SEASON UNDERWRITERSDENNIS & GRACI MCGILLICUDDY FST is important to us because we believe so strongly in the transformative power of the arts. For close to 30 years now, we have been so fortunate to experience first-hand how that transformative power works its magic in the hands of an organization that is not only experienced and dedicated but so highly skilled in their craft. The values of the theater and its leadership, as reflected in its mission, and as manifested in its work, whether it be on the Mainstage, in the Cabaret, in its Education and community Outreach Programs – these are values that we so strongly believe in. As a consequence, it is a privilege for us to be a part of, and supportive of this great theater.

ANNE H.S. NETHERCOTT When asked to define giving, Anne said, “My mother used to say the best way to find you is to lose yourself, by focusing on the needs of others rather than on oneself.” So, giving has always been an important family value, which in childhood

CO-PRODUCERSCOOKIE BOUDREAUX & DENNIS HASSELL Great literature deals with the eternal struggles of right and wrong, good and bad, just and unjust. Other People’s Money, written in the 1980s, is still incredibly timely today. This play lays it all on the line. Another FST gift to us all.

was reinforced by the community experience of surviving The Great Depression. Anne is proud to be a supporter of FST.

ARNOLD SIMONSEN & RONDA MONTMINY Florida Studio Theatre is far ahead of any theatre in Sarasota. We try to see every play as the actors are truly professional. Richard Hopkins deserves much credit for the success of FST.

PLANNED GIVING MAKES A DIFFERENCE

FST FORUMS

Jerry Sterner’s path to playwriting was an unconventional one. Born in 1938, Sterner attended the City College of New York. After graduation, he sold tokens for the NYC Transit Authority during the evenings, and wrote seven plays during this time. When he was unable to get them produced, he went into the real estate business, where he had an incredibly lucrative career. In 1984, however, he stepped down from his role as the president of a real estate company, and returned to playwriting. ‘’I’d rather be Neil Simon than Harry Helmsley any day…’’ he said in 1990 for The New York Times ‘’And dealing with critics, after wrangling with 4,000 tenants, would be a piece of cake.’’

Fortunately for Sterner, taking a second chance proved to be the right choice. His play Be Happy for Me was produced Off-Broadway

in 1986, starring Broadway favorite Priscilla Lopez and ‘70s TV star David Groh. His biggest hit, however, was Other People’s Money, which premiered at the Minetta Lane Theatre in 1989. Sterner’s experience in the business world can be credited for its success, as many felt he truly captured the idiosyncrasies of the business world. The production was embraced by both the theatrical and financial communities, which lead to a national tour, and the 1991 film version which starred Gregory Peck and Danny DeVito. Sterner continued writing after Other People’s Money, but none of his later work ever reached its level of success. Still, his love for the theatre shone through. ‘’Many other playwrights have written better,’’ Sterner wrote, ‘’but no one has enjoyed having written more.’’ Jerry Sterner passed away in 2001, but his work and passion for telling stories continue to inspire today.
