Stained Glass 101with Irene SemeniukApplication for this exciting two-part class is on the copperfoil (Tiffany) technique of stained glass art construction. Insession one, Irene will teach you how to score, break, grind,foil, solder, clean, patina and polish stained glass pieces. Youwill also practice cutting and soldering techniques that arekey to producing salient, quality results. You will leave sessionone with a small hanging abstract panel that you fashioned inclass. Chef Gael Smejkla graduated in 2012 with an Associates of AppliedScience from the Cochise College Culinary Program where she wasawarded three certificates, Chef Garde Manager Apprentice, Sous ChefApprentice, and the Chef Patisserie Baker’s Apprentice.
Chef Gael completed her culinary internship at Walt Disney World inFlorida. There she cooked at Epcot Center’s Restraints, Rose and Crownin Great Brittan, and Le Cellier, the Canadian Steak house. She also par-ticipated in the food and wine festival, working in food kiosks fromGreece, Turkey, Puerto Rico, and others. While at Walt Disney World,Chef Gael was crowned Cookie Queen by the Head Chef for Epcot Center after he tasted her Triple Chocolate Chip Cinnamon cookie.
Baking is Chef Gael’s passion, but she enjoys all areas of cooking, favoring cuisines from Italy, Asia and the Middle East. Baking is a therapeutic meditation for chef. She hones recipes she has loved allher life, making them her own, as well as exploring new baking endeavors.
Chef Gael is a new cooking instructor at the Center for Lifelong Learning and will be teaching Tantalizing Tarts, Sensational Soups,and Breads Around the World: Europe, three new classes in the fall lineup.
Irene Semeniuk became a self-taught stained glass artistbecause she immediately fell in love with the craft while on a vacation break in 1986.
Until the mid 1990s Irene actively designed custom-commissionedlarge and small stained glass artwork, performed repairs, and partici-pated in a variety of local craft fairs in the Phoenix area.
In 2016, Irene retired from a long-term position at Cochise College. This has allowed her to return to her passion for stainedglass on a full time basis. She has set up a small studio in her homein Sierra Vista. She gives private lessons and works on growing hersmall and flourishing business, Stained Glass Creations.
Irene taught a stained glass class in the summer of 2018 at the Center for Lifelong Learning. She is excited to add another class thisfall and have the opportunity to share her experience andinspire others to learn and master stained glass art. Her intent is tokeep the classes small. This allows more personalized instruction toencourage students to continue with the design and ingenuityinitialized in the classroom.

John Barthelme has amassed almost 40 years of conducting archaeological research in Eastern Africa including seven years withRichard Leakey's interdisciplinary scientific team at Lake Turkana,Kenya. He conducted fieldwork with pre-human archaeologicalsites 1.5 – 2.5 million years old, and with early modern human sitesin Kenya and Tanzania approximately 200,000 – 100,000 years old,the age equivalent to Neanderthal sites in Eurasia. Other fieldworkhas been with early fishing and pastoralist sites in East Africa between 10,000 and 4,000 years ago.
John taught in the Anthropology Department at St. Lawrence University in upstate New York for 30 years. He directed St.Lawrence's Kenya Semester Program for a number of semesters aswell as taught high school in Kenya for two years. John has pub-lished one book and numerous scientific papers.
John will be teaching The Neanderthals: Past and Present this falland presenting a lunch lecture on his Saharan Adventure.
Mike Anderson has been interested in history for as long as he can remember. A resident of Arizona since 1961, he taught Arizona his-tory, world geography and world history as a high school social studies teacher.
The author of Warren Ballpark, Mike is also a catcher for the BisbeeBlack Sox Vintage Baseball Club. His articles on southern Arizona pioneer peace officers have been published in the Journal of Arizona History, and he has had numerous articles appearing in the Journal of Cochise County History. Mike has also worked as anewspaper reporter and managing editor.
Mike is an avid collector of music, focusing on blues, jazz, swing and big band. In 2017, Mike participated in the centennial com-memoration of the Bisbee Deportation. Along with two friends, heproduces The Farm and Ranch Report, a half-hour radio comedyprogram that airs each week on KBRP-LP, Bisbee’s community FMradio station.
He lives in the Warren neighborhood of Bisbee with his wife, Judy.
