The weather has been better than our usual June and everybody is really into boating this season. Seattitude is heading up to Desolation Sound for the first two weeks in August (leaving on 7/30/04). We will be wandering around Desolation to in- clude WilderNest up near Toba Inlet. We will be returning on the weekend of the 15 th of August with approximately the same return path with the exception of Bedwell, of course (probably Roche Har- bor on the return). We will have our radios on and anticipate running into and running with lots of fun Puget Sound Yacht Club people. Your Board is finalizing the five (5) year plan to begin the budget and finance planning for 2005 and beyond. The re- sults of this effort have been revealing and substantial. We have been doing some spreadsheet analysis of the changes during the last month. In actuality, the dues increases this year have had a num- ber of members evaluate their participa- tion in the Club and membership is down somewhat. However, the 5 year plan has made some assessments about what we should be doing. In summary, based on membership recommendations, we are shooting for the 250-300 members target. That means that we stay in our present facility for the next five years and main- tain it with the possibility of a remodel if we pursue the legal recourse of getting a variance in some of the existing statutes. The facilities work is ongoing with the projected need for a painting and the dock repair completion. The finances, with the loan we are pursuing and infla- tionary increases in dues and dock, will support this plan for the next five years. Just a reminder that in August there is no Sound Waves, there is no Board meeting and there is no general meeting. We are far too busy having fun on the water to have meetings in August. Have a great time in your boats this Summer! Remember that when you head out on the water, send out that email to the Club to let everybody know where you are going. Just send an email (or tell your email friends to send an email) to [email protected] with your dates and destinations. Have a great and safe June on the water. What a great boating season so far. The weather has been better than our usual June and everybody is really into boating this season. Seattitude is heading up to Desolation Sound for the first two weeks in August (leaving on 7/30/04). We will be wandering around Desolation to in-clude WilderNest up near Toba Inlet. Vice Commodore’s Report Pat Hansen

It is now that time of year when all of the “formal stuff” at the Yacht Club is winding down and we are thinking about summer on the water. Since this is the last Sound Waves until September – I want to bring you up to date on things that have been ac-complished and things that are “in the works”.

Clubhouse Maintenance First of all the new roof is on and the new walkway and porch are completed. Everett Bode led this project with help from Rich Mellinger, Tom Lay-born, Wil Kerns, Kevin Carlson, Bill Dils, Don Sny-der, Dick Paine, Bill Correll, Traci Bode, and Brenden and Jenel Bode. We owe them all a BIG THANK YOU for undertaking this long, overdue project and making this happen. Kudos’ to all of you. Now it can rain all it wants – and we will have a dry clubhouse.

Businesses Supporting PSYC Next, as a way to say Thank You to the businesses in the area that support PSYC with their advertis-ing dollars, I will be contacting all of our roster advertisers offering them the member rental price ($75.00) for their business meetings – and ½ off ($225.00) for company parties. This may also be an inducement to prospective advertisers if they should ask, “Why should I advertise with PSYC?” The savings on the rental price alone will more than pay for their advertising fee. This is a win-win situation.

Opening Day Float - 2005 At the June General Meeting it was decided that we

July 2004 — Page 2

should bring back the spirit of Opening Day and build a float. 28 people (I think) raised their hands confirming that they would be willing to help. If you remember the old days – when we used to en-ter floats - Olivia Noiseux always stepped up and led the project. Olivia, who now lives in Ari-zona, was at the June meeting and when asked if she would be willing to come back to help again – we got an affirmative answer – along with a big smile. It will be nice to work along side Olivia again. I will work with Seattle Yacht Club – and will contact the other yacht clubs for their support in this. PSYC will lead the way and I will keep you posted.

Dock Repair Plans The dock repair is scheduled for the fall when the lake goes down. Chuck – from Waterfront Construction, and John Dunato have met to discuss the situation – specifically the ecology block.

“Power Squadron” Last, but not least - Seattle Sail and Power Squad-ron will be holding their Basic Boating Class at PSYC. Classes will be held from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm starting Tuesday September 7th – with gradua-tion on Tuesday October 19th. The Basic Class is free, with a nominal charge for class material ($40.00 per book, an extra $10.00 to share a book - so it would be $50.00 for materials for a couple to take the class). To register, call 206-789-1128 or email [email protected]. Happy and Safe Boating.

Must be interesting Doug!

Boating season is in full swing the cruises have been great! PSYC is a great cruising and social club I hope everyone comes and enjoys the ac-tivities as much as Marcia and I do. The next social is the August 28th. Family Pic-nic at Mission Beach. Hope to see you there and bring a family member you want your friends at the Club to meet and join in on the fun with you. There will be games and good Salmon to eat. See the flier in the Sound waves. At our July meeting we have some business to handle that happened at the cruise to Poulsbo. It seems a couple of pets went swimming off boats, one dog and one cat. Kevin Carlson is busy collecting facts and will present them to the Club, and Deny and Gail King as well as Marty and Judy Martinson will have their chance to tell their side of the story oops case. As always it will be a fair trial. We may have some flags that need to be changed. At the up coming meetings we will have the Sales Manager from Meridian Yachts telling us about the changes at U S Boats and a talk on the best way to make sure your boat is protected from galvanic corrosion. See you all at the July potluck general meeting. Safe Boating!

