.6, which provides a wide range of layout options within an easy to use application. Existing users of Canon equipment will find the Canon Color imageRUNNER C5180 a breeze to use as the interface and feature set are identical to other Canon MFP products. First time users will also appreciate the intuitive, uncluttered interface that faces the walk up user. Image quality as expected from Canon was rich, vibrant and delivered a high class look and feel across a wide range of BERTL business and graphic art color output. We would like to see a few more finishing options (that Canon includes on its 7000 monochrome series) added to the device to allow it to be a one stop inline departmental color production printing solution. We would also like to see a host USB printing solution built into the device itself, allowing users to quickly print PDFs on portable USB drives without having to pull them in from the ColorPASS-GX100 controller. With that said, we have no hesitation in awarding the Canon Color imageRUNNER C5180 with ColorPASS-GX100 controller BERTL’s Highly Recommended status.
