The Kingston Railway Station was built along the Jamaica/Georgian lines of architecture. It was constructed on a grand scale, symbolizing the economic importance of the city of Kingston as the centre of trade. The station is constructed of brick with prominent arcades on both levels of the east entrance end. Victorian cast iron brackets support the roof overhang on the trackside. The building has sash windows on the ground and upper floors. The Kingston Railway Station was constructed in 1845.

This facility has a one time costand will serve as the assembly facility for all

6 phases of the Jamaican HyRail Projectand will also serve as a

“Rail, Air & Sea Freight Distribution Hub”after build out is complete.

Phase 1 / Kingston to Portmore / Including Staging & Assembly Facility / 7.2 mi / 11.65 km

Gregory Park railway station opened in 1845 and closed in 1992. It served the Gregory Park sugar estate on the Kingston to Montego Bay line, 6.5 miles (10.5 km) from the Kingston terminus. It was destroyed by fire sometime after closure.

Including Freight, Staging and Assembly Facility – One Time Cost for Entire System Build Out

Phase 1 / 4,176 New Jobs Created;Infrastructure investment spending will create about 18,000 total jobs for every $1 billion in new investment spending, including direct, indirect, and induced jobs.1,000,000,000 / $ 232,294,887 (Cost Phase 1) = 23.2% x 18,000) = 4,176 jobs

Phase 1 / Energy Production;HyRail creates one megawatt of power per mile per solar hour. Based on an 8 hour day average exposure.

Phase 1 would create 7.2mw X 8hrs = 57.6 mw – 33% (or 19.008 mw for system operations) = 38.6 mw of electrical energy available per day @ .10cents per/kw hr = $3860. per day or $1,408,608. additional Annual Revenue.

The ROI is longer for Phase 1 in the beginning because of the additional “one time cost” for the freight, staging & assembly facility. This length of time, for the return on investment in Phase 1, is greatly reduced as other phases of the project come on line that will utilize the same facility for the entire build out. Revenues from Freight & Utilities Systems are not included in this ROI analysis.

Railway transportation forms the second tier of land transportation in Jamaica, and it was one of the earliest modes of transportation to be introduced in Jamaica, dating back to the 1880s.Public railway tracks belonging to the Jamaica Railway Corporation (JRC) span three hundred thirty five kilometers (335km) across the island, traversing nine (9) of the fourteen (14) parishes of Jamaican. These are Clarendon, Kingston, Manchester, Portland, St. Ann, St. Catherine, St. Elizabeth, St. James ad St. Mary, where there are over forty (40) stations.

Since the closure of the public passenger and freight transport services of the Jamaica Railway Corporation (JRC) in 1992, passenger rail transport has remained dormant and railway operations in Jamaica are currently limited to the activities of bauxite companies in the island. There are efforts underway to amend the Jamaican Railway Corporation Act, 1960 to make adequate provision for the privatization of railway operations

A number of entities have expressed an interest in revitalizing the railway but, to date, public passenger and freight services have not been restored. In 2005 the government entered into agreement with a Chinese government company to undertake studies on the feasibility of rehabilitation of the railway service in Jamaica. Significantly, the reopening of Jamaica’s public railway transport operations could serve to alleviate the problem of congestion, especially within the KMTR (Kingston Metropolitan Transit Region)

Vernam Field was established in November 1941 to house a bomber squadron. The field had three runways: a 6000-foot concrete runway and two shorter asphalt runways. When officially activated on 21 November 1941, the station was assigned to Sixth Air Force. The primary mission of Vernam Field was antisubmarine patrols in the Northern Caribbean.

In 1945, Vernam Field became the destination for many B-29 Super-fortress aircraft from Second Air Force training flights originating in Kansas and Nebraska. The B-29s would land at the airfield, be refueled and have turnaround maintenance performed if necessary before returning to the Midwest. It was, unfortunately, also the site of several B-29 crashes.

With the end of the war, Vernam Field was reduced in scope to a skeleton staff. By the end of 1946 only two aircraft, a C-45 and a C-47 were assigned to the station with both aircraft being down for parts and minimal maintenance being undertaken. The airfield became a training destination for early jet aircraft cross country flights.

The airfield was re-designated Vernam Air Force Base on March 26, 1948, by Department of the Air Force General Order Number 10. The mission of the base was primarily weather reporting, with a detachment of the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) 6th Weather Squadron being the primary unit on the base. It also became a destination for long-range Strategic Air Command fighter escort aircraft, with F-82 Twin Mustangs flying to Vernam from Kearney AFB, Nebraska then returning on cross-country training flights.

Vernam AFB closed on 28 May 1949 due to budgetary cutbacks. Following closure, the base was essentially abandoned and all structures were removed or torn down. The facility has been derelict for decades. The only use of the former airfield area has been as an automobile racetrack known as Vernamfield which uses some of the old runways and taxiways.

In the early 21st century, the Government of Jamaica announced plans to reactivate the site as an international Airport. The experience of disruptions in traffic at Norman Manley International Airport after hurricanes suggest that it would be wise to have a third International Airport in Jamaica.

Base Estimates on Aluminum Production

37

A standard mile of rail should produce an estimated watts/ hour during peak solar exposure

5280ft*16ft=84,480sqft * 20watts = 1,689,600 watts/hour/mile or ~ 1.7 Megawatts/hour/mile

About 6.2 KwH (kilowatt hours) of electricity is required to produce one pound of aluminum from alumina. (source: http://www.rocksandminerals.com/aluminum/process.htm )

If 100% Power from Rail is dedicated to production of Aluminum from Alumina the following estimated projected figures may apply:

1,700 Kilowatts/hour/mile at 6.2KwH / lb of Al = 274.1 lbs/hour.

If we consider the energy production of a 100 mile system to be 170 Megawatts/hour. We can then consider the dedication of 10% of the energy to Bauxite production for a total of 17 Megawatts/hour. Further, if we consider a maximum solar day of eight hours, then there is a maximum of 136 Megawatts / Day available for production of Aluminum.

Therefore we can consider the following equation for daily production capacity of Aluminum: 136,000 KwH / 6.2 KwH = 21,935 Lbs of Aluminum / day. Current commodity prices for Aluminum is about $1.00USD/Lb, therefore the daily Aluminum production rate estimated above equates to $21,935.00 / Day * 365 = $8,006,265.00 / year
