THE BEAT GOES ON! The boys’ varsity basketball team was able to advance to the Regional quarterfinal game by defeating La Villa 49-47. The team was led by Desmond Clark with 20 points and Dylan Moton with 19 points and 20 rebounds! The game was close all the way, but in the end the Eagles were able to play solid defense and score some crucial baskets. This past Wednesday, the team also defeated Sabinal 60-55 in one of the craziest games of the year. After the 1 st quarter, the Eagles were ahead 25-8, but they let the lead dwindle away and eventually gave it away in the 4 th quarter. The lead went back and forth several times, and with 2:00 minutes left the game was tied 50-50. Once again, though, the Eagle defense and rebounding stepped up and the team was able to pull out a hard fought victory. Dylan Moton led all scorers with 26 points and 16 rebounds! Magnificent mass Students in Mrs. Torre’s 3rd grade homeroom practiced with a pan balance and measured

the mass of various objects.  The students compared the mass of 27 large paperclips (equals 27 grams) to other classroom objects such as pencils, crayons, and erasers.  It was a noisy exploration and engagement activity, and because of that, math truly came

alive!!!                 “Thank you” to our guest, Mrs. Cooper, for spending the morning with us!!!

Stacey StuCo Makes It 21 in 2011!

The Stacey High School Student Council’s year began with the creation of the theme “21 in ‘11”, and on February 26, the students were notified that they would be awarded the

following top honors from the Texas Association of Student Councils:

Outstanding Energy and Environment Program – Jennifer Zimmerman, Committee Chairperson Outstanding Pride and Patriotism Program – Danielle Johnson, Committee Chairperson Outstanding Drug, Alcohol, Safety and Health Program – Vanessa Marino and Quincey Gonzalez, Committee Chairpersons Outstanding Community Service Program – Daley Moore, Committee Chairperson Outstanding Student Council Program – Daley Moore, Stacey Stuco President

This year marks the 21st consecutive year that Stacey has taken top honors from the state and has been awarded the Sweepstakes Award. Only 10 schools in

District 15, which is comprised of over 80 1A to 5A schools and stretching from the San Antonio area to Laredo and Del Rio, received the Sweepstakes Award this year. Stacey StuCo is the only council in District 15 to have won this prestigious honor 21 times in a row. Council members will receive recognition in April when they travel to Arlington for the TASC State Convention. Congratulations to the High School Student Council and their sponsors, Mr. Poludniak and Ms. Medellin-

Thank you for making the first week of our “Change for Change” drive a success! As a school, we collected over $358.69! This money will provide 18 people with safe, clean water for 20 years! Please continue to collect change and bring it to your homeroom teachers. Money will be collected

every Wednesday afternoon and totals will be displayed on the pictograph in the elementary hallway.

Next Friday, March 11th, we will also be “Dreaming of Change”. Any student that brings a minimum donation of $1 on that day may come to school in

their pajamas! This will be announced at the next Lift-Off assembly as well. Thank you for working with us to change the world!

Turning your car’s engine off when you wait for more than 30 seconds will reduce

pollution of gas.

Helping the National Marrow Donor Program

The Family and Community Services class helped the National Marrow

Donor Program on Thursday, March 3. Each student put together a packet for registration. The goal of the National Marrow Donor Program is to

identify unrelated donors for patients in need of a blood stem cell transplant but who have no family members who are a suitable tissue

match.

Each of the students labeled the pages in the packets, which allows the registration to move more quickly. Overall, the class completed one-

hundred packets. And they plan to complete two-hundred more next week.

ART FIELD TRIP Students from Stacey Junior High’s 7th grade art class

recently toured the San Antonio Art Museum galleries to study Egyptian history. Students created animals out of clay that was found during the time period. They brought their clay

sculptures back to school to dry, fire and glaze. Most were impressed with their creations and the tour venue.

First graders in Mrs. Allen’s class painted “spinning tops” for their Spanish teacher, Ms. Singleterry. Ms. Singleterry wanted the first graders to help her decorate the tops for the

school’s upcoming Spanish Mercado. More information about the Mercado will be coming soon. The students enjoyed knowing that they were helpers and part of the festivities!

READING CELEBRATION! March 2nd marked NEA's “Read Across America” celebration, and

thousands across the United States did just that: read! The specific date was selected for the literacy event because it represented the 107th birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, America’s famous writer and cartoonist better known as Dr.

Seuss. Our Lackland ISD media center was also part of the

celebration of Dr. Seuss’ books and literacy in general. Librarian Diane Headstrom organized a day-long schedule with six active duty airmen assigned to the 802d Communications

Squadron. These folks generously volunteered for the daunting task: to come read Dr. Seuss books to our Pre-Kindergarten

through 2nd grade classes.

Great pleasure and many laughs resulted from the comical stories and profound lessons that are found in Dr. Seuss’

writings. In particular, we enjoyed Cat in the Hat, The Foot Book, and Hop on Pop -- and the unique style each individual

reader brought to his story. Many thanks to Ms. Headstrom and to each individual who

shared his time with our children!
