Masterpiece Classic: Mr. Selfridge, Season 2airs Sundays, March 30–May 18 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD
A new season of popular drama Call the Midwife begins this month, returning to East London to follow the midwives and nursing nuns of Nonnatus House as they make their rounds. Based on the best-selling memoirs of the late Jennifer
Worth, the series captures a snapshot of British history as it tells colorful stories of midwifery and fam-ilies in London’s East End of the 1950s. Series 3, starring Jessica Raine as Jenny Lee and Miranda Hart as Chummy, begins in 1959 on the eve of the UK’s Swinging Sixties. The winds of change are sweeping through the country and the residents of Nonnatus House face some momentous changes of their own: as the new season opens, the nuns and midwives move into a new premises.
On Masterpiece, Jeremy Piven returns for a new season of the sumptuous drama Mr. Selfridge, starring as the American retail buccaneer who brought seductive shopping to early 20th-century London. Mr. Selfridge, Season 2 continues the drama surrounding Selfridge & Co., the pioneering London department store founded in 1909 by fl amboyant entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge.
The new season opens in the spring of 1914 with the store’s gala fi fth anniversary. Many employees have moved up the promotion ladder, some have moved on, and Harry’s wife, Rose (Frances O’Connor), has moved out — back to America for a time out of pique with Harry over his infi delities. Meanwhile, World War I puts the store, its employees, managers, and the galaxy of characters that revolve around this symbol of progress to the severest test yet.
Funding for Masterpiece is provided by Viking River Cruises and Ralph Lauren Corporation with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

Dr. Wayne Dyer: I Can See Clearly Nowairs Monday, March 3 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD
In the most personal program of his career, motivational speaker Dr. Wayne Dyer presents principles for understanding the true purpose of one’s life via an intimate conversation about what his own personal experiences have taught him: There are no accidents, and all the choices we make and actions we take weave a life tapestry uniquely our own. Exploring forma-tive experiences, challenges, and forks in the road in his own life, Dyer relates fi ve principles that have guided his own choices, comparing the developing understanding of the precepts to climbing the rungs on a ladder. Among his discussions, Dyer shows how love allows us to see our lives more clearly. Easy Yoga: The Secret to Strength and Balance with Peggy Cappy
airs Monday, March 11 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HDOne of the downsides of aging is losing muscle, followed closely by declining strength and balance, and for many the world starts teetering. Muscle loss actually begins when we are in our thirties, and continues at a rate of about three percent per decade without intervention. In her new special, New Hampshire-based yoga expert Peggy Cappy spotlights how the practice of yoga can come to the aid of anyone, regardless of age, who wants to increase strength and mobility and improve balance. Yoga is both a natural weight-bearing exercise that builds strength and a low-impact way to work wonders for balance. Cappy, whose gentle yoga approach has helped many reduce stress and create greater comfort and ease in body, mind and spirit for more than 40 years, also shows how yoga poses can increase range of motion, improve awareness of the body, help prevent bone loss and keep the metabolism running effi ciently.

March 2 at 7 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HDRick Steves’ Europe Marathon airs Wednesday, March 19 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD
The romance of the rails and the joys of European travel are spotlighted in two special March programs. Great Scenic Railway Journeys, hosted by director Robert C. Van Kamp, who created the Emmy Award-winning public television series, explores some of North America’s most his-toric and scenic tourist steam railroads. In the program, Grammy Award-winning musician and storyteller David Holt rides the rails, illuminating the history and sights of remarkable train lines. Also this month, guidebook author and travel expert Rick Steves (right) — America’s most respected authority on European travel — hosts Rick Steves’ Europe Marathon, in which he showcases some of his favorite cities. Steves explores popular sites as well as attractions off the beaten track; dining; accommodations; and much more, illuminating the joys of cultural discovery abroad.
American Masters: Pete Seeger: The Power of Songairs Sunday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD
Biography series American Masters poetically documents the late folk singer and human rights activist’s unique experience and contributions to American music and society. Pete Seeger, who died January 27 at age 94, introduced America to its own folk heritage, deeply believed in the power of song and was convinced that individuals can make a difference. He made a whole generation passionate about playing the gui-tar and picking the banjo and promoted the use of music as a force for social change. Largely misunderstood by his critics, including the U.S. government, for his views on peace, civil rights and ecology, Seeger went from the top of the hit parade to the top of the blacklist — banned from commercial television for more than 17 years. His inspiring story is told by everyone from Bob Dylan to the Dixie Chicks and through a remarkable historical archive — a history that Seeger himself helped create.
Funding for American Masters: Pete Seeger: The Power of Song is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Additional funding is provided by Mrs. Rosalind P. Walter, The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, Jack Rudin, The Marilyn M. Simpson Charitable Lead Trusts, The André and Elizabeth Kertész Foundation, and public television viewers.