PASSINGS………..

SLY KLUGER Sy Kluger passed away on June 24, 2004. Sy was Commodore in 1972. By all appearances, Sy was respected and loved by all who knew him. He had a great spirit of positive attitude about everything and reflected that in his leader-ship of the Club. We got the word that he had passed while we were on the Poulsbo cruise and so we spent time at the cruise talking about the man and telling stories about boating with him. He truly had a passion for boating and passed that on to his sons. Both Ray and Ron have boats and have carried on the tradition of love of family boating. PSYC was well repre-sented at Sy's funeral and his contribution to the Club was acknowledged at those ser-vices. Please keep Harriet and Ray in your thoughts and prayers. He will be sorely missed by all. Richard H. Paine

For those of you who were not able to attend the last PSYC meeting: Bill Allen's mother (and Jim Barrett's aunt) passed away June 8, 2004 just ten days short of her 94th birthday. "Cecille L. Barrett Allen leaves a son, Bill Allen and wife Peggy of Belle-vue, daughter, Marjorie Thompson and husband Tom of Wenatchee, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and nieces and neph-ews. Cecille was loved and cherished by her family and we will all miss her fun-loving person-ality." Remembrances may be sent to the Arthri-tis Foundation, 3876 Bridge Way N., #300, Seat-tle, WA 98103.

The Cruising Season is in full swing and the weather is really heating up! It’s time to unfurl the burgee and do some cruising. Let’s get out on the water!

We won’t have a Sound Waves or a Members Meeting in August so if you’re planning on attending any of the cruises noted below please contact your cruise captains now. I know they would all appreciate as much advance notice as possible to help them put together the best cruise ever. June 11th—13th Bell Harbor Mariners Cruise Once again the Mariners cruise was a huge success. The weather cooperated – just enough – and the Mariners came through with a rare win. Nearly 40 folks enjoyed a great dinner on Friday and a special breakfast on the dock Satur-day morning. Along the way we had just enough time left over for a little friendly competition. Ron Bell is the all time Mariner’s trivia king, Jodie Paine severely overachieved with a word scramble and Marsha Ellingson picked the final score to walk home with a $100 prize. Mike & Lisa Haistings, Larry & Barb Knutsen and my fist mate Donna deserve a ton of credit for all their hard work. It was a wonderful weekend for everyone who was able to attend. June 25th – 27th Poulsbo As of this writing we’re 2 days a way from what might be the biggest cruise of the year. It’s re-ported that more than 80 folks will show for the cruise to Poulsbo. I can’t wait to recount the de-tails in the next Sound Waves. July 9th—11th Progressive Puget Sound Cruise Practice your anchoring skills, go fly a kite, or just settle back and relax. They’ll be something of interest for everyone on this “regressive” cruise around Bainbridge Island. We’ll be heading back in time to the fabulous 50’s for this one so pack your poodle skirts and bobby socks as we take a stroll down memory lane. You know Bill, Peggy, Jim and Linda will have a few surprises up their sleeve. Contact any of them if you plan to attend. July 23rd—25th Vacation Connection The second annual vacation connection in LaConnor promises to be another must attend event. Your cruise commit-tee (Joanne Knutson, Duehnings, Daileys, Boyds and LaMarches) are pulling out all the stops to kick-off the vacation season in PSYC fashion. Come by boat, RV or car, either way you’ll have a great time touring the Pacific Mariner Com-pany, enjoying a dinghy parade and a picnic at Rainbow Park. If you’ve planning to attend CONTACT JOANNE BY JULY 18TH. August 13th—15th San Juan Islands Not ready to return to the mainland? We have a new twist in August as an anchor out on Lopez Island is being hosted by Les and Donna Alluisi. Join the group for some “princess coffee” and some relaxing island time. August 20th—22nd Andrew’s Bay Chris is planning another great anchor out and BBQ on Lake Washington so pack your swimsuit and sunscreen and pre-pare to enjoy some fun on the water. Tom Layborn has offered to share his jet ski so bring along a donation of gas and you’ll be in line to do new form of wake jumping. Connect with Chris if you plan to hang out with the group. September 3rd—6th Pleasant Harbor The reservation office is open and the line if forming for one of the hottest destinations of the season. We won’t be returning to Pleasant Harbor next season so don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the last “unofficial” weekend of summer at one of the most relaxing marinas in Puget Sound. You can contact your Fleet Captain in all the usual ways if you’re planning to attend. September 17th—19th Hat Island Fishing Derby We’ve all heard from the expert, now it’s time to put our new found insight to use. Plan to rise before the sun and fish until you drop for that coveted title of PSYC Champion Angler. John Orr and company plan to put on a traditional hamburger feed on Saturday night to help us forget the “one that got away”. Don’t miss what promises to be a highlight of our year. Hook up with John if you haven’t al-ready reserved your space on the dock.
