Details To Be Announced.

Breakdown for the Puzzle on Pg. 10 Doughnut The area of a circle is π x Radius2. The larger circle has diameter = 4, therefore the radius is 2, and the area is π x 22 = 4π. The smaller circle has diameter = 2, therefore the radius is 1, and the area is π x 12 = π. Therefore the shaded area is 4π - π = 3π ≈ 9.42. Circle The area of a circle is π x Radius2. The circle with diameter 3.1 has a radius of 1.55 and an area of π x 1.552 = 7.55. The circle with diameter 3.5 has a radius of 1.75 and an area of π x 1.752 = 9.62 (** closest match). The circle with diameter 3.9 has a radius of 1.95 and an area of π x 1.952 = 11.95. Square The area of a square is Side x Side. The square with side 3.1 has an area of 3.1 x 3.1 = 9.61 (** closest match). The square with side 3.5 has an area of 3.5 x 3.5 = 12.25. The square with side 3.9 has an area of 3.9 x 3.9 = 15.21. Triangle The area of a triangle is ½ x Base x Height. Using Pythagoras' theorem it can be shown that the area of an equilateral triangle is Sqrt(3) x Base2 ÷ 4. The triangle with side 3.9 has an area of Sqrt(3) x 3.9 x 3.9 ÷ 4 = 6.59. The triangle with side 4.3 has an area of Sqrt(3) x 4.3 x 4.3 ÷ 4 = 8.01. The triangle with side 4.7 has an area of Sqrt(3) x 4.7 x 4.7 ÷ 4 = 9.57 (*closest match).

Stories from Silex Ashley’s Article

RIDDLE

The more you take away from me, the bigger I get.

What am I?

WINFIELD VOLUNTEERS

April showers bring May flowers, and that is no lie! My gardens are looking beautiful! And the hummingbirds seem to be enjoying the flowers as much as I do. I still am in denial that we are already in May. They say time flies when you’re having fun!!

Mother’s day is on Sunday May 8th. I’d like to wish all of you moms a very happy day! Memorial Day is on Monday May 30th. All of our centers will be closed on this day, to honor those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. This day is most often used for a little relaxing, spending time with family and friends, dusting off the grill and pulling the cover from the pool. While you are enjoying your family and BBQ, please don’t forget those men and women who died serving our country, protecting the freedoms we have today.

Until next month, Ashley

Winfield Activities

FINISHING IS WINNING BY BOBBIE JO REID

Richard Stewart started running in 1973 after he completed basic training in

the Canadian Army. Today, the 61-year-old has completed 112 marathons. He ran

his first in 1988, at age 35. Twenty years later, he had 50 under his shoes. It took

only four more years to reach 100.

A glance at this year’s race schedule gives insight into how he attained this im-

pressive tally. Richard has already run two marathons in Red Deer, Alberta and Ya-

kima, Washington. He plans to run the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon on

Thanksgiving, and chase it down with another in Seattle the following month.

Richard is a rare breed. Less than one-tenth of one per cent of the world's

population has completed a single marathon. Even fewer have challenged a double

(two marathons in two days), a triple (three in three days), or a quadzilla (four in four

days). He's done them all ... more than once.

That adds up to a lot of mileage. Richard estimates he’s run in excess of

84,000 kilometers; enough to circle the globe at the equator – twice! Forrest Gump

wouldn’t even be in the running.

Angel’s Angle Riddle Answer : A hole (or a debt) TROY

May and World War II: Here are some significant events that took place during WWII in the month of May.

May 28, 1940: Belgium surrendered to Germany.

May 27, 1941: The Bismarck, a German battleship, was sunk by British warships on her maiden voyage.

May 4, 1942: The US Navy repelled the Japanese at the Battle of the Coral Sea. This helped save

Australia and blocked the Japanese in the Pacific.

May 6, 1942: The remaining US troops on Corregidor in the Philippines surrendered to the Japanese.

May 11, 1943: The Trident Conference began. Roosevelt and Churchill delayed the invasion of France

and planned the invasion of Italy.

May 12, 1943: Axis forces in North Africa surrendered.

May 2, 1945: Soviet troops completed the capture of Berlin. The German troops in Italy surrendered.

May 7, 1945: Germany surrendered unconditionally.

May 8, 1945: V-E (Victory in Europe) Day was declared.

May 9, 1945: Soviet troops occupied Prague and the Allies liberate the Channel Islands.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the Japanese attacked the US Navy based at Pearl Harbor, Bob Feller, already one of Major

League Baseball’s top pitchers, volunteered for the US Navy. He was one of many professional baseball

players to enter the service during the war. The list included Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Yogi

Berra, Monte Irvin and many more. Feller was a gun captain aboard the US Alabama and was decorated

with five campaign ribbons and eight battle stars.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each year in the U.S. there are about 1 million cases of shingles. Shingles is caused by the same

virus as chickenpox, and causes lesions that cause mild to severe burning, pain and itching. Adults are

recommended to get shingles vaccinations because that dormant virus from childhood chickenpox remains

in the body and can flare into shingles at unpredictable times.