MONDAY WEDNESDAYTUESDAY THURSDAYSUNDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY
House of Cards: The Final CutTuesdays at 8 p.m. in March on WETA UK
In the concluding series of the award-winning House of Cards drama trilogy, Ian Richardson again stars as the conniving British Prime Minister Francis Urquhart. In the political thriller, Urquhart is still holding onto power with an iron grip, but he is now 65 and knows his reign can-not last forever. Before he retires, however, he is determined to leave his mark, hoping to broker a historic settlement between Greek and Turkish Cyprus. Meanwhile, Urquhart’s equally ruth-less wife Elizabeth (Diane Fletcher), hatches a graft-laden scheme to provide for the couple in retirement, and Urquhart’s past, which he assumed had been left dead and buried long before, threatens to re-emerge and destroy him. Can Urquhart once again outwit his adversaries, or has he reached the end of an unforgettable career?
Also this month, tune in on Wednesdays for Father Brown 2 (new season!) and crime comedy-drama Death in Paradise 3 (also new!), and on Mondays for crime drama George Gently (Season 2).

Classical W TA 90.9 FMClassical for Washington
By Deborah Lamberton, Senior Producer
A different kind of “Fab Four” arrives from the United Kingdom on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly local concert broadcast Front Row Washington, Monday, March 3 at 9 p.m., courtesy of Dumbarton Concerts. Performing Manuel de Falla’s exciting El amor brujo, arranged by one of their own, the young and vibrant Vida Guitar Quartet also offers English Dances by Sir Malcom Arnold, and Georges Bizet’s ever-popular Carmen Suite. On the March 10 broadcast, we offer an all-Beethoven program featuring the Vancouver-based Borealis String Quartet, in performance at Candlelight Concert Society. And how could we not present the Dublin Guitar Quartet (above) on St. Patrick’s Day? Just don’t expect reels and jigs from this ensemble, which uses eight- and eleven-string guitars to play new music and adapted modern works by Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt, Steve Reich and György Ligeti.
On March 24, we tip our hat to Classical WETA all-vocal classical service VivaLaVoce’s Bach Celebration with a Phillips Collection recital by pianist Olivier Cavé, who begins with a Bach transcription of a Vivaldi concerto, followed by works from two of Bach’s exact contemporaries: the well-known Domenico Scarlatti and the virtually unknown Lodovico Giustini da Pistoia. Muzio Clementi’s Sonata in G minor, Op. 50, No. 3 rounds out the program.
Front Row Washington closes out the month on March 31 with the young husband/wife duo of cellist Anthony Leroy and pianist Sandra Moubarak, about whom Washington Post reviewer Robert Battey wrote: “They exhibited world-class musicianship and original, detailed ideas.” Their all-French recital of works by Debussy, Saint-Saëns and César Franck took place at the National Gallery of Art.

