In God we live, move, and exist. (Acts 17:28a, CEB)

The SLT has approved a tweak to our

    Sunday School schedule. Beginning

June 7, Sunday School will run from

    10:45-11:45 a.m.

    Some notes on Affordable Housing:

    * In addition to our champions - Mayor Farmer and Vice-

Mayor Soden - we have been told privately by TWO other

city commissioners that they are basically in favor of an af-

fordable housing trustfund. But will not support the creation

of one until they see public support.

*The shortage of affordable housing is clear:

    - The Douglas County Housing Authority has 559 individ-

uals/families on a waiting list for housing assistance and are

not expected to be served for 18 - 24 months.

    - The City of Lawrence asserted in their last report to the

Housing and Urban Development department that they can

only support 15% of the need that exists in Lawrence.

    - 292 families inquired about services provided by Family

Promise last year and they are able to serve 9 families at a

    time.

    - 59 individuals and families sit on the Tenants to Home-

    owners waiting list.

    * There are great answers out there to the shortage we have

in Lawrence - 471 cities have created an affordable housing

trustfund to create and preserve affordable housing in the

    United States

    * This is a great investment - for every dollar set aside for

affordable housing construction cities average $6.50 in

matching private/public support. This is especially true

when you consider that most of Lawrence City investments

work out the other way around: (continued)

    Building Reconstruction Update:

May 18-29: Kitchen epoxy floor installation continues. Thank

you to Jim & Amelia Davidson, Bob & Sandy Heacock, Suzanne

Gilbert, Judith Riley, Jim Lord, Danny

Trent, and Steve Heilman for helping

put the choir room and music library

    back together following new carpet

    installation!

The 9th Street Corridor was developed after a

$500,000 grant was committed and the city is ex-

pected to pay approximately $3 million for that

project. Likewise, 1 million was committed by a

private donor that then leveraged nearly 11.5 mil-

lion in city expenses for Rock Chalk Park (not

    including upkeep/staffing).

    * This is bigger than Justice Matters - Family

Promise, Habitat for Humanity, Tenants to

Homeowners and the Douglas County Housing

Authority have all gotten their Board of Direc-

tors to support the creation of a trustfund. And

they will be the one's collaborating to use the

funds in the best way possible.

    * This is a great time to do this - Family Promise

and others have developed the knowledge and

the volunteer support to provide services to fami-

lies. A trustfund will provide the support needed

to put the roof over their heads and service pro-

viders will sustain the supportive services.

Thank you, The Justice Matters Team

    Dear FBC Family:

I am writing to formally submit my resignation from

the Director of Choirs position at First Baptist Law-

rence, effective Monday, June 1, 2015. I am accepting

three separate new positions beginning this fall. I will

be able to share more details in the coming days, but

am awaiting those in each of my new positions to make

their respective formal announcements of resignation

before sharing much more. I am also planning to ac-

company my wife Amelia during her dissertation re-

search in Prague this summer. I am extremely grateful

for the opportunity to have served FBC these past

three years, and take no pleasure in leaving. However,

the opportunity to lead in university, sacred, and civic

music positions close to family is one that I cannot pass

up. My thoughts and prayers will be with FBC during

this time of transition, and I ask your prayers as Amelia

and I begin this new chapter of our lives. I am confi-

dent that the music at FBC will continue to remain a

vital part of worship, and a point of pride among the

ministries of the church. I will carry nothing but fond

memories of my time at FBC and of Lawrence, and

wish you all nothing but the best for the next 160 years.

    Sincerely,

    James R. Davidson

    Director of Choirs
