April certainly was a very busy month for the FBYC

and the May schedule looks to be just as full.

We started with a great Blessing of the Fleet, fol-

lowed by our General meeting with Hot Diggity Dog,

and finished with a wonderful Commodore’s Ball. I

will leave some of the events for the Fleet Captains

and VC to report on. Great job to all the leads and

volunteers.

Commodore’s Corner — Joe Lindholm - “Continued”

Congratulations to PC Bob and Treasurer Linda Jaeger for putting on a great time at this year’s

Commodore’s Ball. The venue at Oceanside CC in Ormond Beach was very elegant. From the

cocktails to the hors d’ oeuvres to the dinners, all were outstanding!! The Frank Saffi Band was

at its best and the dance floor was a popular spot. Great job Bob and Linda!

The April meeting also held a vote to approve the Board of Directors recommendation to raise the

annual dues from $75 to $100. The recommendation was approved (73 yes to 19 no). Thank you

and congratulations to all that voted. This will insure the success of our club’s events for quite

some time.

Patty and I will miss the May General meeting as we will be in Illinois for our youngest daughter’s

wedding. The meeting will carry a Cinco de Mayo theme. Please plan on attending. If you would

like to contribute and help make the event an even greater success, please call VC John Green.

First I would like to thank every member that voted on the dues in-

crease at our April meeting. No matter what your position was on

the proposal, it was great to see 92 of our members cast their ballot.

The winner and still champion of the FBYC’s hot dog eating contest

was again Rich Franco. Rich admitted to eating five of the wieners

in a bun prepared by Jack Cohen and his crew. Chef John Manoni

did an excellent job of cooking the dogs although he probably cringed at the sight of all that

ketchup being spread on his creations. For those of you who do not remember, John and Lydia

operated a Chicago style hot dog emporium in Flagler Beach for several years. But being a true

Chicago hot dog expert, John does not put the red sauce on his dogs.

Get out your sombreros and wax your mustaches,next month is our Cinco de Mayo

celerbration at the general meeting. We will have some light snacks with a South of the Boarder

slant.

I just thanked Jack Cohen for his work on the hot dog dinner last month and now he

is preparing us for to spend a great night at the “Jack” . It’s a Daytona Tortuga baseball game on

May 14th with Bull Pen privileges including Dustin’s BBQ ribs, sides and beer for only $26.00.

This event is a joint event with the Maritime Committee with some of our boaters staying over in

Daytona following the NSB boat trip. If you plan on attending contact Jack Cohen TODAY at 386

With no general meeting in August, Cindy Franco and Jeanne Meyer are planning a

Disco Dance at the church hall on August 18th. There will be music by Traces of Gold and a ca-

tered dinner. If you are interested you need to sign up early by contacting either Jeanne or Cindy.

Remember, we need you to be involved to make these events a success. If you are asked to assist

on an event, please do whatever you can to help your fellow member.

Heads up, clubmates, we’re coming up fast on annual dues

time. And if you didn’t get the word, we voted at our April meeting to

raise our annual dues to $100. This is the first dues increase in

many years. Operating costs have risen and we have to keep pace.

Good news … we’re still the best and most cost effective little boat

club in all of Flagler. Perhaps we should say in all of Florida.

Anyway, dues are “due” by Thursday, June 30th. Please make

your check out to FBYC and mail to either me or Linda Jaeger. Our

addresses are in the roster on our website. Don’t forget, now. You

don’t want to get left out of our great boating and social activities. Call me ((386) 864-4385) if you

have any questions at all.

For all of you FBYC boaters, be aware that the ICW manatee speed zones kick in on May 1st.

The speeding fines are truly awesome, so be careful out there. I won’t go into where the zones are

here, but you can “Google” the information or contact one of our fleet captains. And especially

check for the posted warning signs. They’re big and bold on the waterway. Please pass on the

word to your fellow boaters.

And speaking of boating, remember that when you fuel up at the PC Marina, ask for your 10

cent/gallon fuel discount. It all adds up.

Finally, a hearty “hats off” and “thumbs up” to Bob and Linda Jaeger for planning and hosting

our 2016 Commodore’s Ball. As always, this is the highlight of our year as we honor our outgoing

officers and welcome our new ones. We thank Bob and Linda for their hard work and creativity in

putting on a great one at the Oceanside Country Club. I know how hard this is having done three.

With April came the annual Blessing Of The Fleet on Saturday the 16th. The blessing was fol-

lowed by a happy hour and lunch at Hidden Treasure restaurant. The forecast for several days

leading up to the event called for an 80% chance of rain. We were prepared to cancel but the

clouds parted and other than a brief shower at Hidden Treasure, it turned out to be a beautiful

day.

Sixteen FBYC vessels were blessed by Pastor Chris Magnell at the Green’s dock on the Intra-

coastal Waterway. Mike Triano organized the lineup of the boats.

Some came to Hidden Treasure by boat, many by car but it was a good time for all. Toni and Bob

Mincin had the lead for today’s event and were assisted by Pam and Ken Miller. Thanks to all in-

volved for a well planned day.

The following is a list of Maritime events we have planned for the next three months. Please mark

your calendars for these and sign up at the meetings for any you would like to attend.

May 13-15: There will be a two night trip to Halifax Marina in Daytona Beach. The Marina is lo-

cated near a S. Beach Street which is a revitalized older section of Daytona. There will also be a

lunch a Boondock’s restaurant in Wilbur-By-The-Sea for boaters and non boaters. There are

shops and restaurants within walking distance of Halifax Marina. Best of all the Marina is also

near the Daytona Baseball Stadium where the Tortuga’s play. The social committee is planning

baseball game event on the 14th. Kate and Chris Nelson have the lead on the maritime portion

of the event.

