Featured Mariposa Mountain Rider(s) of the Month

We will be featuring a Mariposa Mountain Rider(s) each month. If there is someone

special you would like to recognize, please email me: [email protected]

EMMA LOLA

Meet Emma Maire and Lola Beams

Emma and Lola are both junior members of MMR

and both ride with Shawna Dahl. Emma began

riding with Shawna in July of 2016 and recently

competed in the Mariposa Rodeo Royalty contest

with her family’s Quarter Horse, Willow.

Lola began riding with Shawna in January of 2018

and also competed in the Mariposa Rodeo

Royalty contest with her family’s POA, Checkers.

Both girls had an amazing time in the Mariposa

Rodeo Royalty contest. You can read more about

it below!

Mariposa County Fair Rodeo Royalty submitted by Carol Suggs

The contestants had been working

hard from June through

Fair. Participating in a variety of clinics/

workshops and volunteering throughout

the community. Selling raffle and rodeo

tickets as well as advertising in our rodeo

program book.

Their competition day was August 10 and started with horsemanship in the morning, then personal interviews that afternoon, followed by their on-stage performances that evening at the family and sponsor appreciation dinner.

Then they had to wait...3 weeks!

Fair found them assisting staff at Friday family fun night, waving to the crowds during the parade on Saturday,

walking the fair participating in their own social Scavenger Hunt and then came the crowning before the rodeo on

Sunday. As folks were in the stands on September 1st, they were able to see the ladies come into the Gold Bowl

arena while Announcer Ted Dwyer read their biographies and presented the results of this years’ contest. (continued)

Our Royalty Committee is very blessed to have worked

with such wonderful families this program year. The

way through the competition and we look forward to

an amazing program year!

It should be noted that in our brief history of doing this

since 2011 this is the first time that we have had a

double title holder in two divisions. Miss Victoria was

our Princess in program year 2013-2014 and now she

wears the crown as queen!

Thanks to the Mariposa Mountain Riders for always

being a sponsor of this competition. Your support

means a lot to us. The Mariposa Friends of

the Fairgrounds Foundation is dedicated to keeping the

MERCED RIVER TRAIL REPORT By

Wendy Brown

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY On June 26, 2018 the Board of Supervisors authorized the Planning Department to submit an application to the National Parks

Service’s Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program. This application was successful.

On October 23, 2018, the Board of Supervisors received an update from the Planning Director on progress related to the

Merced River Trail, and a resolution was requested. I attended this meeting and gave public input on the importance of

including pack and saddle stock on this “multi-use” trail. I explained that I am familiar with this trail and have often thought that

it would be ideal for a number of recreational opportunities. On July 9, 2019 the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a

resolution establishing the “Merced River Trail Community Working Group” to provide technical expertise and guidance on the

development of the Merced River Trail Master Plan. This committee will consist of nine members from the following groups in

Mariposa County.

• BLM

• Yosemite National Park

• US Forest Service

• Merced Irrigation District

• Upper Merced River Watershed Council

• Sierra Foothill Conservancy

• Creative Placemaking Strategy Advisory Committee

• Historic Sites & Records Preservation Commission

• Representatives of other organizations and the general public, including trail advocates and outdoor recreation enthusiasts.

I attended the MMR’s July meeting, and asked if the Board would write a letter of support for the Merced River Trail and the Community Working Group, and recommend that I serve on this committee, which they agreed to do. I then submitted an application to serve on this committee. On July 13th Mary Darlene Theodore and I attended the Sierra Freepackers meeting and gave a report. They also agreed to write a letter of support.

On August 22nd I received an e-mail from the Mariposa County Planning Dept. that said I had been recommended to serve on

the Merced River Trail Community Working Group. The next step is for the Board of Supervisors to confirm my position on the

Committee. This was done on September 10th. So now it is official, and we will be having our first meeting on October 24th.

Thank you for your support. I look forward to working on this committee to ensure that our public lands remain open to

recreational stock use.
