Spring Term 1 - February 2018

Marriotts News Aim high. Work hard. Be kind.

In partnership with

Dear Parents/Carers and students

We have had a very busy and successful half term. Students are applying themselves well in lessons and their approach to learning continues to improve. We are particularly proud of our examination classes who are working extremely hard in the run up to their GCSEs. As ever there is much to celebrate at Marriotts as you will see throughout this Newsletter.

I would like to wish all of our students a restful, enjoyable and safe half term. Keeping Children Safe is the responsibility of us all. As a school, we take our safeguarding responsibilities very seriously. We are aware that some of our students don’t always consider their safety and well-being when in the community. Here are some reminders that we hope all parents/carer’s will find useful.

It might seem like a scary list, but your guidance can help your child keep themselves safe. This will also help build their self-confidence and independence at the same time.

Staying safe on Line

It is always worth discussing how to stay safe on line with your child. It may be useful to visit this link to remind you of some of the dangers

Be aware of the risks Some questions to consider when

they are going out

It's a good idea to be aware of the risks that children out alone might face and how to minimise them. Risks could include:

Danger from traffic

Bullying from other children

Stranger danger

Grooming

Running into gangs

Exposure to alcohol or drugs

Where and when do they want to go? What do they want to do there? Who's going to be with them? How far away are they going? What time will they be back? How can I reach them?

Last month 10 Year 8 students attended a Languages workshop day at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge with Mrs Jones, where they learnt about the importance of studying one or more foreign languages including facts about the number of people in the world who speak no English, evidence from neuroscientists who have discovered the beneficial effects that bilingualism or multilingualism have on the brain and improved employability. Our students participated in workshops led by teaching staff at the University of Cambridge relating to the language that they are studying at Marriotts, and then they were able to participate in taster sessions in some new languages including Japanese, Russian and Arabic where they learnt to understand, speak and write some basic phrases. They also spent time with some Cambridge undergraduates from the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages who explained about the variety of experiences they are enjoying studying one or more languages at university, how you can spend your year

abroad and what day to day university life is like including where they live and the numerous social and sporting activities that are available, and how the colleges of the University are very competitive and similar to the house system in schools. The students will be leading an assembly about what they have learnt.

Winners of the Wheelchair Hub Table Top Cricket

We would like to congratulate Faye (10H) and Abigail (9C)

on winning the Wheelchair Hub Table Top Cricket event

held at Lonsdale School.

Abigail and Faye have been attending the Wheelchair Hub Table Top Cricket Club every Thursday since Christmas. This event has been led by Andy from Herts Disability Cricket. Andy has been coaching the children each week in the rules and tactics of the game. Earlier this week the girls joined their Lonsdale team mates to play against 3 other teams in the County

tournament. They played exceptionally well winning their games and finishing top of the leader board! They will now go onto the Regional finals in May where they will represent Hertfordshire.

Following our fantastic win at Rock Challenge last year, on Wednesday evening , even though we were showcasing and not competing we still had the chance to win ‘Premier Awards of Excellence’ for scoring 8 or more out of 10 in the categories. As a team, we won every single award that you get judged on! 12 in total! Number 13 was ‘Spirit of Rock Challenge’, which we have now won two years in a row. The other

schools have to vote for the most supportive, friendly and encouraging school of the day to win this. An amazing achievement by all - so proud of all the performers, stage crew, hair and make up, parents and teachers who continue to ‘Aim High, Work Hard and Be Kind’ for Performing Arts at Marriotts.

Mrs Bond

Rock Challenge

Once again there have been a number of trips, events and sporting activities taking place this half term. We would like to congratulate the following.

Boys' Senior Football Team

Congratulations to the Boys' Senior Football Team who in their first game of 2018 did us proud with a fantastic 5-0 win away at The Priory School. Through poor conditions the team worked hard and played some lovely football. We are very proud of the way they played and the way they conducted themselves.

Well done to: Marcus, Alfie, Lewis, Jayden, Connor, Sam, Evan, Jack, Louis, Harry and Tommy, with goals being scored by: Marshall who scored 3 times and one each for Paul and Sanna

Year 9 Boys' Football Team

Congratulations to the school's Year 9 Boys' Football Team on their excellent 10-0 win against Thomas Alleyne last night. Man of the match goes to Conor who scored 5 goals

Alfie, Joe, Charlie, Jack, Leo, Andi (C), Conor, Eddie, Alex, Jamie, Jay, Alessio, Marcel

Girls U13 Football Team

Congratulations and well done to the Girls’ Football team who beat Thomas Alleyne Academy 6-1. A fantastic performance from: Ella, Millie, Joely, Phoebe, Anna, Katie, Kiana, Leonie, Rebecca and Kayla.