Choral ShowcaseSundays at 9 p.m.
By David Ginder, Morning On-Air Host
This past November marked the 100th anniversary of 20th-century English composer Benjamin Britten’s birth. Many observances were scheduled earlier in the season (includ-ing War Requiem performances by The Wash-ington Chorus and The Baltimore Symphony, and our own fi rst-ever broadcast of the cantata, The Company of Heaven). D.C.-based Cantate Chamber Singers have devoted their entire season to Britten, and their intriguing March performance has inspired a Choral Showcase program: we’ve scheduled Britten’s Curlew River on our March 16 broadcast.
The piece was inspired by a visit the com-poser made to Japan in the mid-’50s, during which Britten and partner (and tenor) Peter Pears attended a performance of the Noh classical Japanese musical drama Sumidagawa (Sumida River). Said Britten in a 1958 radio program, “I shall never forget the impact made on me by Japanese theatre…above all, the Noh plays. I count [them] among the greatest theatrical experiences of my life.”
Sumidagawa became the basis for the fi rst of Britten’s Church Parables, a new genre of small opera based on church-centered stories and designed for performance in church. The libretto for Curlew River was prepared by William Plomer. Our recording is conducted by the com-poser, with Peter Pears and John Shirley-Quirk. The story concerns a noble woman, driven mad by the kidnapping of her young son. Her wander-ings bring her to a shrine of miracles, which she realizes is centered around her son’s grave. A vision of the boy there relieves her madness.

La Mer, Metamorphosen, and More on NSO
Showcase in MarchWednesday, March 5 at 9 p.m.
By Nicole Lacroix, Evening On-Air Host
Take the plunge this month with the Classical WETA 90.9 FM concert broadcast NSO Showcase on the evening of Wednesday, March 5. Debussy’s La Mer is an adventur-ous musical day sail which begins with a glorious sunrise and ends with the crashing waves of a storm-tossed sea. And what could be more refreshing than a visit to four of Rome’s historic fountains in Respighi’s tone poem, Fountains of Rome? This month’s NSO Showcase program features Slovakian conductor Juraj Valcuha leading the National Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Debussy’s La Mer recorded in November 2012, and John Adams as our tour guide for Fountains of Rome, recorded in May 2013.
Pianist and polymath Stephen Hough then joins con-ductor Andrew Litton and the NSO for Rachmaninoff’s boisterous First Piano Concerto — his Opus 1, written when the composer was 17 and revised just before he left his country forever in the buildup to the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. The performance was recorded in April 2012.
War also was very much on Richard Strauss’ mind when he composed Metamorphosen, A Study for 23 Solo Strings, in 1945. This late one-movement elegy is one of Strauss’ most personal and deeply felt works. It was inspired by his grief at the destruction of Munich’s opera house and Bavar-ian National Theater in a 1943 air raid. Strauss makes the piece even more poignant by quoting the funeral march from Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony towards the finale. In complete contrast, we’ll end the March NSO Showcase
Bach Celebration on VivaLaVoceWETA’s classical vocal music service, VivaLaVoce — available at
VivaLaVoce.org — celebrates the birthday month of Johann Sebastian Bach with a return of “CantataFest.” Scheduled for broadcast are all of the more than 200 surviving cantatas by Bach. He composed approximately 23 secular cantatas for civic occasions and more than 300 sacred cantatas (many lost), which he wrote and performed to supplement readings on Sundays and holidays at Lutheran church services in Leipzig. At the center of Classical WETA’s “CantataFest” is the highly acclaimed set of recordings of the sacred cantatas featuring the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists led by John Eliot Gardiner. VivaLaVoce airs approximately seven cantatas each day during March.
broadcast with the Suite from Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, where powdered wigs meet glitzy waltzes in a tribute to the splendor, opulence and charm of Vienna’s golden age. Christoph Eschenbach conducts the National Symphony Orchestra in both Strauss works, recorded, respectively, in February and June 2012.
From the ever-changing seascape of Debussy’s La Mer to Richard Strauss’ effervescent Viennese ballrooms — from the splashing fountains of Rome to the bombed-out Munich opera house, and the virtuoso pianism of Stephen Hough playing Rachmaninoff, this month’s NSO Show-case is a splendid orchestral adventure. All of the music for NSO Showcase was recorded live at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
