The Strangest Prayer Lenten Worship Series

    March 1March 29

We pray the prayer together every Sunday.

Many of us know the words by heart. Yet, the

prayer taught to us by Christ is anything but

domesticated or tame. John Dominic Crossan

calls the Lords Prayer the strangest prayer

and names it as a revolutionary and radical set

of words, in Jesus context as well as ours.

This Lenten season, a time set aside for prayer and preparation for the celebra-

tion of Easter, let us re-examine these words and discover together their radical

call upon our hearts and lives:

March 8: Your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven...

March 15: Give us today our daily bread...

March 22: Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us...

March 29: Save us from the time of trial...

Easter: April 5: For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen!

    The Mission Summit is Back!

The American Baptist Churches, USA Mis-

    sion Summit (the conference formerly

known as the Biennial) is returning to

Overland Park this summer (June 26-28).

The Mission Summit is a time of encour-

    agement, celebration, worship, and fellow-

ship, and a wonderful opportunity to expe-

rience the diversity of the American Baptist world beyond our own

walls. We have a special opportunity here in Lawrence to experi-

ence this encounter so close to our own community, and it is not to

    be missed!

Our church is an official sponsor of the Mission Summit, meaning

that members of our congregation do not need to pay the full regis-

tration price to register for the event. In order to register, please go

to www.americanbaptists2015.org. Registration as a full participant

throughout the event will cost $40.00, and will afford the opportuni-

ty to participate in all of the plenary sessions, worship events, and

mission conversations. Meals and some pre or post-events have an

additional charge. More information is available in the church of-

fice. Again, this is a wonderful opportunity to have just outside our

    doorstep! Sign up today!

    A Wonderful Sandpaper Moment!

As our Spiritual Formations Ministry reminded us as a part of our

Five Points series last year, ours is a Church of the Holy Sandpa-

per. Like sandpaper in the hand of a woodworker, it is only by rub-

bing and occasionally scratching do we become re-created and beati-

fied. Likewise, it is not by playing nice and avoiding hard conver-

sations that we experience God re-making us, but in the honest, vul-

nerable, real dialogue of faith and life.

I thought that Dr. Molly Marshalls sermon on Sunday was a won-

derful sandpaper moment! Her words on interfaith conversation

were striking and bold. And they merit further conversation.

Thus, you are invited next Sunday, March 8, to a special adult Sunday

school session to share your responses, questions or thoughts. Per-

haps you were rubbed the wrong way, or

maybe her words scratched an itch that

you have had for a long time. If you would

like to further discuss, please come to the

Judson room at 9:30, Sunday, March 8. Lets

do more than scratch the surface together!

    Easter Flowers

If you would like to purchase a plant to deco-

rate the sanctuary on Easter, please fill out a

form and place in offering plate or contact the

church office no later than March 29. Forms

are also available throughout the building and

    in Sunday School rooms.

KU Ensemble in Concert at First Baptist Church

    March 15 - 3 p.m.

Kiowa Ensemble recently received third prize

in the Enkor Chamber Music Competition and

they have won the state and division levels of

    Music Teachers National Association String

Chamber Competitions. On March 21st, they

will compete at the MTNA National Chamber

Competition. Our own Margaret Lambie is the

flautist! She is an undergraduate of Hastings

College in Nebraska and a flute masters stu-

dent under Sarah Frisof. The group is coached

by Scott McBride Smith and Michael Kirken-

doll. Mickayla Chapman is a junior studying

clarinet with Stephanie Zelnick, Congcong Chai

graduated from Hong Kong Academy for Per-

forming Arts, and is a piano DMA student with

Jack Winerock, and Man Wang received her

degrees from Capital Normal University. She is

a violin DMA student under Veronique

    Mathieu.

    Thanks & appreciation:

Dear FBC Friends, Im planning to move to Watertown,

Minnesota, and want to be sure youre aware. Over the

holidays my family and I decided I should consider relo-

cating to be near my son Stephens family to share life

with my three grandchildren (8, 6, and 2). Ive found a

home in their neighborhood, and will be moving by the

end of March. I truly regret leaving my church fami-

ly. So many of you have made FBC a place of welcome

friendships for me, as we worked and worshiped to-

gether over the past nine years. Some of you wonder

about my decision to leave for a much colder climate,

especially in the winter. As a church you have shown

Gods love to me in so many ways. Im grateful that

well meet again in an even better place. Until then,

grace and peace to each of you. ~John Jones
