PALM SPRINGS. - 15 people were arrestedby police and three were injured during ashootout while two security guards were de-clared deceased at the scene at Palm SpringsMall on Saturday morning. The shootout did not come as a shock.
Four people were killed in August due to taxiviolence. Residents say they are not goingto tolerate the violence that is putting theirlives in danger. The reason for the shootout is alleged to
be a long ongoing issue of taxi rivalry. Thishas killed many over the years and now isgetting out of hand. Two security guards died in a hail of bul-
lets when two hired security guards openedfire on each other and all hell broke loose. The death of the two security guards happe-ned at the taxi rank just outside the mall.Fifteen people were subsequently arrested
and a staggering 100 cartridges were foundat the scene. Police respondents managed tocalm the situation down.Police spokesperson Sergeant Tshifiwa
Mitileni says, “Guards from rival securitycompanies - both employed by a taxi associ-ation - had been trading gunfire. The shooting occurred near the Palm
Springs Shopping Mall.“When we came out of our houses we saw
dead people lying around. We could not un-
derstand what was going on,” says MusaMzima, a community member.Mitileni further says they have made 15
arrests. Of the 15, two were for possessionof unlicensed firearms.Residents now fear for their safety though
Police are fighting by every means to stabili-se the situation. Mitileni added that there
was a meeting though it is unknown whethera resolution was reached.

SHARPEVILLE. - An asthmatic oldwoman, Dimakatso Selelani, was evic-ted from the house she was bought byherchild Tsediso Mtimkulu. The house
is situated in Tshepiso Phase 1. The evictiontook place onWednesdaymorning, residentswere shocked by the old woman’s plight. The owner of the house who asked not tobe identified claims that he summonsedMtimkulu to the issue of the house 9 yearsago.“I have taken them to court several times
arguing that this is my house. I have all thenecessary documents to support my state-ment,” says the owner as he asked everyoneto move out of the yard.Mtimkulu says he bought the house from
Tatolo Radebe 14 years ago. However, whenSedibeng Ster tried to contact Radebe he wasout of reach.Mtimkulu only produced documents of ra-
tes and taxes without the title deed while theevicter says he has the title. The self-proclaimed house owner’s mee-
ting resulted in a verbal war between theevicter and Mtimkulu. While the two locked horns, shouting at
one another, Selelani became overwroughtand had to urgently use her asthmatic spray. She was given food by neighbours since shehad to take her medication.Mtimkulu says the place was an empty
stand and as the years went by houses were
built. “We have been living here for 14 yearsand bought the placewith nine thousand rand(R9 000),” says Mtimkulu. He further produced documents that might
constitute proof that he bought the standfromRadebe. Although his property wasremoved by gathered members of thecommunity.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Themed “10 yearsas a university of technology - lessonslearned” the Vaal University of Technology(VUT) has crafted a new vision to lead byinnovative knowledge and quality technolo-gy. This embraces producing top-drawer, em-ployable graduates to impact and develop so-ciety in Africa and beyond.
“Education is the best shield against dis-crimination, exploitation, oppression, pover-ty and other forms of malady affecting socie-ty,” said Kediemetsi Mokotsi, VUT directorof Marketing and Public Relations.
She was speaking on behalf of vice chan-cellor and principal Professor Irene Moutlanaat the annual Employer Function Awards to12 partners. The function was hosted at theRiverside Sun Hotel on November 28.
“If you cannot reach your destination, donot blame others,” she said.
She said education is a precious gift par-ents can bequeath on their children. Thanksshould go to the support received from thestakeholders and everyone.
Annie Moletsane, director for Work-Inte-grated Learning (WIL) said about 48 studentshave been recruited by the South African Na-tional Defence Force (SANDF). About16 175 students have been placed since 2007-2014. Moletsane said they have indeed culti-vated a new partnership with SANDF andMinistry of Defence promoting the recruit-ment of students for careers within the de-fence force.