June 10: The annual Steak Bake will be held at Mantanzas Inlet. Marty Willson has the lead

with assistance from Mike Triano and Alan Hendry. There was a planning meeting held in April

to develop a plan and get volunteers in place for the various needs of this event. The event will

start at noon and two pontoon boat captains will ferry non-boaters from the parking area on the

west side of A1A at Mantanzas Inlet to the event. All volunteers should arrive at Mantanzas at

11:00 and others between 11:30 and 12:00. Cost for members will be $5.00 and $10.00 for non-

members. Mike Triano is collecting payment for this event.

July 10-13: There will be a three night trip to Loggerhead Marina in Daytona Beach with a lunch

at Caribbean Jack’s Restaurant on the 11th. More information will be included in next month’s

newsletter.

2014 Boating Accidents & How You Can Reduce Your Risk Of Having An Accident

Nobody wants to have a boating accident, here are my thoughts on how not to be a boating ac-

cident statistic, this is based on the U.S. Coast Guard’s study of 4,064 accidents in and com-

piled their 2014 Recreational Boating Statistics. The steps to reduce your chances of having a

boating accident are simple, have a sober driver, take a Boating Safety Class, pay attention to

what is happening in and around the boat and a few more simple steps.

On the good side, recreation boating is a relatively safe activity with the accident rate remain-

ing low for the last few years with some ups and downs. One thing that jumped out was that

in 77% of the deaths, the boat operator had no boating safety instruction.

There is no reason I can think of not to take a boating safety class of some sort. The Coast

Guard Auxiliary and the Power Squadron offer classes and some Sheriffs Departments and Po-

lice also offer boating safety classes.

I am often asked about taking a class in a classroom or over the internet which is best or what

should someone do? I always recommend taking a class in a classroom. My theory is that the

person next to you might ask that question you are afraid to ask, or something the instructor

or another student says will trigger a new question about something you might have done or

seen happen on the water.

Where the cause of death was known, 78% of the deaths were due to drowning. Of the drown-

ing deaths, 84% were not wearing a Life Jacket.

Wearing a Life Jacket is a simple thing to do. There is now a wide choice of life Jackets avail-

able, and with proper care they will last for many seasons. Remember to inspect them at least

once a year to make sure they are in good usable condition, also keeping them clean will help

prolong their life.

Alcohol Use (#1 for Deaths, #5 for Accidents). Alcohol can kill, no two ways about it. The

maximum Blood Alcohol level on the water is the same as on the highway 0.08%. However a

big caution here, environmental factors on a boat can act as a multiplier causing you to be im-

paired at a lower level than say sitting at home in the back yard. Some environmental issues

are fatigue from the constant motion of the boat and many times people spend a long time on

the boat. Dehydration from the heat and sun, causes the alcohol to go into the system faster

than people are used to. Noise and vibration can also add to the effects of alcohol and make

you less alert.

Operator Inexperience (#2 for Deaths, #3 for Accidents). People new to boating are most at

risk, just like on the highway. Get some experience, go boating with experienced safe boaters,

take a class that has on the water as part of the curriculum, invite a friend to come along with

you that is an experienced boater, I know many people that have done this, amazing what the

offer of a bit of food and drink after you get back to the slip will do to get people to ride along

with you. Also be aware of your inexperience and maybe don’t try some of the things you have

seen others do, discretion goes a long ways toward safety.

Operator Inattention (#3 for Deaths, #1 for Accidents). OK, pay attention to the operation of

the boat and what is going on and not so much talking or whatever to someone on the boat or

adjusting the music machine, talking on the cell phone or taking pictures while you are the

one that is operating the boat.

Improper Lookout (#4 for Deaths, #2 for Accidents). A lookout is required when you are un-

derway (not at anchor,or made fast to the shore, or aground). LOOK OUTSIDE THE BOAT,

pay attention to everything around the boat. When you are a passenger on a boat act as a

lookout even if you are not asked to. Point out to the driver things you see that might be an

issue (other boats, trash in the water, Aids to Navigation or buoys, etc). If you are driving and

someone points out something you have been tracking for some time, please just say “thanks I

have it”, DON’T yell at the person for the multiple notifications, the person will soon figure out

that you are a jerk and keep quiet until you hit something or have an accident.



Excessive Speed (#5 for Deaths, #4 for Accidents). Going to fast in a boat, can have many bad

side effects. Hitting a wave and launching the boat into the air causing occupants to be

thrown out of the boat or banged around in the boat. More difficult to see junk in the water,

swimmers or small boats such as kayaks.

Some boats ride bow high and block the forward vision of the driver. I also see boats operating

at high speed close to other boats or speeding in congested areas.

Slow down at night, turn on your navigation lights, protect your night vision, post extra look-

outs, not all boats remember to turn on their lights at sunset and not all lights work.

Navigation Rules Violation (#6 for Deaths, #6 for Accidents). Everyone should read the Nav.

Rules (COLREGS) at least once in their boating career. Boating Safety classes usually hit the

Rules of the Road fairly hard. Boaters should know the common rules such as crossing situa-

tions and the which boat is stand on and which is give way. Prudent boaters will slow down

when it doubt, or maneuver so the risk of a collision does not exist.

Recreational boating is generally a very fun and safe sport, but it only takes a moment for

something to go wrong. Remember that all accidents are a chain of events (an auto rear ends

another car, traveling too fast, road is slick from the rain, talking on the cell phone, not watch-

ing traffic, etc. – break any one of those events and you might only be scared but no accident),

so stay alert and be on your guard at all times.
