Powerful Protein: Written by Kennedy Roehl:
Family consumer science class just finished up protein week with prek-4 classes, where they learned how important it is to eat foods that keep your body strong. We read "The Powerful
Protein Group" where our mascot, super plate puppet, kept all the children entertained. After story time we moved to the kitchen and let their taste buds dive into our numerous samples. Strawberry Popsicles, scrambled eggs, black beans, seasoned chicken, beef and shrimp. Not only did the children try everything, but they also contributed to helping us
make more samples for the classes the following day. They walked out with a fresher view on food.

Scientists at Work!
First Graders love Science. Adam plants his seed and Christalyn waters it. They used CD cases and planted a
lima bean seed to observe and see what happens.
Also, William, in Mrs. Allen's class,
asks himself "What is living
and what is non living?" and studies his
pictures. Keep up your great work!

Safety Awareness
Actions we take to prevent fires and our actions in the event of a fire or other emergency situations
are critical. The operative word is ACTION…don’t wait for others to tell you what to do. Here are
three safety reminders for us all to think about.
- Remove combustible materials
- Maintain safe escape routes
- Timely actions
The recent issue of “School Planning and Management” had two articles that give me pause in
thinking about our responsibility for the safety of our students. We all should take a few moments
to think about our individual roles and actions we would take in the event of various emergencies.
1. Remove combustible materials from our classrooms and work areas. This requires all of us
to look and think about our individual areas (classrooms, janitorial closets, storage closets,
bus garage, maintenance areas, kitchen areas, and offices). For example, only 20% of our
classroom walls can be covered with display materials. Flammable items cannot be stored
inside our buildings (not even overnight). Furniture not designed for classroom use with an
appropriate fire rating should not be in our classrooms. Art and project materials must be
considered from a quantity and fire combustion point of view. Each of us must look at our
work/teaching areas and remove/reduce the combustible fuel.
2. Maintain safe escape routes to ensure our students have a quick and safe exit corridor from
all teaching/work areas. This means that our building hallways must remain clear of
furnishings, material placement that might visually obstruct the exit signs, or any items that
might block or slow egress. We cannot use hallways for storage. We cannot place furniture
in our hallways. We must keep our hallways free of flammable signage or other materials.
Each of us should challenge any activity that might slow our exit routes.
3. Timely Action in any emergency situation is critical. We often practice with the idea that the
central office or principal is the person to initiate the action. In reality, if a fire of any kind is
notice, the fire alarm must be activated immediately. The person noticing the fire might be
the custodian or a student. They need to know that their timely actions may save lives and
minimize the damage. If anyone sees a person with a gun, take action to protect our students
immediately. This involves thinking along with action. Of course notifying other is a key
element, call 911, but don’t wait for permission or for the office.
Think about safety now so you will be prepared for action when needed