At least 441 students were placed on cam-pus to complete their WIL in order to makeit possible for them to graduate. The VUT isproud to work with international and localpartnerships. This year’s two slogans ‘10years sparks off possibilities’ and ‘50 years
of building your world to a better future’ re-flects on the journey that the university hasundertaken over the years from a new to amature University of Technology, and how ithas grown in stature since its inception in1966.
A season’s inspiration was delivered by ex-ecutive keynote speaker Tumi Sibanda, chiefexecutive officer ‘coaching for a dream.’ She
thanked the partners for doing a good job:“The institution is used to help students
package information that will be used. Youhave to determine whether you want to reachtomorrow. The university cannot have stu-dents who do not know their careers. Howev-er, it is the responsibility of stakeholders tohelp build students’ careers. We can help stu-dents fulfil and realise their ability”.
Sibanda said: “We cannot give what wedon’t have. You have to smile first before youcan make others smile. Produce the brightspark that will make an impact in the nation, not just a business of production. Let’s equipstudents to navigate the world with a goodcompass,’ she concludes. Nomsa Andy, acharismatic artist, kept the audiences on theedge of the seats with her music.

It is that time of the year when our focus willbe on township tournaments and local soccerfans will spend their holidays at dusty soccergrounds all over the country. The Absa Premiership will be on break and
the only form of entertainment for soccer fanswill be those township tournaments as is thetradition at this time of year. But thewin-at-all-costs mentality spoils these talk-of-the-towntournaments.
This is because coaches or club owners’promise these youngsters they will be paid ifthey win the tournament. The other sadscenario is that professional soccer playersmake themselves part of this tournament to bethe centre of attention. For the past ten years, we have tried to
address this situation, but it seems as if the pleafalls on deaf ears. The question remains: whydo professional soccer players play in thesetownship tournaments when they have beengiven a break to rest?Sedibeng Ster has seen players lose their
PSL contracts because of these tournamentsand some of these players then live their lives
in regret. It is painful when Shooting From TheHip recalls how some of them used to behousehold names in South African football. In fact, today they are nothing in the eyes
of the very soccer fans who used to cheer themon as they played in those unorganised soccertournaments.Sedibeng Ster always maintains that the
only thing these professional soccer playersshould do is conduct coaching clinics foryoungsters during the tournament. The tournament can use them to promote
football rather than competing with theseyoungsters, who regard them as role models. It doesn’t make sense to Sedibeng Ster that an
amateur competes against a professionalsoccer player forR20 000 prizemoney.Really! As if this is not enough – in most cases,
teams that win these tournaments do notbelong to football structures. No, they are so-called `squads’ or makeshift soccer teamscomprising professional soccer players, andinclude those who retired prematurely fromfootball. This time of year also brings forthonly one desire - the desire to make money. Now you know why our football is in such
a crisis in this region.* Sedibeng Ster staff wish News Editor Le-
rato Serero a speedy recovery as he is current-ly hospitalised.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - It is not true that theEmfuleni Sewer Reticulation System is oneof the pollution threats to the district riversystem. This is allegedly through e-coli and other
pathogens from raw or poorly treated sew-age.The municipality acknowledges that the
ageing infrastructure poses a challenge in re-lation to the reticulation system. EmfulenispokespersonKlaasMofomme said, “It is nottrue that pipe-bursts are not noticed or attend-ed to. The maintenance team ensures thatthere are regular checks on the system toavoid situations where a large amount of
sewage finds its way to the Vaal River,” hesaid. The municipality does have its own main-
tenance staff at theWasteWater CareWorks,(WWCW).All WWCW staff at Leeuwkuil, Rietspruit
and Sebokeng operate around the clock to en-sure that wastewater is treated to acceptablestandards.“Both Leeuwkuil and Rietspruit Works
have an electrician, a fitter, two fitter assist-ants, an electrical foreman and a mechanicalforeman. It is supported by a millwright (anelectrical/mechanical fitter) provided byRand Water Bulk Sanitation Department aspart of our Service Level & Management
Agreement, which was extended in Septem-ber 2009 for 5 years, then extended by oneyear ending June 2015. Sebokeng WWCW’smaintenance team comprises an electrician, two fitters, one fitter assistant, an electricalforeman and a mechanical foreman. RandWater provides 2 millwrights.“For 2013/2014, we achieved effluent
compliance: Leeuwkuil – 97%, Rietspruit –85%, Sebokeng – 97%. The municipality isfaced with some challenges in relation towastewater treatment due to new propertydevelopment in the area. In Rietspruit, an en-vironmental impact assessment has beenconducted to construct a 36-megalitre per-day emergency dam, an additional clarifier,
a chlorine contact tank and a new final efflu-ent discharge point,” Moffomme said. Headded that they await the approval of theMu-nicipal Infrastructure Grant application thatwas submitted for this project.Sebokeng WWCW is in the process of be-
ing upgraded with two additional modules of50 megalitres per day each. The project isfunded by the Department ofWater and Sani-tation and Rand Water.Construction started in 2013 and is expect-
ed to be completed in 2016. The EmfuleniSewer Reticulation System will improve andbe able to handle the strain that the plantsexperience as a result of new property devel-opment and other factors.

