Introduction
World is fast moving but in comparison with it means of transport is low.
Maglev is the best alternative for means of transport. Maglev runs on the principle of magnetic levitation. Maglev is noiseless ,friction less , and require no
maintenance. Electrified transport reduces pollution. The lack of friction allow maglev vehicle to travel at a
speed over 300 miles/hr.
Maglev Train
Working principleThe propulsion of maglev train is explained by the following principles
a)Principle of magnetic levitation (Levitation)
b) Principle of lateral guidance (Guidance) c) Principle of Propulsion(Propulsion)
Levitation
There are two types of levitation used in maglev trains namely
a) Electro Magnetic Suspension (EMS) b) Electro Dynamic Suspension (EDS)
Electro magnetic Suspension
Electro Dynamic Suspension
Guidance When a running Maglev vehicle, that is a superconducting
magnet, displaces laterally, an electric current is induced in the loop, resulting in a repulsive force acting on the levitation coils of the side near the car and an attractive force acting on the levitation coils of the side farther apart from the car.
propulsionA repulsive force and an attractive force induced
between the magnets are used to propel the vehicle (superconducting magnet). .
Advantages 1)They do not have an engine.2)They do not use fossil fuels.3)Fast and Quiet.4)Light weight’5)Environmentally friendly.
Disadvantages1)The initial cost of MAGLEV trains are highly costly
Difference Between Maglev and Conventional Train
Maglev Trains Conventional Trains
No Friction = Less Maintenance
Routine Maintenance Needed
No Engine = No fuel required
Engine requires fossil fuels
Speeds in excess of300 mph
Speeds up to 110 mph
Current Situation1.Commercially viable.
2.It will run for commercial service
3.At present countries like Germany, Japan & China have shown their interest.
4.Since 1990 maglev has gained status of nationally funded project.
Latest Project
INDIAPUNE PANEL –MUMBAI PANELINDIAN ministry is currently in the process reviewing a proposal to start a maglev train system in india .it has also has been estimate the cost to complete this process would over billion core .the company who sent the proposals is a company based in the united kingdom.
Conclusion1)Department of Energy, found that “maglev technology” is
a technically feasible transportation system.2) The train is best levitated in centre position.
