WFU 4 CMYKBest of times for Lincoln on best-of lists

By Nancy Hicks, Lincoln Journal Star (reprinted from Jan.21, 2013 edition)

Lincoln is a prince in the world of ranking lists.

We were the best city to nd a job in 2012, said those who judge such things.

The sixth best beer city.

One of the top cities for college grads.

One of the safest places to live.

One of the top 10 mid-sized communities in the nation.

And the second happiest city in the country, at least in 2011.

Over the past few years, Lincoln has built quite a list of all the lists it’s been on -- at least 55 lists, based on compilations by the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and city staff.

We are one of the best places to launch a second career, to retire, to drive a car, to raise a family. We are physically t. We have a great housing market. And we live in the ninth friendliest state in the nation.

The most recent ranking is Lincoln’s jump to fourth place -- from fth in 2012 -- among ”Best Run Cities in America” by 24/7WallSt.com.

Mayor Chris Beutler and Chamber ofcials are pleased as punch with all this attention.

Lincoln has made so many lists that “frankly we were overwhelmed,” said Wendy Birdsall, president of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.

But “it is a great problem to have,” she said.

Often the rankings reect the “great success” the city has enjoyed in the last few years, Beutler said.

“New businesses are opening; our downtown is thriving. And all this is occurring before the Pinnacle Bank Arena is nished,” he said.

Seemingly every day, there is a new list out there, the majority of them surfacing on the Web.

The listing bonanza began in earnest about three years ago, driven in part by the ease of access to data through the Internet, by the money that can be made from advertisers who pay based on the number of hits on an online story, and by human ego that makes ranking stories fun reading.

The proliferation of ratings “is most denitely a result of publishers’ mad scramble for pageviews and ad dollars,” says Bart Johnston, interactive director with Archrival, a Lincoln-based advertising agency.

“Publishers and writers are under constant pressure to ‘optimize’ their stories and especially their headlines to attract people to click,” he said in an email.

The ranking lists are “the ‘low-hanging fruit’ for writers that are looking for a successful story — they’re generally easy to write and, for some reason, we as readers are compelled to read them,” he said.

The most recent list of “best run” cities is offered by 24/7WallSt.com, which on its website promises advertisers that it publishes more than 50 articles per day and its stories get republished on high prole websites like the Hufngton Post, AOL’s Daily Finance and Comcast.

“We, as news consumers, like these lists, particularly when our fair city shows up on the top,” said Matt Waite, UNL journalism professor.

Ratings stories are well read because people “often identify with stuff outside ourselves to gure out our own identity,” said Peter Allman, a Lincoln counselor who has written a book about the ego.

“So Nebraskans identify with the Cornhuskers, and if the football team goes well, we feel better about ourselves,” he said. “If Lincoln ranks high, I feel better about myself.”

And there’s lots of data out there to use in creating ratings and lists.

“This is the information age,” said Eric Thompson, director of the Bureau of Business Research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Government data now is easily accessible online. It is easier to collect, summarize and report, which has made it easier to do rankings, he said.

And it’s the city’s good attributes that have boosted Lincoln’s rankings, he said. The ratings reect that we have a strong labor market here, we have a community with a lot of educated people and a high quality of life.

“If a convenient, livable city with fun things to do, and with good schools is a top priority on a list, we look pretty good,” he said.

If great weather is a priority, we are less likely to be on top.

The recent best- and worst-run cities list is based on several pieces of government data where Lincoln excels: a low unemployment rate (we’re often lowest in the nation), a low crime rate and city government’s top-notch credit rating.

There could be other ways to look at well-run cities, said Gregory Minchak, a spokesman for the National League of Cities, which provides no rankings.

Sometimes rankings are tied to a special interest, like sustainability, walkability or transportation.

Rankings often look at issues beyond typical government data, like daily commute times, engagement opportunities (the number of people who volunteer or participate in government committees), new starts on main street, he said.

Some of the lists are so poorly done, they don’t amount to much, said Mark Funkhouser, director of Governing Institute, which looks at state and local government performance.

Funkhouser is working on a methodology to grade governments, based on traditional public data and on community attitude surveys.

That’s more expensive than putting government data on a spreadsheet. He’s looking for the money to do the sophisticated surveys.

