The Waters of Noah

For this is as the waters of Noah. Isaiah 54:9

You can only make a mistake once. Then it is passed. The time of it is over. If you do the same thing again, it is a new mistake.

Make up your mind that you will stop doing the thing that will cause you to stumble. Repetitive actions can lead to a sure downfall.

Be as the waters of Noah. God only allowed the waters to cover the earth once. Then…no more.

Become resolute in your actions. The days are numbered. Determine to correct yourself daily, moment by moment. Let something only have to happen once before you learn not to do it again.

Don’t allow the same behavior, the same language, the same attitude, the same action, the same mistake to dominate your life. Recognize it. Fix it. And don’t allow it to come back again.

Let a mistake be as the waters of Noah: a one time occurrence – and no more.

Don’t make the same mistake twice.

Roxie Ann Moore left us on February 13, 2012, just one month before her 96th birthday. Roxie was born March 15th 1916 in Neabsco, Prince William County, Virginia. One of the eighteen children born to Lillian “Ada Dell” Owens-Richardson and George Robert Robinson, she was the last surviving child.

Roxie attended the only school (which had only one-room) for Black children near Occoquan, Va., where she completed the eighth grade. She said, “That was the only school they had for us back then.” An old man’s child (she was born 3 weeks before her father’s 82nd birthday), she was an exceptionally talented person and extremely smart. At a young age, her father sent off for a piano for her. She was given a few lessons but mostly taught herself, playing by-ear. After a while, the family moved to Washington, DC, where she stayed until she married Daniel Bond of Windsor, NC in 1934. They set up residence in Baltimore, Md., and in 1937 they were blessed with a daughter, Sheila D. (Bond) Hawthorne. She and Dan separated in 1942, and in March of 1953 she married Roosevelt Moore of Spartanburg, SC, in Washington, DC. They left Baltimore and moved to Philadelphia following Roosevelt’s cousin, Ira Tucker, who was a singer with a little gospel quartet, The Dixie Hummingbirds. This was so that Roosevelt could work promoting the group. In 1954 they were blessed with another daughter, Robin A. (Moore) Cooper Cox, and for a number of years they ran the Peedie Lou Record Shop located on Dauphin St. in N. Philadelphia. However, after 1958, she and Roosevelt separated and things became rather hectic as she moved between Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago, and back to Philadelphia. During that period she started working for the U.S. Postal Service and bought a house on Walnut St. in Phila. After 22 years of being apart she and Roosevelt reunited in 1980. She retired from the Postal Service and they moved back to Baltimore. While in her 80’s, she went to work for the Shaw Bus Co., where she rode school buses as a bus monitor. She and Roosevelt were together until he died in 2001.

From the age of sixteen, Roxie was involved with the Church. She was one of the original workers during the start-up of the Pentecostal Church of God in Christ under Bishop C. H. Mason. She could really sing and play the piano, so she was often asked to work the church circuit, going between Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, the Carolinas, and

Pennsylvania. It didn’t take long before she became a licensed evangelist, and whatever else she may have done in life, this is what she considered her Life’s Calling. Even though, for a short while, she left the church. She and her best friend, Sister Rosetta Tharpe moved to New York City. By this time Rosetta and her guitar were becoming famous. It didn’t take long for Roxie to be noticed. Being surrounded by show business people, she got to know, perform with and/or befriend many such as; Red Foxx, Sarah Vaughn, Diana Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Josephine Baker, “Hot Lips” Paige, Billy Eckstein, Tony Bennett, Duke Ellington, Count Basie; and the list goes on. And then the same with ever so many more in the Gospel world as she found her way back to the church. She knew just about all of the Gospel groups and singers of her day. She first tried her hand at writing gospel music in the late 40’s/early 50’s when Ira told her that The Dixie Hummingbirds were in need of new material and it was suggested that she “try and come up with something.” She had been writing ever since. Some of her songs are: “Jesus He Looked On Me”, “I’ll Keep On Living After I Die”, “Will the Lord Be With Me”, “When I Found Jesus Christ”, “Smooth Sailing”, “It Won’t Be Long”, and “Love Your Fellowman.” In 1989 she received the Philadelphia Music Award from the Philadelphia Music Foundation for “Best Songwriter in Gospel Music”. Lately she has served as an information source for documentaries and books about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Dixie Hummingbirds, other music greats, and on the formation of The Church of God In Christ.

Roxie loved this nation and was very politically active. She had an on-going correspondence with many government officials; beginning with the Eisenhower administration. As a Bible scholar, she knew scripture and had a very developed knowledge of right, wrong, good and bad. She served as a constant reminder of what was right and what was wrong according to God’s word. Not long ago, Sen. Ted Kennedy sent for her to attend a reception held in the Baltimore area. As he walked in the door, he was heard to call out, “Where’s Roxie?” She was very active, in every sense, until the moment the Lord took her home.

Since her father died in 1942 at the age of 108, everyone expected her to go on forever.

