VALLEY BAPTIST TO HOLD FREE INFORMATION
MEETING FOR ‘PATH TO HEALTH’ CAMPAIGN;
TO ASSIST VALLEY RESIDENTS IN ENROLLING FOR HEALTH INSURANCEHARLINGEN– Valley Baptist Medical Center-
Harlingen will hold a free informational meeting in English and Spanish March 15 on “Path to Health,” a community education and outreach initiative to raise awareness and understanding of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) -- and to help Valley resi-dents enroll before the March 31 dead-line.
Residents inter-ested in learning more about options for health insurance and needing help enrolling are invited to come to the free educational presen-tation on Saturday, March 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Valley Baptist-Har-lingen, 2101 Pease Street in Harlingen (on the first floor of the hospital, South Tower entrance, in the Woodward Conference Center).
During the information session, specially-trained bilingual Valley Baptist staff members, along with experienced “navigators” and “certified application counselors” from other community organizations, will be available to answer questions and help residents en-roll for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. In addition, representatives of the “Enroll America” organization will give presentations throughout the day.
With less than a month to go for people to enroll in an insurance plan in the healthcare marketplace for coverage starting in 2014, Valley Baptist is ramping up efforts to educate the uninsured on steps they can take to secure affordable healthcare coverage. “Path to Health” is designed to inform and educate residents on how the changes implemented in the healthcare law will impact them and what they can do to secure healthcare coverage.

Ask Our Dentists
Q: What factors increase your risk for dental decay?
ANSWERED by DR. ADAM LALONDE:Before answering your question, I like to remind all my patients that you don’t have to be a kid to get cavities. In fact, the average adult develops about 1 cavity per year. Factors that increase your risk for dental decay are: 1-Dietary: Better eating habits means better checkups. Avoid frequent snacks & sweetened drinks that expose teeth to dam-aging acids produced by oral
bacteria. Note: sugars & starches are most harmful. Popular choices that contain sugar include: specialty coffees, sodas and juices, & breath mints. Beware of “hidden” sugars and starches found in many “health” items such as Calcium Supplements & Vitamin C Chewables, Antacids, Cough Remedies, Protein Bars/Drinks, Weight Loss Bars/Drinks, & Canned Nutritional Supplements. 2-Tobacco Use: Using tobacco products, espe-cially sweet chewing tobacco, challenges your immune system & increases oral problems. Also, tobacco products can dam-age gums & teeth & lead to gum recession. Another signifi-cant effect of tobacco products is that it may lead to oral can-cer. 3-Dental Factors: Your past or current dental conditions can mean a greater risk for cavities. Here are some examples: Gum Recession, Orthodontic Appliance, Dry Mouth, (Saliva is essential for cleansing the teeth & neutralizing acids produced by oral bacteria) Oral Hygiene, & Acidic Mouth (frequent vom-iting). 4-Medical Factors: Certain medications & conditions can increase your risk of tooth decay. Prescription & over-the-counter meds that lead to dry mouth include those used to treat: High blood pressure, Allergies, Depression/Anxiety, Cancer, & Digestive disorders. Patients of all ages benefit from fluoride treatments. Adults are especially prone to rapidly developing root cavities. Professionally applied fluoride treatments are rec-ommended for both adults & children & can reduce cavities by 30%. Even as an adult, there are some things you never out-grow….like cavities