One way to determine whether a list is based on credible research or is simply a story intended to drive trafc to a website is to look at the methodology, Waite said. The more credible the survey or study, the more they will post online about how the study was put together, said the UNL professor.

The lists do make a difference, Birdsall said.

For years, Nebraska has been a y-over state, she said. The new lists are an “incredible way to get a third-party validation,” she said.

Site selectors for businesses do their own analysis, but Lincoln’s prominence on multiple lists puts the city on their radar screen.

And some are from credible institutions. A year ago the Tax Institute listed Nebraska as the No. 1 state in overall tax climate for new business and research and development, she noted.

“That is huge. That is credible. That says you need to look here,” she said.

Beutler acknowledges that the city is perhaps prouder to be on lists compiled by Forbes or U.S. New and World Report, companies that have instant credibility.

But he believes the overall picture portrayed by the many ranking lists is fair: “We are a desirable place to do business and to live.”

Best business investment for 2014: Fueling employee engagement (BPT) - Do your employees feel personally connected to the organization they work for? Would they recommend your workplace to others? If the answer to any of those questions is “no,” you’re far from alone. Employee engagement is way down, so low that a recent study found that two-thirds of the U.S. workforce is not fully engaged.

What exactly is employee engagement? Boiled down, the term means employees who are fully involved and enthusiastic about their jobs. Beyond simply being satised, engaged employees feel connected and committed to their coworkers and the organization where they work. Employee engagement isn’t only good for the individual worker, but has numerous benets for the organization as well.

“Engagement is directly tied to productivity and loyalty,” says David Fagiano, chief operating ofcer, Dale Carnegie Training. “This coincides with ROI, which is the reason why every business should pay close attention to their employees and their well-being.”

Only 29 percent of U.S. employees are fully engaged, according to a study from Dale Carnegie Training and MSW Research. Furthermore, 26 percent are considered disengaged. Disengaged employees are two and a half times more likely to leave their job for any level of pay increase than engaged employees. The study also found that young employees and older groups are more engaged than middle-aged people, with engagement peaking among employees who have been at their place of employment for three to ve years.

“Empowering people to make decisions about their work will generate enthusiasm and inspire people to try harder, producing the strongest lift to engagement,” says Fagiano. “The single most important person for driving employee engagement is their direct supervisor. This person truly sets the stage for positive or negative outcomes.”

Managers should be aware of the three organizational drivers of employee engagement, according to Fagiano:

1. Relationship with immediate supervisor - Does this person appreciate and recognize the employee?

2. Belief in senior leadership - Do employees believe the company is headed in the right direction?

3. Pride in working for the company - Do employees feel a sense of worth when doing their jobs?

“Really good supervisors know that people are driven by their emotions,” says Fagiano. “If they feel engaged, they’ll work harder and be more likely to help their coworkers. The power of positive emotions should never be underestimated.”

The common connection between all engaged employees is that they feel valued. A recent Dale Carnegie white paper, titled “Emotional Drivers of Employee Engagement,” explores emotions that are connected to feeling valued. Here are the four core emotions of feeling valued and how supervisors can use them to build more engaged employees:

Condent: When employees feel condent, they are more productive and more likely to take on new challenges. Build condence by giving sincere praise. Be specic about what you think they have done well in the past and reinforce it with a positive statement or suggestion about the future.

Empowered: When employees have the tools and support they need, they feel empowered. Keep an open door policy for questions and conversation. Truly listen to what employees say. Ask them what projects they’d like to work on. Show them you genuinely care and have high expectations.

Enthusiastic: Enthusiasm is contagious. One employee who feels these emotions can spread positive energy to the entire group. Boost enthusiasm by sharing company plans for the future and be open to employee suggestions. Live by example and talk about how excited you are for future developments.

Inspired: Knowing the future is bright and there is opportunity for career growth will inspire employees. Be a mentor and a coach as well as a boss. Provide growth and development opportunities. Remove obstacles and be proactive about providing any necessary resources. Keep an open dialogue about an employee’s vision for their job in the future.

Employee engagement is a trending topic that is sure to peak in 2014. To learn more visit www.dalecarnegie.com.
