Holy Communion is celebrated on the last Sunday of January, April, June and
October at the 11am Service, and informally as announced. To contact the
minister, please ring 554 1842.
The “OPEN DOORWAY” is open each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from
11am - 1.00pm. Pop in or arrange to meet a friend there over a cup of coffee.
Enter by the main door. Our wheelchair entrances are in Pilrig Street.

MARCH 2012 IN PILRIG St PAUL’S
STATED ANNUAL MEETING
The Stated Annual Meeting of the Congregation of Edinburgh: Pilrig St.
Paul's, will be held at the close of the 11 am service on Sunday 25 March,
2012. At this Meeting the Audited Congregational Statement of Accounts
for the year ending 31st December, 2011 will be submitted together with
the Congregational Statistics and Elections to Membership of the Congrega-
tional Board made as appropriate.
The Board very much hope that all members of the congregation will re-
main at the end of the service for this short but important meeting.

Dear Fellow-members,
Lent is the period of six weeks leading up to Easter Sunday. It is the season
in the Christian Calendar when Christians are encouraged to put some more
time and effort into sharpening up the focus of their faith in Jesus Christ.
This can involve reading and discussing together some particular aspect of
what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Lent Study materials are
produced by several groups. One is produced by Churches Together in Brit-
ain & Ireland (CTBI) which this year focuses on “The Way to Freedom”

Another way is offered by Christian Aid who encourage you to “Make Lent
Count”. We all have many blessings and for each day of Lent Christian Aid
encourages you to donate a few pence for a particular blessing you have
enjoyed and also in caring for creation.

Another option is to Take a Step for Fairtrade. Why not try out a new reci-
pe using as many Fairtrade products as you can? Or invite friends over for
Fairtrade tea and cakes? Contact shopkeepers to ask them to stock more
Fairtrade goods. There are lots more ideas on the website www.
fairtrade.org.uk/step .
Jesus gave so much for you! Show your joy in the wonder of His love as you
give some time and effort to let that love touch your living, making a
change, making a sacrifice, however small that shows that you love Jesus!
May God bless you all as you travel through Lent!

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 27TH FEBRUARY – 11TH MARCH 2012
Look out for events and information about Fair Trade during Fairtrade Fort-
night. Take actions and Take a Step for Fairtrade. Buy some Fairtrade prod-
uct you have never tried before. There are lots of them !!
Bananas, coffee – instant and filter, tea - wine, biscuits, sugar, rice,
clothes, skincare products and many more. Just look for the Fairtrade sym-
bol !
Recipe - from Fairtrade Foundation - for Double Chocolate Chocolate
Brownies.
Ingredients
4oz Margarine
1/2 level teaspoon Fairtrade vanilla essence
2oz Fairtrade cocoa
2oz self raising flour
2 free range eggs
2oz Fairtrade chopped nuts (optional)
8oz Fairtrade caster sugar
Chopped plain Fairtrade chocolate for topping.
Method
Melt margarine then add to the rest of the ingredients-mix well.
Pour into a tin lined with greaseproof paper sprinkle chopped nuts or choc-
olate on top
Cook for 30mins at Gas 4
While still warm gently cut into pieces in the tin. Place a cooling tray on
top of the brownie. Turn upside down (carefully!) then remove the tin and
peel back the greaseproof paper. Place a second cooling tray on top of the
upside down brownie and turn the right way up. Allow to cool – if you can
wait!!

MUSIC OUTREACH UPDATES
GREASE IS THE WORD!
Our older singers in Singchronicity are presenting their production of scenes
from the 1950's classic musical, Grease, on Saturday 24th March at 2.30pm and
7.30pm in the hall. The place will be transformed into Rydell High for one night
only! Don't miss your chance to enjoy all the fun and great tunes as well sup-
porting our youth choir in action. Tickets can be booked by contacting Martin
Ritchie and cost £5 each. The proceeds will be used to pay for our freelance
music team, so please do everything that you can to encourage members of the
church, family and friends to come along to one of the shows.
VOCAL VIBES - THE PEACE CHILD
Thanks to everyone who helped out with and came along to the Peace Child
show on Saturday 11th February. It was a great show, full of lively singing and
acting as well as some really touching 'lump in the throat' moments too. It was
great to welcome along family and friends of our young singers as well as mem-
bers of the congregation.
PILRIG CHORUS
Pilrig Chorus are busy rehearsing for their spring concert, which is on Saturday
31st March at 7.30pm in the Sanctuary. Admission is free, with the opportunity
to make donations to the Chorus music fund at the end of the concert.
The programme will include:

Gabriel Fauré Cantique de Jean Racine and Messe Basse
Howard Goodall Love Divine
The music is really beautiful stuff, and the programme includes both established
classics as well as newer material - but everything contains a good tune! The
more observant of you may notice that Howard Goodall also wrote the Setting of
Psalm 23 that is used as the theme tune of The Vicar of Dibley!
So please feel welcome to come along and support us as we make music as well
as build relationships with our local community through this group. Thanks for
your support.

SHALLOWFORD PRESBYTERIAN YOUTH CHOIR
Pilrig St Paul's, North Leith and South Leith will be hosting a visit from the
Shallowford Presbyterian Youth Choir on 14th and 15th June 2012.
We are looking for volunteers to host one or two singers in homes for two
nights as part of our hospitality for the group. Please let me know if you'd
be interested in this. Our experience of this group is that they are charm-
ing and very well behaved teenagers, so we are sure that showing them
hospitality would be a rewarding opportunity to show some Scottish hospi-
tality!
As the focus for their visit to Leith, there will be a concert 'crawl' on the
evening of Friday 15th June around the three participating churches.
Please pop the date in the diary and encourage others to come along to
one or all of the short performances in each church that evening. It should
be fun!

THANKS TO JOHN BROWN AND MARGARET SCOTT
Back when Victoria Manor Nursing Home in Albert Street was opening, wor-
ship services began and have continued till today. Initially taken by Rev
Iain Dunn and subsequently by a rota of ministers these fortnightly services
have all been blessed by having John Brown playing the keyboard for the
hymn singing and Margaret Scott ensuring that all went smoothly and or-
ganising the rota of ministers to lead the worship services. More recently
Margaret also provided and set up the communion elements for communion
services.
On 14th December 2011 John and Margaret officiated at their last service
having served the Church in this way for many years – well over twenty!
Pilrig Dalmeny St Church and Pilrig St Paul’s Church owe them a great debt
of gratitude for all those years of faithful service to the Church served in
the Parish on our behalf.

PILRIG ST PAUL’S CHRISTMAS OFFERINGS
Thanks to all who helped us raise the sum almost £500 through our Christ-
mas Offerings at our Christmas services.
The total has been made up to £500 form Church funds and split between
the Bethany Christian Trust and Triple E
Bethany works in Edinburgh bringing help and support to homeless people
in our city. Triple E is a charity based in County Durham working with
street children in the Phillipines.
Your generosity is making a huge difference to the lives of many people
and we thank you on their behalf!

RICHMOND’S HOPE CHARITY CONCERT

News about Santou Beurklian-Carter
I received this message for Santou last month. Perhaps you remember San-
tou worked with us in Pilrig St Paul’s as a youth worker a few years ago.
Great to hear she is doing well and will be working in the Church of Eng-
land as an ordained curate.
“Just wanted to let you know that my training will finish this June and I will
be ordained (into the Church of England) on Sunday 1 July at Chelmsford
Cathedral in Essex. I will begin my 5 year curacy the day after in a neigh-
bouring town (Seven Kings, Ilford) from where I'm currently living.”