surface seal. Traffic lights will be installed at this intersection toimprove safety.
Impact on motorists
Construction work is currently impacting motorists in BunsenStreet where the slip lane is being built.
As soon as work starts in Bergius Road, the double lanes will beconverted to a single lane to grant access to industries in thearea that would be inaccessible if both lanes had to be closed.Traffic marshals will be on site to assist motorists in the area.
In the interest of road safety
“Safety is a priority at Sasol and improving road safety for ourcommunity around our operational facilities, is thus equallyimportant,” says Sasolburg Operations Senior Vice President,Louis Fourie.
However, improving road conditions would be futile if we don’tdrive safely. “Especially during this time of the year when wespend more time on the road than usual, we should makea concerted effort to stick to the basic road safety rules ofkeeping to the speed limit, getting enough rest during a roadtrip, and most importantly, buckling up,” continues Fourie.
“I would like to wish all Metsimaholo residents a deserved restover the December holidays, but above all, a safe time to spendwith our loved-ones,” says Fourie.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Jomo Cosmos, otherwise known as Ezenkosi, is set to returnto Absa Premier Soccer League status. Ezen-kosi is at the summit of the National FirstDivision League’s log standing. This was af-ter they beat Royal Eagles FC in the entertai-ning National First Division League matchplayed at the Isak Steyl’s Stadium over theweekend. The excited Cosmos boss – Jomo Sono -
says Vaal is a happy hunting ground forEzenkosi, taking into consideration that twoseasons ago they played their National FirstDivision League matches here in the Vaal
when they were promoted to top-flight foot-ball.Cosmos is at the summit of the National
First Division log with 26 points from 13 ou-tings. They played 7 draws and lost one ga-me. However, hot on their heels is MilanoUnited FC with 24 points from the samenumber of games as Cosmos.Golden Arrows is third on the log with the
same number of points as second-placed Mi-lano United FC, only separated by goal diffe-rences.Cosmos will travel to Durban to have a da-
te with the fourth-placed Thando Royal FCin the National First Division League fixture
scheduled to take place at the UmhlathuzeSports Complex on Saturday. It seems as if promotion candidates will
be between Jomo Cosmos, Milano UnitedFC, Golden Arrows FC and Thanda Royal,if their current performance is anything to goby. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports after thegame, Cosmos boss and coach Jomo Sonosaid there is still a long way to go before theycan start celebrating. He believes the league is still wide open
and the best his team can do is continue tocollect maximum points, especially whenthey play at home. However, Sono was concerned with the
number of chances they created but failed toconvert into goals. It was the same old storyover the weekend with Cosmos strikers mis-sing golden opportunities with only the goal-keeper to beat.“It is too early to think of winning the lea-
gue because the league is a marathon and theonly favour we could do ourselves is collectas many maximum points as we can, especi-ally in the first round of the league. But I’mvery happywith our performance after a slowstart to the season. We will approach eachand every game as it comes. We are not goingto put ourselves under any pressure becausethe season is still long,” he concluded.
