WHAT IS FAIRTRADE?

FAIRTRADE means giving everyone a fair pay and a fair chance to start their businesses worldwide and earn fair profit. It treats everyone fairly with respect allowing them to sustain their families and stop them from starvation.

OVERALL IT MEANS BEING FAIR

COCOA PRODUCTION

Chocolate has to get through many long stages to actually become “Chocolate”. Chocolate is made from Cocoa beans which are grown in places in Africa like Ghana and Nigeria. The most popular producer is Ivory Coast which produces millions of Tonnes every year. After the Cocoa pods are picked they are opened with sharp machetes and the beans are taken out. They are separated and dried, and then they are tested by the owner to check the quality ( to make sure they are not rotten ). They are then packed in sacks and shipped or flown overseas to demanding countries and their chocolate companies like Cadburys.

FAIRTRADE CHOCOLATE VS MULTINATIONAL CHOCOLATE COMPANIES

We tried to different types of chocolate Galaxy and co-op fair trade chocolate. We looked at the packaging, taste, smell, cost and texture. When we looked at the price of the non fairtrade chocolate the price was double than the fairtrade. People said that the taste of the non fairtrade was better and that they would pay extra for it.

CHILD LABOUR AND COCOA PRODUCTON-

Child labour is when farmers buy young children, from parents who cant afford to keep them and sell their children, and use them to work on their plantations. These “Child Workers” handle loads of lethal equipment such as:-They work 10-12 hour shifts using lethal weapons such as machetes which cause risks such as severe cuts and maybe even death. They use these to cut down cocoa pods and later split them open to retrieve the cocoa beans inside.-Pesticides are another thing that they use. These are used to cover the pod trees and stop pests from damaging the crops and therefor ruining the harvest.

FOOD MILES-

Food has to travel a very long distance to get to our plates, it doesn’t just magically appear in your local supermarket and then you buy it. To reach our plates food has to travel from various countries by either plane or boat, the most preferred one is boat. The reason for this is because a plane creates a larger carbon Footprint than a boat even though it does take a shorter time to reach its destination, it still creates more pollution. We chose a typical British meal, Sunday Roast, and we all went through where the different kinds of foods came from that made it up.

FOOD LOCAL VS GLOBAL

You can buy foods from abroad and you can buy foods locally. It is a fact that it is more healthy to plant your foods locally or get them from your local shop because it lowers the pollution that is created by transport. The food will be cheaper, better tasting and overall fresher than what we get from abroad. The down side of this is that certain types of foods cannot be grown here for example fruits. Bananas, kiwi and pineapples are not made to be grown in harsh environments meaning we have no choice but to import from Spain and other warm countries. In the best case…if you buy from abroad….remember to buy FAIRTRADE PRODUCTS!!!!!
