As the LJCC prepares for its third month of the new Religious School program, we must admit that it’s probably

me for a renaming. It’s not religious school – not in the way most of us grew up thinking about it. The bulk of the

learning isn’t, a7er all, in the school, but a7er “religious school” session ends, at the dining room tables, in the kitch-

ens, and cars of our community’s Jewish families. The goal is not to have a child leave that Saturday morning with new

knowledge, then, but rather to have a prop or discussion piece to carry with them the rest of the month.

Consider the “teeny ny torahs” made in October. These cute li@le projects were at first considered by some

to be just that – a fluffy acvity around a Jewish theme intended to fill the me. But children were encouraged to

select a prayer that spoke to them deeply about their own faith and to use it throughout the month as a touchstone.

We discussed how they might be read on Shabbat evenings as candles were lit, or as a way to feel grounded during

the stresses of the school day. Then, a week later, one child’s family posted to social media how he used his torah to

explain his Judaism to classmates. This boy had chosen the Sh’ma to go in his torah scroll, and his teacher read the

prayer aloud to the class.

If we seek to impart all Jewish knowledge to our children in one hour a month, we’ll fail—and abysmally. Let

us instead see this monthly Family Shabbat as an opportunity to return to community and insll a love of our faith and

tradions. Let us share with children the tools to pracce Judaism and with parents, the language to imbue life with a

sense of Jewish wonder.

The Family Shabbat Experience is open to everyone and the support of all generaons is needed to create a

lasng love of Judaism. Please feel free to join the celebraon on the second Saturday morning of every month.

together.

Part 1 Part 1 Part 1 Part 1 Jonathan ParetskyJonathan ParetskyJonathan ParetskyJonathan Paretsky

As I write this month's column, my birthday is fast approaching. I was born on October 27, which makes me

a Scorpio. And that awareness got me thinking about astrology and signs from the heavens.

Our ancient ancestors lived in a world at best dimly lit at night, with no electric or gas lights. One can try to

imagine how bright the heavenly bodies must have shone in the dry night air! There was great mystery as to

what those overhead lights, seemingly arranged in designs, could be, and why certain designs appeared at

certain mes of the year. Equally mysterious were the wandering stars—the planets—and the bright sun of

the day and the luminous moon of the night. All of those wanderers traveled within the confines of twelve

specific pictures, or constellaons, seen in the arrangement of the "fixed" stars. Surely the moons of all

these things had significance for us.

We are accustomed to saying mazl tov as a message of congratulaons. The word mazl, which is derived

from Hebrew and has come to mean "luck," originally referred to the stars and constellaons, and the signs

of the Zodiac are mazoles. As language evolved, the word came to refer to a fiLng or a suitable me be-

cause the constellaons are in certain posions on certain days and at certain mes. Mazl tov thus meant

"a good star" or an "auspicious omen." We recall Shakespeare's Parolles, who was "born under a charitable

star." Over me, "a good star" evolved to mean "good luck" and then a congratulatory recognion of some

happy event. The Germanic word shtern is less ambiguous: it means a star, with less of the metaphorical

meaning that mazl has.

Jewish tradion, much like genle tradion, a@ached great significance to astrology. For example, in the

Talmud, Rav Papa said, "A Jew should avoid ligaon with genles in the month of Av, because his mazl is

bad; he should move the court case to Adar, when his mazl is good." (I wonder why we weren’t taught this

in law school. Professor Go@lieb? Professor Shapiro? Professor Levy? Professor Lovitch?)

In this month's column we look at the sun and the moon, which appear to

move through the "houses" of the Zodiac.

Di zun is the sun. Di zun shaynt glaykh, oyf orem un raykh. The sun shines

the same on both the poor and the rich. Di eygene zun makht layvnt vays,

un dem tsigayner shwarts. The same sun makes lined white and a gypsy

black.

Di levone is the moon. Men muz di levone mekhadesh zayn, azoy lang zi sht-

eyt. One should bless the new moon as long as possible. What is meant is

that one should take advantage of an opportunity when it arises.

Next month we will address what to call the sun signs if we translate their

names from Hebrew or Lan into Yiddish. In the meanme...