Boys’ Football Team defends District Champions

Trophy

Two recent football fixtures have enabled the Boys’ Football team to continue their journey to defend the District Champions Trophy. The boys’ won their last 2 matches 4-1 against Barclay and 2-0 against John Henry Newman. Congratulations goes to: Piotr, Corey, Lewis, Jack, Alex, Tom, Sam, Timmy, Aaron, Harry, Emmanuel, Harrison, Ross, Daniel, Yas, Hye, james and Ellis. Amazing football, keep it up!

County Swimming achievement

We would like to congratulate Daisy who, following the last 3 weekends of County Championships, has obtained a credible 3

rd place in County for her age group. This triumph

was based on Daisy achieving the following awards: 8 Top 8 finishes, a Bronze in the 200m Butterfly and a Silver in the 400m Individual Medley.

Due to Daisy receiving an award at the County Presentation Evening on Thursday 8th February, she is unable to swim in the Secondary School Gala. Although Daisy has had to withdraw from this event I am sure you would like to join me in congratulating Daisy for her achievement at being in the top 3 in the County. Many congratulations Daisy this is an amazing achievement.

Trips, Events and Sporting Activities

“.. Congratulations and well done to all

of our students in their fantastic achievements.

Aim High, Work Hard, Be Kind.”

“… I am sure you would like to join me in

congratulating Daisy for her

achievement at being in the top 3 in the

County.”

“The students represented the school in the most fantastic way and really were a credit to Marriotts.”

Hertfordshire SACRE Holocaust Memorial Day Service8

A number of Year 10 students attended the annual Hertfordshire SACRE Holocaust Memorial Day Service at Dame Alice Owens School in Potters Bar. The service is held each year, not only to commemorate the victims and survivors of the Holocaust but also those of the numerous other genocides that have taken place, and still are taking place, the world over. The students had the privilege of listening to the testimony of Zigi Shipper, a Polish Jew who entered Auschwitz at the aged of 10 and was liberated by the British at the age of 14. The testimonies of Holocaust survivors are disappearing from living memory and it was an honour to listen to the horrific conditions Zigi had to live through, but also the heartwarming ending where he moved to England and started his family.

The students: Demi, Afshan, Abbie, Naima, Mya, Ellis, Jake and Daniel, represented the school in the most fantastic way and really were a credit to Marriotts.

Humanutopia

Student Voice / Student Council

On the 9th January Humanutopia visited to work with Year 7

and our Year 9 Heroes. This session focused on appreciating life and not taking for granted people, valuables, school, time, etc. All students involved did themselves proud and represented Marriotts to the highest standard.

“Humanutopia is a way for people to communicate and know that they have people to talk to when feeling down. It helps boosts your confidence and gives you the opportunity to express yourself.” Kaci – Moulton (Yr 9 Hero)

Last term, the Student Council rose that they would like to know their ATL score sooner within the module. We have now introduced ATL mid-point checks to help students progress and have the opportunity to improve their ATL score within a module. During this current module the Student Voice has been focusing on ways to reduce litter around our school community.

Seven of our year 8 students competed at the day long Robot Rumble Grand Final last month. After a slow start in the first three qualifying games the robot, which the team has been working on since November, performed flawlessly and was one of the few robots in the challenge that could score by stacking cones on goals. In each match we were allied with another school and so despite our team’s excellent performance in the last few matches, Marriotts finished the first stage of the competition some way down the league table. Marriotts was knocked out of the competition in the first of the knockout games losing to an alliance of the two teams at the top of the league that went on to be the overall winners. The combined results from all of the events during this competition put Marriotts tenth out of sixteen teams.

Despite the disappointment of an early exit from the competition, the students worked well together and demonstrated some excellent effort and teamwork and the experience gained this year should definitely lead to positive outcomes in next year’s competition.

Attendance

At Marriotts School, our staff are committed to ensuring that all families understand the importance of 100% attendance. Attendance in School is vital for academic success. Extensive studies have shown that students who attend less than 95% of the time, fail to achieve 5 high grades at GCSE and therefore limit the chance of a successful, fulfilling life and opportunities and choices available to them are reduced. Absence from School creates gaps in learning which can cause issues on return to School or when revising for vital assessments and exams. For these reasons, we monitor attendance patterns with vigilance and hold parents to account where necessary. We expect all students to attend at all times, even if they are feeling unwell. We do not authorise term time holidays. Safeguarding our Students: Legislation directs that our School is legally required to complete two registers per day. If it is brought to the attention of the attendance team at any point in the School day that a student is not in the School building without identified reason, parents/carers will be notified immediately. Absence Procedures In order to ensure the safety and educational well-being of all students, we have a rigorous monitoring system and follow up policy when absence occurs. Internal Stages

On the first day of absence, the School must be notified of the reason for the absence. If we are satisfied with the reason, we will authorise the absence. If we are not satisfied, the absence will not be authorised.

A text message is sent home to parents/carers if a valid reason is not supplied for absence at approximately 9.30am. Parents/carers are expected to reply to this text if they have not already informed the School of the reason for the absence. Attendance phone-calls are made during the School day for any instances where there has been no contact/reason provided.

