Brent Walker at First
Baptist on June 28
Brent Walker, Execu-
tive Director of the
Baptist Joint Commit-
tee for Religious Liber-
ty, will be our special
guest June 28. Mr.
Walker is both a mem-
ber of the Supreme
Court Bar and an or-
dained minister. He leads the organization as it upholds the historic Baptist principle
of religious liberty, defending the free exercise of religion and protecting against its
establishment by government. He speaks regularly and provides commentary on
church state issues in the national media. Walker was a partner in the law firm of
Carlton Fields in Tampa, Fla., until 1986 when he left to enter Southern Seminary in
Louisville, Ky. He earned a Master of Divinity degree in 1989 and was named the
most outstanding graduate. Walker pastored the Richland Baptist Church in Fal-
mouth, Ky., while in seminary. After teaching 10 years as an adjunct professor of law
at Georgetown University Law Center, Walker has, since 2003, served as an adjunct
professor at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. Walker earned B.A. and
M.A. degrees from the University of Florida and holds a J.D. degree from Stetson
University College of Law. Walker received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree
from the John Leland Center for Theological Studies in 2013. His wife, Nancy, is pas-
tor for congregational care at Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, Va. They
have two children: Ryan is a singer/songwriter, and Layton is a teacher in Falls
Church. Layton and her husband, Lucas, are the parents of Walkers two grandchil-
dren.
Mr. Walker will be preaching in our 9:30 a.m. worship service on June 28,
and leading a combined Sunday school hour, hosted by the Sojourners, at
10:45 a.m.

tension; the stained glass panels will go over them at a later date.
ADULT and YOUTH SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL
The youth and adult Sunday School classes will be meeting together July 12, 19, 26, and August 2 and 9 for a special
study series on spiritual gifts. This series is called "The 3 Colors of Ministry" and was used by the Spiritual Leadership
Team a few years back. This series will allow us to not only identify personal spiritual gifts, but it will guide us as we dis-
cover ways to use our gifts together in serving God. It goes beyond just getting information to finding out how to apply
the gifts God has given us.
This series takes seriously the New Testament concept of the "priesthood of all believers." The belief that God has gifted
each of us for ministry, and not just a select few, is a powerful idea that will be given shape as we study and share togeth-
er. We will meet at 10:45 a.m. in the Roger Williams Room. Our leaders for these weeks will be Nancy and Tim Bonner,
and Revs. Matt Sturtevant and Cheryl Harader.
Annual Birthday Picnic, June 14
Thank you Membership ministry team (and
helpers) for another great summer picnic!
There's a Woman in the Pulpit: Christian Clergywomen Share Their
Hard Days, Holy Moments and the Healing Power of Humor has been
donated to the church library by Rev. Cheryl Harader. Cheryl
and her daughter, Rev. Joanna Harader,
have chapters in this publication. This col-
lection of 68 essays will open up the per-
sonal world of pastors, not only female pas-
tors. Many of the feelings and experiences
are shared by male pastors as well. More
than fifty clergywomen, representing four-
teen denominations, are represented in this
book. It was published in April 2015 by
Skylight Paths Publishing.

Summer is Upon Us
Your Finance Ministry is sending a reminder that all the
expenses of the churchsalaries, utilities, maintenance,
and ministry functions, continue throughout the sum-
mer months. We know that many of our church family
will be enjoying time away from home during this sea-
son.
Our request to you is that you remain faithful with your
very generous weekly and/or monthly support of First
Baptist Church even though you may be absent more
than normal during the summer. The building renova-
tion project is nearing completion and members contin-
ue to participate in all the ways we welcome, worship,
work, and wonder.
We look forward to your safe return.