Baltimore-born singer-actress, and former Morgan student, Anne Brown, helped shape the iconic opera Porgy and

Bess as we know it; and she is the only “Bess” that Gershwin ever knew.

In the early 1930s, composer, George Gershwin set out to adapt a non-musical play called Porgy into a musical. As originally written, Porgy didn’t have a part that called for a leading lady. In Gershwin’s musical—as in the novel it is based on—the role of Bess was a relatively minor one. “Bess” was simply a “morally-challenged” woman in the fictitious town of Catfish Row . . . one of many poor characters who lived there. However, as Gershwin was casting his opera, the 23-year old, Juilliard student, Anne Brown, who, after auditioning for Gershwin, was hired on the spot.

Anne Wiggins Brown is “Gershwin’s Bess.” Her father was a surgeon and her mother was a music lover who played the piano daily. Ms. Brown showed signs of remarkable musical talent as a very young child. Family legend says that she could sing a perfect scale when she was 9 months old. While she lived a comfortable middle-class existence within the confines of her home, she felt the sting of racial prejudice and Jim Crow as a child and throughout her life and career. She was rejected from a Catholic elementary school because she was African-American.

She went on to graduate from Douglass High School—one of two public high

schools designated for Black students in Baltimore. She then attended (what was then) Morgan College. When she later sought admittance to Peabody Institute, a leading music conservatory, she was rejected—presumably because of her race. At the encouragement of the wife of the Baltimore Sun’s publisher, she applied to Juilliard in New York City and; at age sixteen, she was the first African-American vocalist admitted to Juilliard, where she excelled. She earned her undergraduate degree there and won the Margaret McGill prize as the best singer at Juilliard.

In spite of her credentials, obvious talent and ability, her opportunities and options were severely limited because of racial prejudice and oppression. She had no hope of reaching the top tiers of opera. But it was during her 2nd year of graduate studies at Juilliard that she read that prolific composer, George Gershwin was writing an opera. She wrote to request an interview – and was granted an interview and audition at Gershwin’s New York apartment. Her audition moved him so much that he hugged her and knew that he had his “leading lady.” However, at that point, his opera didn’t have a leading lady part.

As Gershwin composed the opera, he was so taken by her and her voice that he added more material for “Bess” and more music for her to sing. The role of Bess grew from a secondary character to one of the opera’s leads. She became a sort of muse to him— helping his process by singing several other characters’ parts as he wrote them. Gershwin often composed with Ms. Brown at his side. One day during the last days of rehearsal,

Gershwin informed Ms. Brown that “…henceforth and forever after, George Gershwin’s opera will be known as Porgy and Bess.”

...George Gershwin died in 1937 at the age of 38. Anne Brown was Gershwin’s Bess—the only person he ever heard sing the role—and she is an inextricable reason that the iconic Gershwin masterpiece is called Porgy and Bess.

Ms. Brown toured Europe as a concert artist from 1942 to 1948. Brown said that she left the United States because of continued racial prejudice. In a 1998 interview she said, “We tough girls tough it out. I’ve lived a strange kind of life—half black, half white, half isolated, half in the spotlight. Many things that I wanted as a young person for my career were denied to me because of my color”.[1] She also commented on her light complexion, “Though there is no place on earth without prejudice. In fact, a French journalist wrote an article during one of my tours there asking: ‘Why does she say she is colored? She’s as white as any singer. It’s just a trick to get people interested.’ Can you imagine? Of course I was advertised as ‘a Negro soprano.’ What is ‘a Negro soprano’?”[1] Ms. Brown simply felt that she and her singing were better received in Europe because she mainly sang works by European composers, such as Brahms, Schubert, Schumann and Mahler.

Ms. Brown eventually settled in Oslo, Norway and became a Norwegian citizen after marrying skier Thorleif Schjelderup, who was a medalist at the 1948 Winter Olympics. He was her third husband, and this marriage also ended in divorce. They had one child, a daughter, Vaar Inga (born 1951). Her second marriage had been to Dr Jacob Petit. They had one

daughter, Paula (later known as Paula Schjelderup).

Ms. Brown continued working as a concert singer and recitalist into the 1950s and occasionally appeared in a few more operas. However, health problems forced her to end her singing career in 1953. She began a second career as a voice teacher with a few notable students under her tutelage. She also staged several operas on France and Norway. In 1998, Ms. Brown received the George Peabody Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Music in America from the Peabody Institute—which had denied her music education 70 years prior.

In a 1998 interview with the New York Times, she remarked about her place in time—suggesting that she was born “too soon:” “If I had been born even 30 years later, I might have sung at the Metropolitan Opera. I might have marched for civil rights. I would have been there for that. I would certainly not have lived in Norway, and my way of life would have been very different.” Then, with bright eyes, she added, “Of course, I would not have met Mr. Gershwin, and that would have been a shame.”

It is unclear whether or not she maintained her U.S. citizenship; and in 1999, she was made an honorary citizen of Baltimore. Ms. Brown resided in Oslo, Norway until her death in 2009 at the age of 96. Her papers and personal artifacts are housed at the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University in New Orleans.
