First Baptist Book Club

Our March selection is Redemption in Indigo by Karen

Lord. This book is a retelling of a West African folktale.

The meeting will be on Monday, March 14 at 7:00 pm at

Lee and Carolyn Carlsons’s home, 4705 Balmoral. Copies

of the book are available at Amazon, Lawrence Public Li-

brary, and University of Kansas libraries.

Our April selection is Trauma and Grace: Theology in a

Ruptured World by Serena Jones. The book is both a collec-

tion of stories of people who have endured and survived

trauma, and an analysis of how they did it by the grace of

God. Serene Jones will be in Lawrence on April 11 when

we are scheduled to meet for the book discussion. If

enough people enjoyed the book, we may attend her lecture

instead. We will decide at the March meeting.

If you have questions about the FBC Book Club, please

contact Peggy Keefe, [email protected], 842-5770.

Introducing... a New

Childcare Worker!

Hi! My name is Cortney Coke. I was

born and raised in Oregon state. I

moved to Lawrence after high school

in 2007 and attended the University of

Kansas on a full ride Army Reserve

Officer Training Corps (ROTC) schol-

arship. I graduated in 2011 with a

Bachelors degree in Applied Behavior-

al Science with an emphasis in early

childhood research. At that same time,

I received my commission and took my oath as an Army

Officer. After graduation, I attended the Army’s Military

Police (MP) School, and continue to serve in the Kansas

Army National Guard. After MP school, I got a job as a

Police Officer for the University of Kansas, which I have

done for over 3 years now. In college my research was

with children between 12 months to 6 years, including

some with physical or mental disabilities. I worked on

various research projects with children and finding ways

to teach them to new behaviors, and basic/complex fun-

damental skills. I enjoy mentoring and teaching children

and being a part of their development. I look forward to

working with our children at First Baptist and being able

to watch them grow!
