Lockheed Martin’s Engineers in the Classroom

(EITC) education outreach initiative is designed to

identify, develop and inspire students toward entering

careers that have their foundation in Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

courses. Engineers in the Classroom supports a

wide-range of best-practice programs that contain

STEM content that aligns with local, state or national

standards of learning.

Through EITC’s portfolio of programs, events and

campaigns, Lockheed Martin is reaching students and

educators at various levels of engagement – large

audience awareness, small group participation and

one-on-one interaction.

FIRST ANNUAL MINORITIES IN ENGINEERING DAY – FEBRUARY 23, 2007

Manassas Employees Introduce Local Students to Career Possibilities in Engineering

Manassas employees introduced 53 minority students from five local high schools in Prince William County and Manassas Park to the exciting world of engineering during the first “Minorities in Engineering Day” event on Feb. 23. Students from Gar-Field High School, Osbourn Park High School, Potomac Sr. High School, Stonewall Jackson High School and Manassas Park High School spent the day learning about engineering career opportunities and the qualities important for success in engineering. During the event, the students participated in a hands-on, team-oriented engineering challenge project that involved requirements and constraints, knowledge sharing and understanding differing points of view. In addition, they toured labs, spoke with a panel of engineers and met with representatives from universities and professional organizations who provided information about educational and professional opportunities in engineering.

SEVENTH ANNUAL MINORITIES IN ENGINEERING DAY – MARCH 8, 2013

Manassas Celebrates Minorities in Engineering On March 8, employees supported the seventh annual Minorities in Engineering day in Manassas. Jason Calhoun, Prince William County Public Schools Supervisor of Science and Family Life Education, attended the event along with 58 students and 8 educators from local Prince William County Schools. Keynote speaker Richard Wright, Lockheed Martin Director of Global Engineering & Security Services, welcomed the students to an exciting day of learning and discovery into the world of engineering. The students conducted various activities throughout the day including a hands-on approach to teaching the students about requirements, planning, teamwork, and of course, engineering. Additional activities in support of Minorities in Engineering day included an Employee Career Panel, which gave students the opportunity hear it straight from our engineers and have a chance to ask questions, college fair and lab tour. 16

Women in Engineering Day ◦ The purpose of the event is to encourage young women

to explore the fields of science, mathematics, and

engineering. This one day conference will bring tenth

grade female students from Northern Virginia schools

to the Lockheed Martin Manassas site for an exciting,

hands-on exploration of science, engineering, and

technology applications. Through dynamic and interactive

sessions, this day is designed to encourage young women

to investigate the world of engineering and the career

opportunities that are available to them.

FIRST ANNUAL WOMEN IN ENGINEERING DAY – NOVEMBER 12, 2004

Lockheed Martin Manassas employees

introduced 39 female high school

students from 13 local high schools in

Prince William County to the exciting world

of engineering during the first “Women in

Engineering Day” event on November 12.

During the event, the students participated in

a hands-on, team-oriented engineering

challenge project that entitled “Tower

Building” to meet different engineering

objectives. The students also participated in

an “Career Fair” with engineering

demonstrations.

Other Lockheed Martin sites also celebrated

their first annual Women in Engineering Day:

- Akron, OH

- Baltimore, MD

- Eagan, MN

Disciplines Aeronautical Engineering

Aeronautical engineers are the intellectual descendents of the Wright Brothers, who made aviation history in 1903 with the first powered airplane flight. Today, aeronautical engineers design and develop some of the most exciting machines imaginable.

◦ Education: Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering or a related field

◦ Projects: Design, develop and deploy faster and more agile aircraft.

Electrical Engineering There is very little that touches us in our daily lives that an electrical engineer did not have something to do with-from the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical power, to computer hardware and consumer electronics.

◦ Education: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field

◦ Projects: Small subsystem circuits, be part of a global team on a complex systems build, or research new technologies for future integration.

Disciplines Mechanical Engineering

If it's a machine-anything from the engine in a supersonic jet fighter to the toaster in your kitchen-a mechanical engineer was involved. In addition, almost anything that is mass-produced-from your pencil to your favorite candy bar-is made by machines that were designed by mechanical engineers. ◦ Education: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related

field

◦ Projects: Test battlefield surveillance equipment that needs to stand up to severe environmental stress, develop radar systems to protect borders, ports and ships at sea.

Lockheed Martin Engineering

Disciplines Software Engineering

Software engineers deal with all aspects of computer systems. They

design them, build them and operate them. They also develop the

software systems that operate computers.

◦ Education: Bachelor's degree in software or electrical engineering or a related field

◦ Projects: Define and develop. Code and test. Integrate and sustain

Systems Engineering

Systems engineers look at the big picture. They're the people who have

to think about how all the components of a project will work together

as a system. They work in teams with engineers from all the different

disciplines involved in a project and deal with cost, scheduling, design,

function, and even a project's social impact.

◦ Education: Bachelor's degree in systems engineering or a related field

◦ Projects: Create technology that guards borders, integrates threat information, protects critical

infrastructures, provides surveillance, monitors the climate and analyzes complex data
