Justine Borghello is Director of Operations for a non-profit organization:

Capital City K9 Service Program. The program pairs shelter dogs with

disabled veterans and others; many of whom have PTSD.

She started her presentation with a very impactful short video of a returned

soldier who has typical PTSD symptoms: Vivid flashbacks (the video

includes very realistic war scenes, including the death of a combat buddy),

nightmares, family problems. (Club member who are combat veterans

were forewarned the video might be a trigger.) Finally, he's ready to kill

himself, gun to chin, wife begging him to put it down, terrified young son

outside the closed bedroom door -- when the large stray dog he found in a

park and brought home stands up and licks his face.

It was very powerful and effective as a realistic presentation of PTSD. She

brought her own service dog and indicated she, too, has PTSD. Some of

the program's dog recipients are domestic violence survivors. Some have

been victims of crime.

The organization works with area shelters, including Yolo County’s, to

find dogs to train. Founded four years ago, the organization is proud to say

no veteran who has received one of Capital City K9s dogs has committed

suicide. To date, Capital City K9 has placed 200 dogs -- all of them shelter

dogs or owner surrenders.

Have I Got A Deal For You

Here's the deal – leave California, go to Yola, Nigeria, and become head of the American

University of Nigeria (AUN). To add to the challenge, Yola has 80% unemployment,

75% illiteracy and 47% of its people are stunted due to malnutrition. The goal is to make

AUN a “land grant” university like UC Davis or Penn State to pass on knowledge to

farmers and improve agricultural practices.

Margee Ensign was crazy enough to accept this challenge in 2010. Although she hadn't

worked in Africa, she had studied development issues around the world as dean of the

School of International Studies at the University of the Pacific. When she arrived, she

helped charter the area's first Rotary Club.

Shortly thereafter, the government ended fuel subsidies and the poor population began to

riot. Yola ended up home to 5,000 refugees. Rotary, the university and local Muslim

leaders formed the Adamawa Peace Iniative (API) and worked together to house and

feed the refugees. They helped fund seed purhases for subsistence farms so families

couold pay their childrens' school fees.

Then in 2014, Boku Haram kidnapped 300 schoolgirls and began terrorizing the country-

side. Refugees from all around descended on Yola. By mid-year, there were 20,000 By

September, the number was 200,000. By early 2015, nearly 400,000 refugees – 120% of

Yola's population! – lived on its outskirts.

API – Rotary, the university and local Muslim and Christian leaders – raised money to

buy food and supplies and worked together to ensure that no one starved. Eventually, the

Nigerian army pushed Boku Haram back to the north so refugees could begin to return

home.

API added reconciliation to its mission to help people learn to listen to each others' sto-

ries instead of blaming each other. At first, people were hurt and angry. But in a sym-

bolically important event toward community healing, a bishop and an imam hugged each

other publicly.

There is no simple answer and the hard work continues. Please see the

February 2017 Rotarian for the complete story.

Bill’s Box

Greetings! It has been a busy month. First, I became a grandfather again this past Thursday; a grandson, Thomas Allan Panziera. I was visiting my daughter, Stephanie, and family on Friday. Thank you Mike Campbell for anchoring the meeting. This Friday I will be at the District Conference in Santa Clara. This should be a fun event, but again, I will not be at the meeting. Heine will be the acting President and I understand there is an email out there inviting everyone to attend. Another thank you is deserved. We had two work projects this past weekend, planting trees in West Sacramento and the Clarksburg Park Revitalization. Thank you’s to Christian Montgomery and Mike Campbell for organizing these events. The scholarship presentations are starting to end the year with a giving note. Thank you to the scholarship committee for their effort and to all those supporting the West Sacramento Foundation allowing us to have the money to present to these deserving students. I will be back on May 12th, but remember, our meeting will be a vocational visit to the Culinary School. The students have a wonderful venue and you certainly will enjoy the food.. Rotary Up!, Bill