Parents/carers are expected to keep the School regularly informed in such cases where absence periods exceed more than 1 day.

Medical evidence is required for any absence which exceeds 3 days. The Head of Conduct and Attendance will review any absence which exceeds 3 days where medical evidence cannot be provided. In this case the first three days of absence will be authorised and a case by case decision will be made regarding the authorisation of the fourth day of absence.

When a student’s attendance falls below 95% (regardless of whether absences have been authorised or not), we will issue a 1

st warning letter, highlighting the student’s absence is falling and advising the family that continued

absence may result in prosecution.

When a student’s attendance continues to fall, a second warning letter will be issued, highlighting need for medical evidence supporting further periods of absence. Continual monitoring will take place. Once a student’s absence drops below 90%, they are described as a ‘Persistent Absentee’.

Hertfordshire County Council offer support to students and their families when attendance to School becomes problematic. The County Attendance Team may identify a caseload of students to work intensively with to support good School attendance. You will be advised by the School if this process is agreed.

Should a student’s absence persist, a third warning letter (Fixed Penalty Notice) letter will be issued: this is not a fine. A Fixed Penalty Notice may be served if 15 sessions of unauthorised absence are reached over a two term period. Following this 3

rd letter, no further written warning will be issued before a fine is applied for with County.

Marriotts School has adopted Hertfordshire County Council’s procedures for monitoring and reporting students who we believe are vulnerable and/or missing from education (CME).

“..as a matter of policy Marriotts School will not authorise leave of absence for holidays in term time..”

Why is Attendance

so Important?

Statistics show a direct link between under-

achievement and poor attendance.

Students with regular attendance make better

progress, both academically and socially.

Students can make lots of new friends and

develop confidence and self-esteem.

Students with regular attendance find school

routines and school work easier to cope with.

Students with regular attendance have an easier

transition to their chosen career path, whether it

be Sixth Form, College or employment.

“We encourage you to arrange routine appointments out of school hours or during school holidays.”

“..as a matter of policy Marriotts School will not authorise leave of absence for holidays in term time..”

Attendance

Many thanks for all your hard work on attendance. In recent weeks we have held some very useful and productive attendance sessions with Form Tutors and SLT. All the processes we now have in place are working. Attendance is obviously an area that requires constant work and focus, we remain confident that if we continue to work together as a team we will see the benefits across the school in further increased attendance and attainment

levels. I know that if we continue to work together we will soon reach our target of 95% attendance across the school.

Attendance

We would like to congratulate the following students who have achieved 100% attendance from 1st September to 2nd February 2018.

If we have emergencies that prevent the school from opening, e.g. snow and bad weather, please listen for announcements on BOB FM - http://www.bobfm.co.uk/, Herts Direct - www.hertsdirect.org , the Online School Closure System at https://www.imodus.com/summary.aspx?company=99 and on the school website.

Please note that although we will update the website as soon as we are able, our primary method of communication will be by text to the number identified as the primary parent/carer for each of the students in the school.

As a result of this, it is essential that we have your up to date mobile phone number. If you are unsure whether or not you have notified us of your mobile number, please send a note to the school with your contact details and a request for your number to be checked on the system.

Please discuss with your child what you would want them to do in the event of any sudden closure during the day, i.e. should they go to a designated friend’s house. This is especially important for students who do not live locally.

School Comms

Marriotts uses the electronic communication system Schoolcomms. In order for you to receive the maximum possible use from this system we require a valid email address and mobile telephone number for the Priority 1 contact. Please can you ensure we have up-to-date information on your child.

You can download the App from Schoolcomms (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/school-gateway/id596039615?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4)

We currently have 766 parents registered on the Gateway, that’s over 73%. So far we have 650 parents using the App, allowing the school to communicate free of charge.

Please look on the Schoolcomms website, http://schoolcomms.com/parent-login/parents for more information. The School Gateway App will show you your child’s attendance and allow you to notify the school of any unauthorised absence.

The application will also allow you to view your child’s timetable showing what lessons they have, achievement points received any medical details previously advised to the school. You are able to message back from the App with any changes to your own or your child’s details, for example, update on mobile number or change of address.

Schoolcomms is monitored throughout the day by the Admin staff and any messages received will be responded to the same day.

If you experience any problems either with the App or Schoolgateway, please do not hesitate to contact the school office or Mrs Goff on [email protected] who can help to resolve any issues.

Contact Details

In case of an emergency it is imperative

that we hold a valid telephone number and email address for the main contacts we have on our system for your child. If you have recently changed your mobile or home telephone numbers or email address please notify the school office so we can update our system.

If you want to access an existing School Gateway account or create a new one, this requires your email and mobile number to set up; if we do not have the same details on our system it will not allow you to access your account or create one, thus telling you we have out of date information.
